Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira is expected to announce he is retiring from international football after 62 caps for the Seleccao.

31-year-old Ferreira will become the third player to retire from the Portugal national team since the side's Round of 16 exit at the 2010 World Cup, behind Deco and Simao Sabrosa.

According to desport.publico.pt, Seleccao coach Carloz Queiroz was contacted several weeks ago by the Chelsea defender to inform him of the decision, although the former Manchester United assistant coach attempted to dissuade him.

But Ferreira has now sent a letter of his intentions to Portuguese Football Federation president Gilberto Madail, with the decision effective immediately.

The defender will therefore not be available for Portugal's upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Cyprus in Guimaraes and Norway in Oslo.
