We should have loaned him back to Newcastle, they lost Enrique.

Agreed he wont play every game but not even being on the bench is a bit worrying if he didnt have some sort of injury that is.

Well we do have history in loaning players out where they still can't get a game...

Well, yes and no. Could be that we pick the wrong teams for the players, but it could also be that our players just doesn't do enough to warrant a place in the first team.
I think both has happened in recent years.

Somewhat, yes. If we are wanting our player to get experience and lots of games, we need to make sure we pick the right club from those available.

For instance, if Wigan already have a first choice LB who they are happy with, he's unlikely to feature much. Whereas if we picked a club who are short in that area and are requiring a LB, he is much more likely to get some games. No guarantee of course, but it would certainly improve the chances.

Tried to edit that post, but kept getting a popup error, so to add on briefly:

Sometimes they are unlucky, e.g. I think Kakuta should have got more opportunities at Fulham. But sometimes it's just bad business, e.g. that keeper we loaned out all of last year (Delac?), don't recall him making 1 appearance..

But Im not sure how we can blame the club for that. They can pick the clubs as best as they hope, but circumstances can change as with fulham last season, who really expected them to be in a relegation fight? The Delac one was odd, I would have thought there would be a callback clause if he wasnt used. PVA can play in several positions comfortably, not just LB though so I would have expected to see him a bit more. We are still fairly early into the season mind you, so anything could happen with him over the next few months.

The club are partially to blame for our loan players not getting a game and they should really profile the receiving club better. Of course, it all depends on which clubs comes in for the player, but i dont think it is too much to ask for the club to loan the player to a club where there is a realistic chance of him playing.

In this instance Wigan have Figuroa at LB, a player who has been well established in their team for some time. If our management thought that PVA would come in and displace him then they were optimistic and bordering on naive.

There were multiple other prem league clubs who would have been a better bet (i am thinking teams like Norwich, Swansea, Sunderland, Newcastle, QPR, Fulham and wolves) - but again, this is all dependent on who (if anyone) of them came in for him.

I dunno about that dkw. Newcastle and Sunderland have Ryan Taylor and Kieron Richardson at left back respectively, both of whom are midfielders by trade. Newcastle have made quite a tasty signing in Santon however, I'm looking forward to seeing how he progresses.

Ok, maybe good is a push (damn you for using Ryan Taylor) but they all have decent LB`s who are deserving of first team football. My point is sending a young player to any prem side will mean that young un will have quite a fight to get into their team.

Yeah I was just being pedantic; your point still stands, and also there's no real way of knowing what's going on behind the scenes in terms of who is in for players and who isn't. Sure on paper Newcastle are a better match for Van Aanholt than Wigan but it's entirely possible that he hadn't impressed them enough during his previous loan spell (although all the Newcastle fans I know are fans of his) or that Pardew was more interested in getting Santon or just that Villas-Boas (or whoever has the final call) wasn't a fan of Newcastle's setup or tactics.

Returned to Chelsea now. Made about 3 appearances in the league for Wigan. yet another loan deal which has seen our player barely feature. I'm beginning to wonder if, either a) any of our youngsters barring Josh are even remotely good? Or b) Does the club actually rsearch the clubs they are loaning to beforehand, or just let them go to the first club who ask?

Vitesse Arnhem have sealed the signing of Chelsea full-back Patrick van Aanholt on loan for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old had just returned to Stamford Bridge after a similar deal with Wigan was cancelled by mutual consent.

He has now agreed terms with Vitesse and becomes the third Chelsea player on loan at the Gelredome as Tomas Kalas and Ulises Davila are already with the Vitas.

"We have shopped around and the preference was for a left-footed player," said manager John van den Brom.

"The moment the name of Patrick came up, everyone was immediately enthusiastic.

"He is a talented young player who wants to show himself at the highest level and the advantage is that he is fit and is ready to play."

The Dutch defender has spent much of the last three seasons away from Chelsea with loan spells at Coventry City, Newcastle United, Leicester City and Wigan.

Last chance saloon for PVA I think. We were supposedly looking for another LB in the summer, and Bertrand isn't getting a look-in at all. So if PVA is going to make it here, he's going to have to have a hell of a loan spell in these next 6 months and hope AVB doesn#t still go and splash out £20m on someone else.

Best of luck to him. It amazes me that we are considering buying a LB when we have both PVA and Bertrand waiting in the wings

Probably AVB doesn't rate the two of them to replace Ashley or it could be that AVB isn't a manager who invests in youth. Either which way it looks most likely that PVA will have to find a new club/ home in the near future.
