Which, in turn, rather begs the question as to why the matter is in the hands of the courts at all and not simply being dealt with by the FA?

Because a member of the public complained, which means the police have to look into it, and should they think there is sufficient reason to suspect a criminal offence, off to the court it goes. The FA had no say in that as far as I know.

My problem with Anton is that he tweeted after the event, prejudicing the case, implying that Terry was lying. His brother tweeted after the FA announced the case wouldn't be heard until after the Euros, pressurising the FA to strip Terry of the armband, even if he didn't say it directly. What a c**t Rio is, it had nothing to do with him. Anton appeared in a pop promo, in which the word "ni**er" is used. The QPR fans, during that infamous game, sung songs about Drogba having AIDS, which are obviously racist in tone. Anton has said nothing about that. If Rio and Anton get stick, it's because they fully deserve it as far as I'm concerned. Anton has done the rounds telling the press how hard it's been for him, how he's been targeted for abuse and wotnot, poor lamb. Has he any idea what Terry has to put up with? Anton even has his own column in the Evening Standard now, so he's done alright out of this, considering no-one had heard of him previously. He's an attention-seeking little twunt. And he's a crap defender. Before yesterday's game he said he wouldn't let the boo-boys affect him. I'd hate to see him when he is affected!!!

It only goes to court if the CPS decides that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest to proceed. I haven't seen the evidence, so can't judge that (unlike a lot of others appear to be able to do) but I can't see how the expense is justified given that there is already a disciplinary process in place with the FA.  They seemed to be able to deal with the Suarez case quite happily.

Do I take it from that, you don't actually subscribe to the most basic tennet of English Law?

If or when he is found guilty of making those remarks then that will be absolutely true.

I'd beg to differ there.  The way in which he and QPR have reacted to this incident has made it quite clear that they are pre judging the issue.  That's their prerogative, but I would maintain that it is also the primary reason that they are getting stick from Chelsea fans.

I can't see how anyone can argue against this. Why would the QPR players have briefed the scumbags in the tabloids that they were going to refuse to shake JT's hand before the FA Cup match? If they were quite prepared to let justice take its course and let the court decide, they should have simply shut up and done the formal handshake. Their collective refusal spoke volumes.

If Ferdinand had not mouthed off to the press, how do you explain the story that the press wrote saying that Ferdinand had NOT accused JT of calling him a b**** c***? And even if he hadn't, that doesn't disprove JT's belief that he (AF) had thought he (JT) had said something racist (perhaps based on the two elbows Ferdinand hit him with seconds before)

^ We just can't do without him. He misses Barca, we literally have zero chance, IMO.

Sometimes, old quotes are the best quotes.

Isn't there only a single piece of evidence? A videotape? Interpreted by a lip reader? And half of what Terry said was obscured by a player's head, so we don't know everything that he said? Not a single person on the pitch heard whatever it was that Terry said? Not one?

Perhaps there's another videotape from somewhere. But again, we're deciding a man's fate based on the questionable ability of a lip reader. It's surreal.

I can't escape the feeling that the CPS bowed to public pressure and decided the safest way to handle a political hot potato was to let someone else -- a judge or a jury -- make their decision for them. Craven.

As for the Ferdinands, I repeat that something's wrong with their wiring.

Anton never heard whatever it was that Terry said. So Anton and his crazy brother Rio are outraged based on the word of a lip reader who couldn't see Terry's entire sentence.

Clearly they have a different agenda, one that has nothing to do with whatever Terry said. This controversy is a convenient opportunity for them to attack Terry.

To be fair to him, Rio was probably totally stoned at the time
