10-12 years out of new signings is wishful thinking.

i understand the need for younger faces but if the quality isnt their then why not bring in an older player if he's the man for job? fergie has managed to rebuild his squad 4 or 5 times, and although he's bought the rooneys and ronaldos. he's also bought the likes of sheringham, and van der sar. simply because there werent any younger players that he deemed good enough at the time.

Spot on big blue.

Ferguson is a perfect model for this, he is continually retooling his squad, make use of older players but always ensuring that young players who succeed on loan are given a chance, while buying in areas of weakness all across the board.

This very much fits with what I am saying in the De Bruyne thread. There needs to be cohesion, and wholeness of policy that is about making the team better, over the short and the long term. Not random purchases in the name of 'youth' or something else.  We seem on these boards to have an obsession with age. If you are over the age of 27 then you are too old and we should buy a player who is 22 because they are younger and we need to be younger.

We do not need to be younger. We need only to be better. Of course being younger helps in some areas, but where a player at the age of 29 is better than a player aged 22 then why get 3 or 4 mediocre years (before we say he isn't good enough and look for someone else) when we can get someone aged 29 and get 3 good years out of them and then look at our options.

We shouldn't be purchasing players because they are 20 we should be purchasing players because they are good enough to improve the squad. I don't think VDW improves the squad, I think Srna for example does. Significantly, even if it is purely for 3 seasons.

Agreed that old fergie has deon a good job of blending old and new, van Der Saar, Larsson, etc have all done a job when needed.  But he has also brought in some decent youngsters in his time too.

The only thing that scares me about buying older players is the power of their agents. If we bought Srna right now and his agent got him a 100k a week gig for 4.5 years, then we are again looking at an expensive player who will probably be sitting on the bench for most of the end of their career.

As I said, its a balancing act, but agree we should just buy because "they're young." we should buy because they "make us better"

Who says the quality isn't there? I'm no expert. None of us is. It seems unlikely, though, that there isn't a good young right back out there somewhere.

I think they call this a straw man argument. You're arbitrarily asserting things as facts simply because they help support your point of view.

Who says there aren't good young players out there? (I trust AVB's judgment on the issue. I agree with you that Chelsea have a disjointed approach to buying players.)

At this point we're just going in circles. So I'll bow out.

Montoya is the best out there I'd say but Barca will have him in a locked cage so noone can get at him. He'll make the Spanish squad before Azpiliqueta does.

This would be a very good signing for us

Am I right in thinking he is solely a RB or like Lahm can he play both sides very Well?

If not I am a little concerned about the LB situation. Cole can not carry us forever and although im a fan of Van Anholt, is he ever going to be world class like Ashley Cole, the jury is out on that

Van Der Wiel will sign to Valencia, there's no doubt about it. He was at Mestalla when they faced Barcelona to feel the athmoshphere.

If Chelsea wants a good Right Back, try signing Mathieu Debuchy from Lille. He's very underrated and would fit very well.

Anything is better than the worst defensive player on our books, if not the worst Chelsea right back in history in Bosingwa.

Exept VDW is pretty much a younger copy of Bos.

Been saying it for months. Ivanovic at RB with Seamus Coleman as backup/rotation.
