It means nothing, Roman could sack Grant tomorrow if he wanted.

{SMILIES_PATH}/clap2.gif Great business move! Only been a top rank manager for 10 minutes!
Lets hope he keeps grinding out good results eh!
I wonder if anyone else was issued with the same?

Roman had to agree to a long term contract. He just couldn't risk Avram being tempted away by another top european club. I can see his point {SMILIES_PATH}/smack_head.gif
Seriously, why not wait and see instead of potentially landing yourself with a big payoff liability if things don't work out. If he proves a great success then he will still end up having to renegotiate the contract anyway.
Clearly the russian mind works in mysterious ways.

the club has been famously guarded about the details of such business, so i wouldn't at all be surprised if there is a provision in the contract which allows CFC to reassign Avram back to being Director of Football Operations at its choosing.
which would still allow us to try to tempt a big name managerial signing in the summer.
if you had told me back in September that Grant would still be the manager come the holidays, i would have thought it not possible. (however, if you told me that Grant would lead us to CL group stage top spot, and have a 14 match unbeaten streak, even while surviving injuries to Terry, Cech, Drogba, Malouda, Ferreira, Ashley Cole, etc., and within striking distance of the top spot in the league come the holidays, i probably also would have thought it not possible.)

Obviously the owner and the board see something in Grant that makes them think he is good enough to lead the club, at least this season. The length of the contract means f.a. since he could be fired anytime anyway. It's more of a gesture from Roman and Co telling Avram: you did well enough to earn it and to everybody else: this is our manager, we believe in him and his ability to run the club.
Smart move, especially considering horrible timing for Mourinho sacking, hopefully this time, with days before Arsenal fixture it will have a positive effect not only on the manager, but also the squad.

I find it odd he has a 4 year contract. Very expensive if they need to sack him. Anyway, let's hope it all works out for us and him.

I find this a strange move to be honest, great for morale but still unproven and not likely to go anywhere,
I would have given him a couple of seasons before I gave him that sort of contract but then Roman can afford to do something else if he thinks he needs to,
that said I am glad to see him get the backing and hope he makes a good long term job of it.
Roman again seems to be putting his money where his mouth is.

I hope so. I have no problem with Grant as manager in the short or medium term, but he shouldn't be our long-term plan.

I might be reading a little to much into this, but I can't re-call the article saying (although I only scanned the article once) that this is a 4 year contract as manager of the team. It merely states that he has signed a 4 year contract with the club...no mention of his role at the club.
I think Mannyjello might be on to something in that, if we do get another manger in then Grant will stay with the club but not necessarily as the manager of the 1st team. If he doesn't like that, he can leave, and the club wouldn't need to pay him off if he chose to leave?
Just my thoghts
Scott

aghhhhhhhhh!
WHY!?!
I think his done a good job at Chelsea thus far, but where is the need to tie him to a long term deal?, its not like we are going to lose him to Barcelona or something........
If we lose Drogba at the end of the season (which is likely) and fail to replace him, thereby struggling for goals next season, this deal could backfire very very very badly.
In fact, i'd say it is more likely than not to backfire on us sometime in the next few seasons.

from the OS:
Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Avram Grant has signed a four year contract as manager/first team coach.
i really don't see the reason in this but i hope grant proves me wrong.

Most people have said it all really. No need to do it at all. He had a contract and was going nowhere.
On the other hand the club have still failed to tie Lampard to a new deal when he is wanted by almost every top club in Europe and we are in danger of at the very least losing out on a massive transfer fee if he is sold.
Glad to see they have their priorities right. {SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif
More money than sense. {SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif

What was lacklustre about Tuesday night? We hit the woodwork I don't know how many times, we played some nice football and it was effing freezing!
I enjoyed myself (other than the three germans sitting next to me who didn't know which player was which unless they read out his number and looked it up in the program and who allf**ked off 10 minutes before the end)
