Classic Sevilla transfer play insisting on including Zouma. They get a player equally well regarded by France and 30-40m Euro from us. That's why they consistently punch above their weight in Europe. Similar to Leicester in their transfer work. To the normal person it would seem insane to trade out a 6'5 athletic centre back for one 6 inches shorter and slower and pay a premium to do that because of passing. Lots will say oh but we play a back 3 under Tuchel, his height doesn't matter. Which will be great until you consider this will likely be a five year deal and the average managerial tenure at Chelsea is two years. So when Tuchel is inevitably moved on and the next manager plays a back four, we'll have paid a fortune for a guy who will either be a very short CB in a back two or a backup RB to James.

    Jack Grealish

Most of his hype has come from people desperate to throw shade at Mount, and even that only started because the previous player used for that purpose (Maddison) fell so far off a cliff they had to find someone else.

If Grealish is worth £100m, then Haaland is worth double that. Haaland is absolutely worth £150m. Come on Roman, get that cheque book out.

I don't believe it will be done quickly. There appears to be a large difference in how we and Sevilla value both Zouma and Kounde. I expect it goes late in to the window, if at all. It seems any of our targets get a "Chelsea premium" put on them and our sales are expected at large discount. Casing points on the former, Rice 100mill, Kounde 80mill, Haaland 150mill. On the latter Emerson at half price per Napoli's interest. Servilla sold the talented Gil for a mere 25mill plus the sh*tty Lamela. Yet when we want a player the price is jacked up.

    Jules Kounde

“It’s surprising, a lot of coaches are wondering about my height. It is surprising that I can be good in central defense while measuring 1.81 m. [And] I feel targeted [by the opposition] but that, in fact, gives me additional motivation to know that my size will make them think that they are going to be able to step on me because I am not 1.90 m tall. [Thus] I win more headed duels than Sergio Ramos because the opponents don’t dare play long on Ramos. “They must say to themselves: ‘It’s Jules Koundé, he is not tall, we are going to beat him in the air’. [So] I play a lot more aerial duels than the others. They say to themselves that it will be easier against Koundé, and that motivates me. And it’s a part of my game that I’m working on because I know I’m going to be targeted [and] yes, if I face a striker of 1.90m who has the ability to jump high, it will necessarily be more complicated. So, I prepare myself by working to be ready on match day.”

  17. I don't think we will sign a striker, none of our primary targets seem motivated to want to move. All the clubs that would sell are neither in a position where they have to, or even want to sell. I personally see this as a blessing is disguise. Tammy hasn't done much to convince me he is our solution but I would be willing to let him try. Aside from him presuming he does stay or even if he doesn't we still have 3 other options. Timo playing through the middle could work with him moving out wide whilst players like Havertz and Pulisic attack the box. Havertz can reprise his role as either a false 9 or an actual striker. He looks very promising, we're still yet to really know this young man's best position. He's shown ability as a number 10, 9 and in between. Finally the player I'm really surprisingly more excited for than I thought I would be Broja. I'm pretty sure he will stay with us and I think he deserves a shot just like the previous academy boys got with Lamps. He's been on a similar route as Mount (loans) and I think he could suprise a few (not us fans we know he's good but the rest of the league).

This deal seems to be in some sort of mud now. Reports (not Fabrizio) are saying Zouma might be going to West Ham. If so we lose that bargaining chip. Same reports say we are offering Emerson in stead. I would believe that is the end of that deal then...Naturally we can always just pay up. They are saying it could be up to 70-80m Euros.....

    Jules Kounde

Sorry mwblue I should have clarified. I am using Kepa as an example of why you need to account for physical attributes when recruiting. He was a 186cm keeper when most are 195+ At the time there was lots of talk about his passing etc. mitigating any issues in the air. That didn't play out. Not only did we see him struggle against set pieces, his lack of height/reach also meant he had developed an unusual arm swing technique to dive further, which has been a disaster in terms of his ability to react and save. There is an old saying in lots of sports that you can't teach size/height so you recruit for it. With Kounde his height is a real risk in a league where set pieces are a real feature of the play of teams lower down the ladder. It's different to Spain in that respect where Barca were able to play 174cm Mascherano at CB for years without issues. If we wanted a good passing CB who was on the shorter side we could have kept Ake, who also has the advantage of being left footed.

Plus we’re going to need that moolah when we sign Haaland, aren’t we Axman, aren’t we!? 80 million for a midget centre half in the premier league? The French Nathan Ake.

    Jack Grealish

World class players win stuff because they end up in winning teams. Grealish is good, but still didn’t start for England, lacks pace, I’ve not observed him pressing and doesn’t score much more than Barkley. If he goes to ManC ends up starting in front of Foden or Sterling or Mahrez then we’ll see how good he really is. But in any case he’s not what we need. I like Werner’s work rate and pace, makes it happen for the team.

