After watching Watford-Spuds today its funny to see how helpless Spuds looks without Bale and even Lennon. I think the goal attempts was 20-7 in favour of Watford and Spuds had big problems getting out of their own half at times. Everything went slow through the middle, wich was overcrowded and Modric, who Im really glad we didnt buy, played horrible. We would be alot better then spuds with a couple of quality wingers/Wide forwards and Mata in a playmaker role, Sturridge can be great, but he is to inconsistent in his performance.

Why are you glad we didn't buy Modric?

He won't win player of the season for them, because he escapes the headlines made by Bale, van der Vaart and Adebayor, but it is no coincidence that Tottenham turned from disaster once Modric got back into the correct headspace and hit some form.

People seem to think that because he doesn't dribble six players or provide raking through balls that he is somehow overrated. He is not that player, but he is a player that is sorely missed in our midfield and in fact has been since Lampard eschewed that part of his game in favour of more direct influence, about 4 years ago. Modric is the kind of player that can get the best out of Mata, Sturridge and if you believe in miracles, maybe even Torres. We have lots of chiefs in our midfield, but not enough Indians- Modric and Parker are the workhorses of that midfield, and their short passing and interplay is what makes their midfield arguably the best in the EPL, and allow them to create opportunities for Bale, van der Vaart and Lennon to run at defenses.

Modric and Parker looked like two headless chickens to me without a good wide option for them to play and some pressure, wich has also been the case other times Ive seen Spuds without Bale.

I think you underestimate the value of direct wide players like Bale, who very often beats first defenders and creates unbalance in the other teams defence. We dont have a player like that at Chelsea, people might say Sturridge, but other then a simillar pace without the ball, he is lacking passing, vision and dribbling. Against Norwich recently we controlled defence and midfield for 70+ minutes. Norwich was playing with a narrow defence, but even with all that space out wide, Sturridge and others plays support passes since they wont challange first defenders. This allow Norwich and other teams to easily cover the few passing options we have. I dont really see how Modric can help solve this problem, without him dribbling six players and playing raking throughballs, wouldnt he just add to our frustrating slow build ups?

You mention chelsea have alot of chiefs and not enough indians, I see it the other way around. We have workhorses in essien, romeu, mikel and ramires etc, but we lack creative chiefs that can play throughballs, unless Mata is moved in a playmaker role. We lack most of all someone to get past first defenders on their own though.

To address the isue of a "lack of urgency" that was brought up in the opening post, I disagree. January's a poor time to be shopping. Selling clubs will try to extort. AVB has made it clear he won't overpay. He said so last sumer and he's saying so this winter. He's also patient. This may drives fans like us crazy. But it's the right way to do things. Get the right players at the right price and you'll have a good club that doesn't fear FFP.

I hope no more players are bought in January. It seems obvious AVB can't find what he wants. It seems obvious someone else in the club is interested in Tintin, Willian etc. I hope AVB dissuades them from making a purchase. I wish he'd been able to dissuade them on Lukaku, but that particular train was already too far down the tracks when he got here.

AVB is acting like a man who has 3 years to build a contender. I like his self-confidence and I believe in his eye for talent over the eye of anybody else on the Chelsea payroll.

Give the man time to do it his way. I think we'll like the results.

De Bruyne might solve this eventually.
He's only young, but he's got some good experience.... be amazing if he could hit the ground running.
