Seeing Bridgey's goal always makes me smile.
Another game worth mentioning was beating the League and European Champs in...........
Dec 1984.
Yup, we beat Liverpool 3-1. The first sell out at Stamford Bridge for years. By the time i got to SB the place was full. No chance of getting in. Stood by the Britannia Gate with about 30 other people (if we couldn't see the match, at least we could be there). We got a "running" commentary from a cop who went to find out who scored the first goal for us - Kerry Dixon of course. A few minutes later a bunch of cops waded in (no reason for it at all), i nearly had my head struck by a horses hoof (i could feel the draught by my hair) when a mounted c**tstable reared his horse up. About half the people there were hauled off by the cops for standing on the pavement. I sloped off and was sitting on a wall nearby (not obstructing the highway now) when a cop with a snarling dog told me to F**k Off, or i would be arrested. Nice guy, at least he didn't set the dog on me.
I strolled past the ground again heading east up Fulham Road - by now i was determined to see the match. Saw a bloke who had a West Stand ticket for sale at about two times face value. I just paid and headed back and got in. Speedie scored a goal, can't remember who scored the other. The atmosphere was electric that day. "Chelsea are Back" was the chant, and we meant it.
I swear i was floating about a foot above the ground as i came out of the ground after the game. We had just trashed the League and European Champs in a League game in Division One after five years out of the top division. Stamford Bridge had sold out for the first time in years. I had nearly half an Oz of quality weed stashed about me (another reason for not getting arrested). Live didn't get much better than that.
