I really don't know why Scott Parker hasn't been given a chance as the holding mid. Parker playing behind Lampard and Milner/Gerrard/whoever in a midfield three could do a nice job.

His competition is Barry....
This was essentially my point. Parker almost single-handedly kept up a dire West Ham team last season. He's also more capable of playing a pure DM role than Barry, or any other players England have that I can think of.
"Best of a bad bunch"?

I would agree except for his age. If your going to settle for someone who isnt world class atm, might as well select someone who has a chance to improve to that level and play for many years.

Scottie Parker's biggest problem at international level would be the number of card he would get. However,ii addition to that, I also don't think he is good enough. He is well suited to a struggling side where a lot of his game is focused on chasing players down and harassing then - he is less suited to a team which is playing a more international style football rather than the traditionally faster British game.

The same thing happened just after the Euro 2008 qualification disaster. Lamps played with barry in the early 2010 World Cup qualifiers because Gerrard was out injured I think. We suddenly looked much better and Lamps was a big part in our success. Of course there was no suggestion from the press that Gerrard could possibly be benched and we ended up reverting to Lamps/Gerrard in the center during the finals with predictable results. Now it is Gerrard in the team the press unsurprisingly seem happier for Lamps to be benched. Lamps will probably have to work his way back from the bench but lets not forget how great the Barry/Gerrard midfield was against Russia away a few years ago. I'll predict they will be found out against superior opposition to Switzerland/Bulgaria.

And so the debate continues: can Josh McEachran and Jack Wilshere play in the same team

Very prophetic, forzby, although I doubt you had Montenegro in mind when referring to superior opposition. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that anyone paired with Gerrard in England’s midfield knows it’s a poisoned chalice because he will always get the favourable press, whatever the result. If England win, it’s down to him whether it be a goal, a pass (sometimes just one is good enough) or another of those ‘inspirational’ displays like the classic against the might of Andorra. By contrast, any defeat is usually in spite of his efforts to spur us on, as was the case yesterday, when the real truth of the matter was that he played so deep he was totally ineffectual most of the time.
Okay, Barry had a nightmare of a game, but I would ask the question…how often does Gerrard’s midfield partner feel he’s on a hiding to nothing, spotlight-wise, even before he gets out there on the pitch? According to the print world and most TV pundits, unless the icon is on a sulking mission on the left, we haven’t seen anyone fit to clean his boots in England’s midfield since the days of Bryan Robson, the original Captain Marvel, and you can’t convince me that Frank ever gets an honourable mention in this category because we all know that debate is merely engendered in the Media for no other reason than to perpetuate the myth that is Stevie G.

With Barry's performance yest , no doubt Capello will be hoping to see Lamps back into the team . So well , yeah Lampard will surely start the next england game if he is fit . Barry was pathetic yest .
A.young was diving , never engaged A.cole enough and no decent crosses - He was a waste ! I think time is up for england to find a better right back .. Mancienne can be tried , surely . And Mancini is right about A.johnson . He cannot beat 4-5 players every time he dribbles, no one can for that matter !
The best move could be Huddlestone alongside lampard with gerrard playing in the hole or try lamps and gerrard again in the centre . This will work out this time , says my intuition !!!
McEachran and Wilshere can certainly play together .. The next Xavi - Iniesta for spain ( Though I would hate to refer Barcelone players , can't question their quality ) .
