Too right !!  I saw him a couple of days later expecting him to be battered to f**k but he was fine.  Reckoned they surrounded him, gave him some lip but left him alone.

When I read the topic title, I thought it meant the ground, and not the inhabitants.
Anyway, probably the scariest moment I had at any ground, (and I do mean ground), was when Chelsea played Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It was the first time that Palace had been promoted to Division 1, and it was about 1967/68. When we got there the place was packed. There was a crowd of about 52,000, which I believe remained a record, and we had to take turns breathing in and out.
I had my hands in my pockets going in, and the next time I was able to take them out was 3 hours later when I got back onto the street.
The actual moment of terror was after the final whistle when we were leaving the ground. There was a tunnel under the stand which narrowed the further in to it you went. At about half way down, the crush was so great that I and a lot of other people thought we were going to be the headlines in the Sunday papers. Fortunately, we got spat out of the tube just in time, and the relief from taking that first breath is something that I can still recall today.
And do you know something? I still preferred standing at matches than sitting down.

our "Hillsbrough" nearly happened at spurs one year, late 80s, thousands of chelsea packed in and they were very reluctant to open the segregation pen to ease the crush (though they did in the end)

Yes you're right. it was over towards the Shelf side of the Park Lane End where the c**ts were singing "Let them die".  1-0 defeat too.

The home of the spammers,The Boleyn Ground for me,(the old one,not the mordern incarnation).

Guaranteed grief for the Chelsea fan,a place back in the day, to always be on your guard.

My mate got his arm broken in that crush agaisnt a barrier that day , F*ck me he could sue them for millions these days for that all he got was thrown out the ground and told to find himself a hospital.

Was that the game Speedie whacked one from 35 yards out on the volley into the top corner and was flagged offside ? great strike

That was 87 Nico Clausen came on & scored their winner with about 8mins left, we had 1,000s there that day, I bought a seat ticket off a tout & sat above our section behind the goal, the chants went up "open up the f@cking gates" which thankfully the ob did & 100s swarmed in to the empty seregation pen between the shelf & away end, the same thing happened a week or so before up at Utd aug bank holiday monday game we lost 3.1, our end was rammed behind the goal right around to the corner flag, the pen next to us had Utd in & 100s of Chelsea turned up late & the ob pushed Utd back & let in the Chelsea late comers with Utd singing "what the f@ck is going on" with us lot giving it back "Chelsea here Chelsea there Chelsea every f'cking where" great days.

What a day that was. I was stood with 'Kojak' and 'China' who was from Bristol. Me and China made our way over from Paddington on the tube and saw a few Chelsea coming away from the ground back into the tube station as we got there, which was not re-assuring. We made our way up to the Den and got in the ground just before kick off. We saw Kojak and he told us of all the trouble that had kicked off earlier. We were right next to the fence that seperated the CBL from the side enclosure. There were a few of the Millwall lads stood around us. Fotunately some of them also use to go over to Chelsea as well at the time and they knew Kojak. They were chatting to the three of us and obviously knew we were Chelsea. Each time Millwall scored they went mental and the three of us just stood there in silence. To be fair, the Millwall mob we were standing with were ok. They could have kicked the sh*t out of the 3 of us at any moment but didn't. Must admit as time went on I was feeling more and more vulnerable. Just before the final whistle me and China said our goodbye to Kojak and took our chances in the street. Getting back to the tube was a heads down, keep your mouth shut, hope for the best situation. We were making our way back to the tube and I just felt that me and China stuck out like a bulldogs boll*cks. There were lots of Millwall about looking to pick off any Chelsea. Then China said "O f*ck. Some of them know me". He had spotted a couple of Millwall further up the road he knew who also went over to the Bridge. We couldn't turn back at that point so just walked through with the crowd, fortunately undetected. We made it to the tube and I have to admit have never been so relieved to hear the sound of the doors shutting on a tube train. The next home game in the Black Bull Eccles told us of his 'adventures' that day. China had been going to Chelsea since the late sixties and knew Eccles and Greenaway quite well. Happy days, great memories.

Happy days indeed although that 77 away game at the old Den was anything but happy. Met up wioth a load of chelsea at Fulham Broadway and travelled down by tube. Got off and walked for miles and into the CBL end well before kick off. About 100 or so of us in there and then the fun started.

West Han away was always tasty and remember Wolves away when we were banned, Went up on the friday night and had a mate of mine stabbed in all the action that followed.

Somebody mentioned Cambridge....always had a good time there although another of my mates got nicked up there in all the scuffles after one match.
Other happy memories...Wigan away in a rearranged FA cup reply at their old ground that is. Got into their club house and had a good few hours in their bar area. Decent blokes and great pies!!
Loads more memories. Think I missed about 5 games in 10 years home and away from that era. Blimey, starting to sound like the old codger I am

Remember being a mere 'slip of a lad' and travelling up to WHL, around 70/71, with some of my mates from my home town of Basingstoke. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife at the ground and there was a large Chelsea contingent, with some of them wearing white knee-length dust coats with blue slogans painted on them, such as 'King Cooke' and the like.

I have never seen so much fighting going on at one time in a football ground and it went on throughout the entire match! We walked down Seven Sisters Road after the match and I saw a group of Chelsea boys pick up a metal litter bin and throw it straight through the plate-glass display window of a Jewellers shop, before reaching in and pulling out all the stuff on display. All the owner could do was stand there, frozen to the spot.

What a day!

Great thread. I wasn't an away fan, but I do remember the Clock End at Arse. Packed in like sardines! And QPRhahahaha back in the 70s.  Packed so tight you couldn't move!

We'd see more trouble on the tube trying to get home. I remember Derby at The Bridge back in the late 70s.  I was on Putney station waiting for the train to Whitton and around 10 Derby fans were there.  God knows why!  I soon found out through.  They had been chased everywhere and along came the North Stand Boys on the platform chasing them somewhere else!  Bad day for Derby!
