STAR WARS - Possible Spoilers

The Hux intro was something you'd expect from spaceballs. Then later on a scene with an iron that means this movie might have been spaceballs 2.

I just can't understand the thinking behind the 'humour' at all, I'd forgotten about the way the film opens until I was reminded. It's not like Star Wars is devoid of jokes or that it's fallen flat attempting them before, they're just so tonally out of place that they're actively painful. I remember the iron scene and my exact chain of thought was "hey that looks like.... on no they're really going to go there aren't th.... yep they did". Any feelings of humour you could potentially get out of them was instantly replaced by the thoughts "they have telephone receptionists and steam irons in this universe?". It's not good shattering your immersion in the opening scene

SPOILERS

I liked it. It's far better than the prequels and the turgid Return of the Jedi. It sits here for me:

Empire, Rogue One, Force Awakens, LAST JEDI, New Hope, Phantom Menace, Revenge, Return, Attack of the Clones.

Kylo Ren's character has been beautifully developed, the fight against those red dudes was amazing, as was Holdall plowing the ship through the First Order's. They handled Luke very well I thought. His disillusionment with the force and reluctance to help Rey. That twist at the end was great.

Dud points: Casino planet, Leia's Mary Poppins impression after she was blasted out into space and Snoke turning out to be just a NPC orc bad guy from Shadow of Mordor.

I don't get that complaints from fans, it's far superior to a lot of the older Star Wars films, many of which are badly made and poorly acted. The humour was spot on. I don't have any interest in the Han Solo film so I'll wait for episode IX. Though I'm not sure where they can go from here....

But like, they've spent 2 movies emphasising he is a discount darth vader, then put him in the main antagonist position. He doesn't feel anything as serious as Vader.

He's even more emotionally conflicted than Vadar ever was. There is a reason he smashed his mask up; the film makers rate Adam Driver's acting, we need to see his face and how he portrays the inner conflict, light and dark etc.

I really think they f**ked up with Snoke, you know- now Ren is Supreme Leader and that's that. The problem with having two different directors handling TFA and TLJ. Different visions.

SPOILER

Is Snoke actually dead though or was it a test for Kylo? Surely an almighty force user like Snoke would be able to sense the lightsaber turning. I imagine it was a similar thing to what Luke was doing with a force hologram of himself. Now he knows that Kylo betrayed him he can come after them both. Kylo and Rey have to team up to defeat him etc..

Either way it as a sh*te film .

The movie had plenty of problems, but it's better than the prequels and The Force Awakens. Finally we're at a point where we're ready to leave the obsession with everything being tied to Skywalkers behind and we can start to progress the story into a new direction. Although I'm afraid this trilogy will end up being a tug of war between directors and J.J. will attempt to nullify as much as he can about the plot twists in the Last Jedi.

Kylo Ren is not as strong as Darth Vader and that's exactly the point. It's (supposed to be) a new story. I just wish they hadn't wasted a better part of trilogy pandering to fans and had got on with it from the get go. This felt like an ending of a trilogy rather than the middle part, but in a way that's good because now I'm actually interested in seeing what will happen as we could at least in theory be heading into a new territory.

Like I said... The movie has plenty of problems, but at least it's taking chances again instead of playing it all too safe.

Used to be obsessed with Star Wars. The new trilogy kind of got me out of that. Maybe I've just seen far too many complex movies or shows since growing up. Feels like fan service movies, but they are alright if you want to have a good time in cinema :).
