On a slightly related note, why didn't we have a poppy on our shirt on Saturday? We have
done in the past.

This article shows just how ridiculous this decision is, it basically points out poppy pins have become a symbol of remembering fallen soldiers.Such a moronic stance to take by FIFA, yet not really surprising.

I thought the reason we didnt wear them this weekend was because we had held our own ceremony at our last home game, with the Chelsea Pensioners leading the way.

I think its pretty obvious what this whole thing is about, its FIFA getting their own little petty revenge for England calling them out over the World Cup selection process. Theres nothing political, racist or anything else, its just a bunch of bureaucrats pissing their pants over a way to stick two fingers up at England. We are one of the highest earners for both FIFA and as clubs for UEFA, the money we make them through football is phenominal. So I say we tell them to shove it up their arses and withdraw from all FIFA sanctioned competitions.

done in the past.
I was going to turn the radio off, but instead emailed Talksh*te asking since they were so quick to condemn the club for this oversight, whether they would be just as quick to give praise for this:
Chelsea help launch Poppy Appeal
They didn't read my email out.. no surprise there.

FIFA have sort of relented and are allowing them to wear poppies on the black armband, not sure if thats too much better really.

From the FA site:
Which I think is a more than fair compromise. Now hopefully we can stop the arguing, forget that it's FIFA and remember what the poppy actually signifies.
Quote
FIFA permit England players to wear poppies on armband v Spain.
The FA can confirm that FIFA has today agreed that the England team will now be permitted to wear a poppy on the black armbands the players will wear during Saturday’s match with Spain.
While continuing to adhere to the Laws of the Game, wearing the poppy on the armband does ensure the poppy will be visible throughout the game.
The FA welcomes FIFA’s decision and thanks them for agreeing to this.
Earlier today, The FA announced extensive additional plans as to how they will support Royal British Legion in the wearing of the poppy.

This is the 37th time England have played an international between November 1st and 15th since 1918. Why is this the first time its been a big deal in almost a century?

I think its just the way the world is getting now. Its all about power hunger and self importance. Fifa are greedy, arrogant, corrupt and probably feel it has no importance, as it didn't involve them in any way. They originally didn't allow it, just because 'they can'.

Isnt it the first time we've played a game on the same weekend before the sunday though? Also I seem to remember poppies aren't supposed to be with after the sunday. Though I might be wrong.
