I don't mean players who probably have little chance of ever making the break through but players who are genuine prospects. there is very much mixed opinion bout whether it is more beneficial for youngsters to be farmed out to get first team experience or whether training in and around the first team squad would be a better use of time.

Looking at our current crop of 'near breakthrough' players and the need to name the 25 squad means there may be less scope for players being sent out for loans. If Di Santo isn't sold then he may well be loaned out again as he doesn't look anywhere near first team standard however I am thinking more about the likes of Kakuta, Borini and Matic. if they stay with us they might get a few 20 minutes here and there between now and January but if we loan them out they may get more like 10-15 games (depending on where they go). I would think Kakuta and Matic would both be welcomed by Robbie D at West Brom (and they would also benefit from playing the style of football that Robbie encourages).

Borini I am not so sure about as I suspect his injury has knocked him back a bit in terms of development.

Depends on the amount of depth we end up with in the positions they play.

I'd really only expect Matic (who isn't really a youngster anymore anyway) to be consistently on the bench given our current squad. The others are all a little way down the pecking order.

Van Aanholt for example is a ripping player, same can be said for Betrand. But with the squad the way it is, then Ash, Yuri, Paulo are all still in front of them meaning bar another terrible season with injuries they should go out on loan again.

Kakuta is also in a position whereby he is a little way down the pecking order as well, he's looking at Kalou, Benayoun and Anelka ahead of him on the right and Malouda, Zhirkov, Benayoun Kalou and Anelka who can potentially play his position on the left side. He's also not got a lot of front-line experience in the League. All are good reasons to send him out on loan, but given all the trouble we had with him (transfer ban etc.) I think he's a special case and will be kept on board and play a role at some point during the season.

Borini will be kept around because there isn't alot of cover upfront if our two older strikers go down with injury, he was unlucky not to open his account when he hit the post last season so I'd say he'll be floating around the reserves again in 2010/11. Bruma similarly (part. if we sell Riccy) will have a role to play as cover for the first team.

I'd love to see Mancienne kept at the club, as I still think he's a more experienced cover player in multiple positions than other youngsters who haven't really even seen first team action, but a bit like Jack Cork I'd say has the first team bug and would like to play every week, so I'd say he's on his way out for good. Similarly Di Santo, who I don't think really suits the PL.

I really hope Cork will stay this season as Belletti's replacement. What he showed on loan at Burnley last season was excellent, and he's obviously good enough to be in a preferred XI for one of the lower placed teams. I can see him making a contribution this season for us, but if he'll be sent on loan, it should be for a Prem-team. Not Swansea as the papers claim.

As has been said, it depends largely on who we bring in and who we release. I think the youngsters fall into three categories...



Keep for first team back-up

Matic, Kakuta, Bruma, van Aanholt or Bertrand, Cork, Mancienne, Gokhan Tore


Send out on loan, to a club where they'll get plenty of playing time

Walker, Hutchinson, van Aanholt or Bertrand, Borini, Lalkovic, Mitrovic, Phllip, di Santo

from what i've seen of him it's difficult to argue. the club apparently haven't given up on him just yet though. it looks as if they're trying to negotiate another loan, a prospective loan to Feyenoord having fallen through:

Recent history of loaning out players has had pretty poor results to say the least. And that's not just with us.

I know it's good for these youngsters to get games under their belt and experience playing in front of bigger crowds etc, but I would like to see us keep the majority of them and use them as much as we can. With the way injuries have gone in recent seasons it would be handy to be able to call on them and not be f**ked like Man City were when Given got injured last season and their ideal replacement was on a season long loan so couldn't play for them.

And play them all in the Carling Cup and see how the get on - with the likes of Sturridge & Co. Our CC squad this season should not include any of our main senior players like Drogba, Lamps & JT - complete waste of time.

Pretty much and I don't see a problem with that - not if we want to see our younger players make progress.

I wouldn't field a total youth team but as many as possible.

I cant see the reason with playing any more than 4 or 5 at a time, mainly because they need to learn how to play alongside experienced players much more than they need to keep playing alongside the same youngsters for years.

The idea that there is limited oppportunity for our youngsters to break into our first team is a misconception.

Let's face it. If a player is good enough he will make it

An example is Michael Mancienne who was loaned out to gain experience.

Now he has to prove himself when Carlo gives him the opportunity.

I dont think we will send as many players on loan this season like we did last season. Di Santo and Van Aanholt look like the ones who may go out on a loan to a premiership club, whereas Bertrand looks like will stay back to give some cover for Ashley. Apart from this may Sam Walker, Tore, Bruma could be sent out on loans as they are yet some way off first team.

Why not? Our squad is the thinnest we have seen in the last 6 to 7 years and it would only make sense to give the kids a run in the Carling Cup. To your point - its not just Arsene that treats carling cup that way, United too have followed a similar path and so are we if the last season is anything to go by.

Cork and Bertrand? Really? From what I've seen, they both could have promising futures at Chelsea.

confirmation from Sky that Jack Cork is going to Burnley on a season-long loan:
