"One day I went to Upton Park,
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the champions,
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the kings,
I saw Ron Greenwood standing there,
All Alone, all alone,
I said to him, 'what's up my friend?',
He said 'the Mile End's run again',
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the champions,
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the kings"
I remember this a little differently:

As I was walking up Tottenhan High Road
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the champions
I saw old Sammy Skies* standing there,
All Alone, all alone,
I said dear Sam what's up my friend?',
He said 'the Tottenham's run again',
Singing, singing, Chelsea are the champions,
Singing, singing, Chelsea rule the South"

*Sammy Skies was a well known Tottenham fan of the time.

There were a few variations, but this is the one I always remember.

Any idea the tune this one is sung to?

Going purely by the rhythm of the lines, I would suggest it is similar to "Mary had some marmalade" which if you don't know it isn't helpful! It goes:

Mary had some marmalade and Mary had some jam
Mary had worcester sauce and Mary had some ham
Mary had some lemonade and then some ginger beer
And Mary wondered what it was that made her feel so queer.

Whoops went the marmalade and whoops went the jam
Whoops went the worcester sauce and whoops went the ham
Whoops went the lemonade and whoope the ginger beer
And Mary knew just what it was that made her feel so queer!

As you say, there were a few variatons on that one!

I remember versions involving Arsenal/Jenkins, West Ham/Gardner, and of course the y*ds/Skies

Best one involving any of them was to the tune of Blaydon Races: -

"Oh my lad, you should have seen 'em running,
Running down the Fulham Road just 'cos the Chelsea's comin',
Sammy Skies and all the y*ds, you should have seen their faces,
Running from the Chelsea boys, all wearing boots and braces"

one of my favourites, though I remember a slightly different version: -

If you go down to the Bridge today, be sure of a big surprise
If you go up in the Shed today, you'll hardly believe your eyes
'cos Jeremy the Sugar Puff Bear has bought some boots and cropped his hair
And Jeremy is now the king of the skinheads

i heard that as well though liked this one :(

Sung to:

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more,
The Chelsea North Stand were running up the score,
Eighty Arsenal died in that spree,
When Chelsea ran riot at Highbury,
And out from the corner a hero arose,
A funny looking geezer with a big red nose,
His name is Harkins,
They say he's insane,
And the North Bank Highbury was taken again.

This is an oldie which you still occaisionally hear from the MHL.

Oh West London,
is wonderful.
Oh West London is wonderful.
It's full of beer, fanny and Chelsea.
Oh West London is wonderful.

One song that is always great to hear, especially when sung en masse in some pub on an away day, is Chelsea Alouette

Sorry Just, but my memories of that one are: -

"In the dark back streets of Liverpool,
Where the Mile End's never been,
Lies the chewed up body of a scouse git,
Where the North Stand kicked him in,
To hell with Liverpool, to hell with Man.City,
We'll fight fight fight for Chelsea till we win the football league"

Thing is, there were a lot of different versions of songs, depending on which mob you were with

Another thing, it makes me laugh when West Ham and other w*nkers say that the Chelsea mob were all from West London. The main mobs in the Shed in the late 60's and early 70's were all from South London. Anyone remember this...

"We all come from Stockwell, do dah, do dah,
We all come from Stockwell, do dah do dah day"

which would be answered by...

"We all come from Battersea, woof woof,
We all come from Battersea, woof woof woof woof woof"

CHELSEA  CHELSEA ::clap2:: CHELSEA ::clap2::

Ah, the good old days - I want to go and kick f*ck out of someone now, must control myself
I remember Stockwell having a major mpb, and as I've stated before, I also knew a few blokes from Battersea. And then there were the Catford Psychos - now them I could tell you a few stories about.

I remember one chant from West London, not heard all that often. admittedly:

We are the LBH
We are the LBH
We are the L
We are the LBH

LBH originally stood for London Borough of Hammersmith, but would also do for Harrow, Hounslow, Hillingdon, maybe even Hackney - but not of course the sh*thole that is N17 and environs!

Knew him to talk to, but can't claim to have been a mate of his. To be honest I was always a little in awe of the bloke. Always used to see him on the specials playing cards with his mates, and on the terraces... nuff said.

Same as Lofty really, often saw him on the specials, in the Shed and at away games. I was a quite a bit younger than him, I knew him to say hello to but that was all. And as for the "in awe" bit - same as, no question.

I wish I could do multi quotes, but the braincells have gone too far to start learning!

Here's how I remember it.

"Oh the Y*ds, you should have seen 'em running,
Running out the Park Lane End because The Shed were comin',
Big Jim and Sammy Skies you should have seen their faces,
Running from the Chelsea Shed, all dressed in boots and braces"
