Sunderland Away 1985 Milk Cup Semi Final think we took about 10,000 up there for a mid week Wednesday Night Game . Recall we took about 60 coaches alone . Don't think we really travelled in great numbers outside of London until the late 60's
Don't think you can really count QPR as we always took the ground over when we played them

Staying in the 80’s I remember a huge following at Maine Road in ’89 (The 3-2 win in red & white hoops). We filled the Platt lane stand, the corner of terrace between there and the Kippax and there were dozens more scattered in the main stand and North stand, where I was sat with my dad. The following that day must have been 8000 plus.
Also, I recall another massive following up at Old Trafford for an FA cup game in ‘87(?). I was pretty young then but I recall we lost while playing terribly.

The last two away games of the 83/84 season spring to mind, at Man.City and Grimsby, both brilliant turnouts.
Wolves and Forest away in 76/77 were also impressive, but generally, in the 70's we tended to specialise in quality rather than quantity

Arsenal 1984 takes some beating but another massive turnout was at Fulham on Easter Monday 1977. We had the whole Putney End which was absolutely rammed, two thirds of the Thamesbank, most of the Stevenage Road Stand and the one by the river. My Fulham mates said they'd never seen the Putney End erupt before like it did when we scored a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat.

Arsenal away in 77 was the best we had away but also Bolton 77, Spurs 77, Sunderland 85, Derby fac 83, Leeds 83, Forest76, Blackpool both games in the 70s were not bad. Best for quality not quantity was Forest 1975 76, the special was only half full but.;;

Having only been born in 89 couldnt possibly comment on 70s and 80s
But barnsley away a couple of years ago was a good turnout..........6500?

Good mob at Blackpool in 76/77, excellent day out. Their end was fenced halfway across to seperate rival fans, a bit like Norwich used to be (some great days out there, too!!!), and our half was jammed. For some reason there were small mobs of Rangers & Septic nutters in with us, and it was kicking off everywhere.
To cap it all, we won 1-0 with a Steve Finnieston goal - if it wasn't for injury that lad could have become a Chelsea legend.

yes i remember there were quite a few jocks at that game, but I thought that the year before was better as it was unkown territory and that goes for all the away games of 75 76 as you only got the real hard core going because we were not a good side

Yeah, 75/76 was probably better in that respect, but I loved the following season with the sheer amount of fans we took away - especially as we were banned from away games for part of the season.
Some other away matches I particularly enjoyed round about that time were Cardiff, Plymouth, Bristol Rovers, Oxford, Sunderland & Blackburn - happy awaydays!

Hull was not bad, and york in the fac. I did not enjoy so much the friday night game at sheffield united ( apart from the drink before at Kings Cross) and Carlisle was a shlap.

thats about the same as we took to the fa cup final replay, which is the best support we have had at ANY game.

Can't argue with that, I was privileged enough to be at that game, cheering us on to victory from the Stretford End at the tender age of 12 - a night I'll never forget!

i also was at old trafford but i cannot get all misty eyed over the full members cup, but at the time any trophy and to be at Wembley was a bonus. As Bluebeard has already said before, the atmosphere against Watford at whl was good where we must have had nearly 40 000

2 away days in Manchester spring to mind for me. 1988 in the FA Cup 3rd round against United. Dreadful game and we lost 2-0 with Hazard and Nevin left on the bench. But our support was amazing and many United fans I've spoken to since then said it was as good as they've seen. I brought along a mate who was a Leeds fan and he said he was going to make Chelsea his second team after that game he was so impressed. Although the game was crap I remember a great moment from the start. United got a penalty in front of our end. As Brian McClair stepped up to take it another ball was thrown from our supporters and it did enough to put him off. He missed his penalty and amazingly the ref didn't order a retake. We all went mental although the joy was short lived.
The other great away day in Manchester was away to City in 1989. We effectively confirmed our promotion by winning that day as they were our nearest rivals. I was living in Manchester at the time and went to quite a few City games. A lot of Rangers came down and it was the first time I had seen an away team take over the corner terrace between the away end and the Kippax. Inevitably there were a few confrontation in that corner of the ground too. After the game we had a police escort all the way from Maine Rd. to Manchester Piccadilly which was quite a long walk. There were so many Chelsea fans that none of the locals dared show their faces along the route. I even remember seeing one of the actors from Eastenders walking in the Chelsea escort (I think he played a character called Rod?). A great day.

i remember the game at man utd, brilliant support. I think that we would have had the same in 79, we was drawn to play them on a saturday, loads were going up there and it was postponed, so the game was on a wednesday and their were no trains, we went by coach and not many went up. We lost 3-0
