Mancienne is about the same size as Ferdinand was at the same age. In time he will fill out even more because it's natural and the training regime will put him on the relevant programme to help this growth.

i dont think he is unfortunately, ferdinand was vary tall as a young un. i would love to see him fill out and be our next JT but i just dont see it. as G4 said, he could get pass the physical size probelm by being aggressive but i cant see that happening either, he just doesnt seem to have that in him. i just dont see him making it at centre half for us. thats not to say he wont play somewhere else, he seems more suited to playing in front of the defence and could become our new maka (or mikel) if trained correctly.

More mistakes for Mancienne today, falling down for no reason and concedes a goal

watching him tonight his problem is obvious, his positional play is appalling at times. he was constantly caught on the wrong side tonight and has been in other games ive watched him in. if he cant learn that part of his game then he will not be able to play at the highest level unfortunately.

In his defence, excusing the pun, Pearce did rather drop the team in it by starting with three at the back. Cleverly, by name and, on last night's performance, by nature, got the hang of it really well, but Mancienne struggled. Did you not think, dkw, that he was much happier with that change to 4-3-3 in the second half and by the time Pearce reverted to type, in the shape of a 4-4-2 late on, he was looking far more secure? Whilst I agree that he's still got a lot of learning to do he does look a class act on the ball and maybe his best position will end up being as a midfield shield for the back four rather than actually forming part of a back four. To my mind it will not be long before Jeffery Bruma and Patrick van Aanholt become stronger candidates for defensive roles, unless Mancienne shines in shoring up the Wolves defence, which hardly seems likely.

Agree that Bruma and van Aanholt have a good chance of overtaking Mancienne however I think a fit Sam Hutchinson is already head and shoulders above them all. He is a natural leader very much in the JT mould. If only he can keep free of injuries he has a big career ahead of him.

Agreed, geezer, although you hit the nail on the head regarding his fitness. His leadership qualities put him right up there, but JT has many years to go yet [hopefully] and I see him more as an understudy with the other position in the pairing being up for grabs when Riccy goes, as he may well do this summer. Speed is a main and complimentary requirement there - not sure Sam’s got that whereas both the Dutch lads have. I had thought Mancienne ideal to make the breakthrough and he might still do so, but, in my opinion, Bruma will prove he’s got the lot once he gets his chance and van Aanholt is already impressing at Coventry. These two have more versatility, along with Jack Cork, and Mancienne might have to show he can fulfil a number of roles as well just to maintain his place in the pecking order. Of course, what Hutchinson, Mancienne and Cork do have as a trump card is their home grown status and that’s not to be sneezed at these days.

bruma to me looks the most naturally talented with hutch not far behind. i wasnt basing my argument over mancienne only on the game the other night though dorset, any time ive seen him this season hes always seemed to be struggling positionally.  he gets the wrong side of defenders far too often and given his lack of size he will really struggle if he keeps doing that. players like JT, toure, vidic etc can recover if caught on the wrong side simply because of their power yet mancienne cant. if he does stay at chelsea i think theres more chance of him getting a place at right back than centre back.

Agree with dkw on this. The more I see of Mancienne the more I think he is a full-back rather than a centre-half.

Didn't he play as RB when he was out on loan last season, and got nothing but good reviews.  I think his speed and agility is more suited to an RB position rahter than being a little tougher and ahving to play in the centre

The problem with Mancienne as a fullback is that he's not all that great going forward.

If he ends up finding his natural position there, then he is going to be a Ferreira-style fullback rather than a Bosingwa-style fullback.

Assuming that Ancelotti is going to stay as manager for the next few years at least and that he keeps his same general style, our fullbacks need to be Bosingwa/Ashley Cole/Zhirkov types (lightning pace, great going forward), rather than Ferriera types, otherwise his system won't work.

I think if he is going to make it at Chelsea within the next couple of years, then he has to make it as a centre back.

Has he been frozen out of first team action at Wolves now?

He was ill and lost his place, although he came on as a sub at the weekend albeit in the holding role in midfield. I'm sure he'll be back in the first team soon. McCarthy rates him highly.

There is an article on the Sky Sports now in which Mancienne admits it was right to drop him due to some poor performances and that Craddock's performances merit his place in the first team.

So Mancienne gets a man of the match playing in the midfield?

Nice to see! I reckon Mancienne will fare much better as a defensive midfielder than as a central defender, let's hope so.

By the way, did anyone see the FA Cup match highlights on Saturday night? Scott Sinclair scored a great goal for Wigan against Hull.
