Barcelona president set for showdown talks with Wenger over Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas

Barcelona President Sandro Rosell arrived yesterday in South Africa with the intention of holding face-to-face talks with Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger over Cesc Fabregas

According to Barcelona sources, the two will meet today, on the eve of the World Cup final.
Rosell aims to try and persuade Wenger that to let his captain go, and according to El Mundo Deportivo, he will tell the Arsenal coach that the club is wiling to pay 45 million euros for Fabregas’ signature.

The paper says the Barcelona president wants the meeting to be as discreet as possible so as not to unsettle Fabregas before the World Cup final

Earlier this week, Rosell said he wanted to wrap up the deal for the Arsenal captain as quickly as possible.

"It's now or never," Rosell told the Spanish Sport newspaper ahead of his trip to South Africa. "We'll do it fast, it cannot be drawn out any longer. I'll try to meet with [Arsenal Manager Arsene] Wenger, and we'll see what happens."

That'd be tragic.

In all seriousness though I don't really see how Fabergas fits at Barcelona. Xavi and Inestia make him rather redundant as I can't imagine you'd play all three together. Unless they doubt Inestias fitness over a whole season.

I believe the plan is to move Iniesta to the left wing, with Xavi and Cesc in the centre.

I agree. Since they are playing with three midfielders there's not much room for Fabregas. Xavi and Iniesta are first choices and the last place will probably go to Busquets or some other defensive midfielder.
Sure, they can use Iniesta as a winger up front, but with Ibrahimovic, Bojan, Pedro, Messi and Villa I just can't see how that will work. Messi and Villa are first choices and I doubt they'd prefer to put a midfielder up there with them instead of Pedro. Even Bojan and possibly Ibrahimovic should be chosen ahead of Iniesta.

Buying Fabregas would be a waste of money in my oppinion.

if Barcelona want to waste their money, and if they can leave Arsenal weaker in the process, that's absolutely fine by me!

I think that is exactly the plan which is one of the reasons they have no interest in keeping Henry

Really think their plan is to play Villa out wide if they dont manage to sell Ibra somehow, which I doubt.

Don't really know what they are thinking atm, i expect them to play something like this atleast.

--------Busquets-------
----Xavi---------Iniesta-

Messi--------------Villa---
------------Ibra------------

That's if they fail to sell Ibra, but if they do sell him, they'll use that money to help fund a move for Fabregas and look more like...

Valdez

Alves Pique Puyol Abidal

Busquets

Xavi Fabregas

Messi-------------------------------Iniesta
Villa

Their transfer policy is pretty bizarre at times, like when they bought Henry when they had absolutely no shortage of attacking talent. When they want a player they seem to be so single minded about getting him it doesnt really matter where they fit.

In Fabregas, though, I think they see a player who slipped through their fingers, and Xavi's long term replacement.

Hmmmmm

Reina was doing mini-speeches about each player, Smithy quotes what he said about Cesc a few posts up. Then a couple of the Spain players put a Barça shirt on Cesc and he gets emotional, pulls away from the group with the mic and goes back to the main group and takes off the shirt.

And this is what Reina said about him on stage:

Barça's future, Spain's future, Cesc Fabregas

Oops, forgot about this thread. Here is the video:

I almost feel bad for Fabregas. He is sort of wearing an embarrassed "cmon, f**k off" look on his face, like he doesnt wanna be a jerk for ruining the joke, but he doesnt feel right doing that.

I thought it was strange that Reina of all people saying doing that. I would bet Puyol and Pique put him up to it, just so it wasnt a Barca player saying it directly. Eitherway, for gooners, its just one more thing to piss them off about this saga

Here's what fabregas says:

Quote

"These are things that happen at special moments, and I don't think it should be gone on about much more because it was just another anecdote of a great night, a great celebration," the Arsenal midfielder said.

"There are times we do not even know what we do, so everything can be forgiven. Pepe took me there [to the front of the stage], the truth is that I didn't know anything like that was going to happen and so I was a bit surprised. At first I thought it was a flag or something, but it's nothing. You had to enjoy it and if it's a way to have fun, it's nothing."

Fábregas grew slightly more serious when questioned further about where he will be playing next season. "I think now the less said about the subject the better, because these things are worse for everyone when they come to light and people talk more about the matter. Right now we have to be very calm and what will be will be."
