Chelsea to extend Jose Bosingwa deal in the summer

Jose Bosingwa is set to stay at Chelsea until summer 2012, effectively ending speculation that he will leave the club during the January transfer window.

BBC Sport has learned that the Blues will take up the option to extend the Portugal right-back's current deal by one year when it expires in the summer.

The 28-year-old moved to the Blues from Porto in a £16m deal in 2008.

However, he missed most of the 2009/10 season with a knee injury, returning against Aston Villa in October.

Bosingwa has made 15 appearances for his club since then and played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Blackburn last weekend.

The Portuguese full-back made his international debut in 2007 against Belgium and played for his country at Euro 2008.

But he missed out on selection for the 2010 World Cup as he was recovering from surgery on his injured knee.

If we give him more minute on pitch, he can be old Bosingwa.

For me this definitely proves we are a club on the way down, why we are re-signing a player like this and not signing Roberto Carlos/Pele/Peter Schmeichel/Schroedingers cat/Postman pat shows the club has no ambition/money/interest/catalogues/clogs/pyjama`s......

yeah I saw that, was arguing with a mate at work over whether he meant it or he was aiming for his own player at the front post.

At his best Bosingwa is brilliant - agree with a bit more time he may get back there - on current form Ivanovic is probably first choice but I'd rather see a fit Bosingwa as he was so good going forward before he got injured last year

Roman Out, Sack Carlo, lets get Woy of the Wovers and sign REYMAN.

In an unrelated note, where is Octville these days?

I reckon they are keeping him as cover.

Ivanovic will move back to right back i think and then bosingwa will be cover until they find another right back and they will get ferreira off the books. Ferreira is of the old school crowd means he is probably on some stupid wages

Going to be an unpopular view but im ill be glad if he does sign the new deal. I think that he is quite underated on here. His crossing wasnt great at the weekend and has been in some dodgy games recently but then so has Drogba. I think once he gets back to his best he is class and with him and Ashley bombing down both wings we are a dangerous team.

Anyway i will sit back down before i get shot down.

I dont think you will get shot down, he`s obviously a quality attacking full back but has struggle a bit since his return from injury. I think we will see the best of him next season if he is 1st choice RB, though where this leaves Ivanovic is open to debate.

Never been his biggest fan and I certainly don't think he is the answer for us at RB but Im glad we are doing this purely because signing a player in his mid 20s on a 3 year contract for 16m or whatever and letting him leave for nothing when the contract ran out wouldve made us look ridiculous.

Before he got injured i thought he was quality. He had so much pace and looked quality with the crosses. But it was a while ago.

I just hope he can fully recover back to his best.

Good attacking fullback, still needs to improve a lot defensively. I think it's a good decision, we can't aford to throw players away for having a bad season. He's a lot better than what he is showing right now.

One year on from the start of this thread and this story has been on the radio today.

If it's true I am disappointed. He would have been the first out of the exit door for me. I've always been suprised that the Trading Standards people haven't gone after him for describing himself as a defender.

Quick, name Chelsea's youth prospect at right back.

As Money said, this is about depth. I think this summer AVB goes looking for a right back and Bossy becomes the backup. Iva stays in the middle, where his lack of true pace won't limit the team.

Well, Hutchinson would be the answer if he can stay fit and regain his form.
