May 27, 201313 yr Chelsea set to secure Van Ginkel as Mourinho's first signing The Blues believe that the 20-year-old, who scored eight times as Vitesse Arnhem secured Europa League football, is capable of holding down a midfield spot straight away EXCLUSIVEBy Duncan CastlesChelsea are set to make Marco van Ginkel the first signing of Jose Mourinho's second spell at Stamford Bridge.A deal has already been put in place to bring the Netherlands Under-21s international, one of the finest emerging talents in Dutch football, from Vitesse Arnhem this summer to strengthen the Blues' midfield.Van Ginkel was central to Vitesse's success in finishing fourth in the Eredivisie and qualifying for next season's Europa League.A powerful, box-to-box midfielder, who both creates goals and scores them, the 20-year-old is regarded not simply as an addition to Chelsea's squad but as an individual capable of holding down an influential role in Mourinho's team. Van Ginkel scored eight times in 33 league appearances during a season in which he earned a first call-up to Louis van Gaal's national squad for last November's friendly against Germany. He was also prominent in the Jong Oranje's progress to this summer's Under-21s European Championship, where they have been drawn against Germany, Spain and Russia.Though Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord have all closely monitored the youngster's development since his debut in 2010 and Benfica have attempted to recruit him for next season, Chelsea's close relationship with Vitesse enabled them to secure the player's transfer.Roman Abramovich has helped bankroll the club's success by loaning them a number of his Chelsea youth signings. French forward Gael Kakuta plus defenders Patrick van Aanholt and Tomas Kalas spent last season at Vitesse, whose chairman is the Georgian businessman Merab Jordania. http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2892/transfer-zone/2013/05/27/4006681/-
May 27, 201313 yr Is he the 'Marco Van Basten' of midfielders? Valerie, does Van Basten mean = brilliant volley goals and Van Ginkel = strong box-to-box midfielder? If so...you are one weird country. Smoke and a pancake?
May 27, 201313 yr I can't say I've heard of him but here's the customary youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnWJLWO5oYw

May 27, 201313 yr You can't really tell anything from that but he does seem someone who would flourish in the attacking band more.
May 27, 201313 yr Difference between him and De Bruyne? De Bruyne plays in a decent league De Bruyne may play in a decent league now but when he was signed he was playing in Belgium. I don't know much about Van Ginkel but I didn't know much about De Bruyne either. He may turn into a steal so I'll trust the board with him
May 27, 201313 yr Looks like a young Mr Lampard, who, honestly, when we payed out 11m for Lamps himself thought it would turn out as good as it has done? A good risk providing the outlay isn't too much, he has obviously shone to the scouting staff as they have followed our loanees at Vitesse.
May 27, 201313 yr Like him already, although I don't know much about him. Will do the research today. We do need quality box to box rather sooner than later.
May 27, 201313 yr This does not smack of a Jose transfer. Hope there is space for him and KdB if we sign this lad.
May 27, 201313 yr Is he better than Jordie Classie? Is going to be one of those club signings where we buy him for cheap and loan him and see how he develops?. I really wanted Capoue.

May 27, 201313 yr Is he better than Jordie Classie? Is going to be one of those club signings where we buy him for cheap and loan him and see how he develops?. I really wanted Capoue. They are different, Capoue is more of DM / ball winning CM, while van Ginkel is creative / goal scoring CM.
May 27, 201313 yr They are different, Capoue is more of DM / ball winning CM, while van Ginkel is creative / goal scoring CM. That's probably why we wouldn't need him. We already have Oscar, KDB and Lampard for another year to take care of creativity and goal scoring from midfield. What we really need is a defensive presence in front of the defense. Capoue, amongst others, would fit the bill perfectly.
May 27, 201313 yr Van Ginkel could be the deep-lying playmaker that we've been crying out for this season in the heart of midfield.I think that whilst Bony has gotten all of the plaudits for Vitesse's success this season, Van Ginkel has been excellent this season and behind pretty much all things good at Vitesse.

I rather see Oscar and De Bruyne used in attacking midfield, where we only have four quality players atm covering three positions (Mata, Hazard, Oscar, De Bruyne). Unless we are buying Modric, Khedira or some other world class central midfielder, then I wouldn't be against buying Van Winkel/Strootman and Capoue. Sell Mikel, loan Romeu, wich leaves us with Lampard, Van Winke/Strootman, Ramires and Capoue to cover two positions.

Sell Mikel, loan Romeu, wich leaves us with Lampard, Van Winke/Strootman, Ramires and Capoue to cover two positions. You're forgetting Moses as well, Marin who's still technically on our books and Schurrle, who we'll most likely be signing. I have little doubt that, given time, KDB could transform into that deeper lying player that we're all craving for. I'm not sure of this Van Ginkel lad though, does he even play in a pivot? I feel someone like Jordy Clasie (as mentioned) would be better for us.
May 27, 201313 yr Or we could look internally at the likes of KDB for that spot. There'd be better deep lying playmakers we could get in any case than Van Ginkel. In an ideal world, we could combine Ramires' dynamism and energy with Mikel's technique, strength and passing, we'd have the perfect player to play the 2 in our formation and whilst they're both good players individually, this isn't the way to use them. Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Gundogan, Bender, Vidal, Alonso etc all the the types of players who would fit the bill for that description so looking for a world class player who can primarily be a deep lying playmaker but also offer so much in other aspects in the game is key. However, the problem we face is that there aren't that many players who would feasibly move. Van Ginkel may not be the answer, and I agree that we should be looking at someone who's world class now, but he's arguably been the best Dutch midfielder this season. May 27, 201313 yr You could add Modric there and in a right schooling Oscar could do the job as well.
