I will be the devil's advocate to say we made a mistake by giving him a 5 years contract in 2008. Granted he had 2 great years with us, now what? He's been awful this year, and the Manager can't bench him because of his status. There are 2 more years left on his huge contract, will he get back to what he was last year? I seriously doub it. It is virtually impossible to offlad him because of his pay check. It will take a brave manager to bench one of the most hightest paid player. No other club in the world would have give a 30 year old a 5 year contract like that.

i wrote on cfcnet the other day that there has been a seismic shift from posters in regard to frank lampard.it seemed to me that certain players(especially the english ones)escaped major criticism even when not playing well, but it cant be ignored.yes the man is a club legend, and as such the club should give him a chance to show hes worth the contract he held out for.however he should imo be put on notice, instead of starting every game,he should be benched( a la drogba)once in a while.btw i thought a 5year deal at 30 was a right touch in this day and age,but i wasnt prepared to get slagged off for being negative about an english club legend.
He is one of two players who have been allowed to become Mr Chelsea i.e. bigger than the club, manager(s) and the rest of the squad.
Ancelotti will never drop Lampard, irrespective of how badly he plays, because he wouldn't stand for it.

Says f**king who? You make him out to be some massive c**t that'd cause as much disruption as possible if he's not picked for every single game - not something that I would attribute to Lampard.
There's no reason he couldn't do a similar role to what Giggs is doing at United IMO, and having a big impact on certain matches... but to do that he's going to need to be dropped - the fact he isn't being rested at all right now is more Carlo's problem than it is Lampard's.

I think Lampard would deal with it professionally, he doens't come across as being the sort of person to kick off over something like that. He would be upset for a while then just get on with his new role.

Should no longer be a guarenteed starter. Still a good squad player.

Maybe he got the contract because he DESERVED it!.We wouldn't have had half the sucssess in recent years without his goals and overall team contribution.
Show some LOYALTY, ffs.

While he isn't the machine he was, Lampard is still an important part of our team, something which became particularly obvious when he was injured.
Over this season, he should (and to some extent has) become a regular member of the squad, as opposed to an untouchable. If we treat Lampard right, he could still be a very valuable asset for years to come. He is far from finished, and he will only deteriorate to the extent that some harbingers here are claiming if we pile on more pressure than he is capable of handling, i.e. if we expect him to do the same thing that he has always done. It is unrealistic to expect any outfield player to be as effective at 32 (33 in June) as he was at 26.

Lamps has had an injury layoff of this proportion for the first time in his Chelsea career. Obviously he was going to take time to recover full fitness especially give his age. Combine that with the overall awful team form and confidence, its not surprising he has been below par.
I am sure he'd be back next season with full rest and recuperation.
Also I dont buy this we-need-like-for-Lamps-replacement thing. We need a creative midfielder, he need not be like Lamps...in fact, it would be to our advantage if he's nothing like Lamps. He should be a ball playing middle man, able to create opportunities for our forwards. He should be able to keep the ball in tight areas and play a great through pass or an early cross ball to one of the wingers. He need not be a goal machine from midfield. Lets be frank, there isn't one as prolific as Lamps in the whole world so searching for a like for like player would prove futile.
Similarly, I dont think we need like for like replacement for Drogba either.

I think we'll see the old Lampard next season after he has a break this summer. Following the double last season and the World Cup (and the World Cup disappointment) I think Lamps and JT are running if not empty then on the rust in the bottom of their tanks.
Don't write Frank off yet, but maybe as has already been stated he needs to be taking a more Giggs type role.

Dont think Lamps is finished yet, he does appear to be running on empty at the moment as the injury has had a huge effect on his fitness, he is not playing well and should maybe be rested to let Josh get a bit of game time ... but not to the detriment of a champions league place which is vital.
As for the comparison with Giggs, lets be honest here Lamps is no where near the fitness levels of Giggs and even fully fit 25 year old versions of the 2 players ... Giggs would be quicker and fitter, however, i think its not fair to compare the 2, as they are both different types of players and Fankies lack of pace (not fitness) etc doesnt (and hasnt) affect his career to date.

If you recall, Lampard wasn't great for portions of last season either. At the end the goal total was impressive but he wasn't a factor in many midseason matches. He can still be a very important player but needs to be handled properly and not considered an automatic starter in every league, champions league and cup game. With a midfielder of his age less can be more.

I'd like to see him retire from international football, but I doubt thatl happen, scholes had a dip like this and having them international breaks rejuvenated his career. He gets that much stick from England I don't think he owes the national team anything.

I think next season will be massive for us. Frank will get a break in the summer and I think that'll do him the world of good, but perhaps more importantly is the fact that the focal point of our attacks is changing from Drogba to Torres, that means that going forward we'll have to develop a new method of playing. I think Lampard will come back from the summer (along with a few other players actually) refreshed and raring to go for the new season but what will be difficult for him is changing the way he plays to both cover his increasing age and also the team system.
Too good to write off yet though.
