Tweets suggest that the dead were stabbed, not crushed. Unbelievable. There's a real struggle for power in Egypt right now. One has to wonder if fans from some clubs align with the milirtary and some against it?

I lived in Cairo 2007-2009 and went to the big Cairo derby a few times, scarier than anything here, not totally surprised it's happened. The rivalry is deep and violent and remember they don't drink, just as well as I was standing on my balcony the night Egypt won the last African Cup of Nations while all around me the neighbours were firing Kalasnikovs and handguns into the air, a few miles away the army were firing artillery shells into the desert, they might have hit someone, they might not. Life is cheap in Egypt, like I said, not totally surprised.

Interesting post Westway. Thanks for your insight.

Terrible situation. You can only feel for the families of the dead.

Yeah, with that many dead, I suspect something other than being crushed to death.  The stabbings sound logical to me.

Scary stuff.

Over 1,000 injured and around 100 dead.  Absolutely tragic

Such a terrible tragedy. Reading the reports it seems hooliganism in Egypt is a problem, especially with one of the teams involved in this. Hopefully something good can come from this and it will stop.
