Here are the pots based upon the seedings:

Seedings for Euro 2012

Pot 1: Spain, Holland, Poland*, Ukraine*.
Pot 2: Germany, Italy, England, Russia.
Pot 3: Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Sweden.
Pot 4: Denmark, France, Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland

* Poland already allocated to Group A, Ukraine already allocated to Group D.

There are going to be some interesting group stage pairings...

Has the tournement always been this small? I thought there were more teams in it than this.

I believe it's always been this small.

As a swede I would not object to seeing us get Poland, England and Denmark or Ireland. Possibly Russia ahead of England, but we do have quite good statistics against England. Worst scenario would be Spain, Germany and France. Still think we could end top 2 in that group, but it would be very difficult (especially with that useless lump of arrogance Zlatan on the pitch).

I would not mind seeing this group: Spain, Germany, Portugal and France. Would be really interesting. And then perhaps Holland, Italy/England, Croatia and Czech Republic.

It goes to 24 in France 2016, which I think will make it even more exciting.

Its been the same for a while now and I wouldn't want to see more teams just for the sake of numbers. When I look at those pots I don't see a single nation outside of those that would be missed. One could argue about Turkey but over two legs it was evident that they are some way from being Europe's elite. I wouldn't want to see Estonia vs Spain at a premier event like Euro championships.

I do agree that this tournament is fine as it is, but I think Europe is the only continent that can get away with adding to their continental championship without diluting the product too badly.  None of these "extra" 8 teams will be winning it anytime soon, but imagine the current field right now plus some of the following teams: Serbia, Turkey, Belgium, Switzerland, etc. I think overall the expansion is a good idea, although it helps that I am just a neutral fan.

In my opinion, Germany are the second best team among the four, if not the best. If that group indeed got formed then my money would be on Germany qualifying to the knock outs.

I agree (personally, I think they are the best right now but they still have to beat Spain to prove it), but that doesn't mean I want them to go through a "group of death" just to make the knockout rounds.

Group of Weak... Group A.

Holland are in for a quiet summer: after the group stage the orange guirlandes can be taken down, while we blame the Germans.