    Tammy Abraham

Its a bit unfair to say Tammy doesnt work hard, im sure he does. The issue with Tammy for me is that he just isnt good with the ball and poor technically. He can finish some chances, but watching him trying to dribble is hilarious

  30. I personally want us to try Cho/puli - Werner - Havertz Mount - Kante/Kova Purely for selfish reason. I want to be entertained, man some of the football under Tuchel last season remind me of Sarri ball, absolute snooze fest.

  33. I believe the only one with a feesible chance to get a spot on the XI (most likely a 12th player) is RLC in place of Kovacic if he's now fully fit and ready to kick ass. Besides the 9 situation it's the only other place up to grab IMO. Jorgi and Kante are a lock, and Kova is a very reliable option just missing that final pass or shot, if RLC can bring back his runs from deep in the Sarri days we may well stop complaining about lack of numbers from midfield. Based on this game I'd keep Chalobah, Broja and RLC for the squad. I liked Rahman's directness as well, which was a bit of fresh air after Alonso impersonating Eden, although he seems a bit sloppy or reckless.

    Tammy Abraham

Then was Tammy still burnt out after the restart? The simple reality is Lampard chose Oli because he trusted him more when the real business end games came about. It was proven to be a correct decision (one of Lampard's best) but this narrative we had a team brimming with youth players and Tuchel has come in and dismantled it bit by bit is utter nonsense.

    Tammy Abraham

Thats another myth that doesn't stand up to the slightest bit of scrutiny. Tuchel has an array of expensive attacking toys to pick from for his front three yet who's the one untouchable? A converted centre mid from the academy. James is still playing a lot. CHO started three league games within Tuchel first week, as many as the previous year. Started the (at the time) biggest game of the season three days after he was "thrown under a bus", a much bigger game than any he was picked for under Sarri or Lamps. Gilmour is already on more league minutes than under Lamps and he lasted the full 90 minutes against both Fulham and City despite being every shade of sh*te in the former and giving away what would have been but for Aguero's stupidity a top four costing penalty in the latter. And people forget Christensen is also an academy player, he was half way out the door pre Tuchel and now he's being talked about in the same breath as Thiago. Tammy is the only one significantly worse off under the new manager. And that's before we mention there's a lot of smoke that Mando and Sterling are going to be in next season's squad.

You do realize Giroud displaced Abraham as first choice in both of Lampards seasons? Was there a bias there too?

    Tammy Abraham

I had high hopes for Abraham but he went backwards last season. He has always had a knack for goals but you do wonder if he has enough about him to be a player who can perform at the top level (Arsenal & West Ham NOT being the top level obviously!) Last season, he should have been kicking on, but at times he looks far too lightweight, no good up holding up the ball, poor in the air, and spent too much time falling over. Shame, as I would have loved an academy player to become our main striker but just don't see it with Tammy and can see why DCL is thought of as the better players as he does have a more complete striker look about him.

  43. The chances of making it to the first team and getting a start regularly are very slim. Those young boys know how it works. This is not about what you think is a proper shot at first team football at Chelsea, this is about what they think is the best way for them to forge a career. And it's not about showing loyalty to the club. At whatever age they come to the academy (and by the way, kids from over the world are recruited into the academy, not all of them are London boys), they're being trained to become a footballer, and already at a very young age they can be released. I don't know the numbers, but you can be certain not all the 8 year olds are still at the club 10 years later. So talking about loyalty is silly, as this is a deal between club and kids: the club teaches and coaches, the kids get a shot at a career with decent or even extremely decent wages, no guarantees though. In return, the club gets either a player and don't have to spend millions of pounds, or they make a few million selling the player. All this moaning about academy players leaving is incomprehensible. This is how it's always been and nobody batted an eyelid before. So far we haven't sold our own little world class player and come to regret it bitterly. Just look at the recent names @Sexyfootball posted. What also puts things in perspective, are the Young POTY winners of the past year (yes, I had to google ) 2020 no award 2019 CHO. Still at the club, struggling to become a regular, not helped by injuries. 2018: Andreas Christensen. Still at the club, 1st team regular 2017 no award says my friend Google 2016 RLC. Still at the club, loads of opportunities in the 1st team, downhill after a dreadful injury. 2015 Kurt Zouma. Still at the club, 1st team regular. 2014 Lewis Baker. Officially still under contract, but on loan since 2015, a different club every season. 2013 Nathan Ake. After 3 loans finally left for Bournemouth, where he carved out an excellent career, and was even signed by City. Not a regular there however. Remember how he was hauled back from his loan at Bournemouth, only to sit on the bench? 2012 Lucas Piazon. I think he obediently showed up every pre-season, to be sent out on loan (7 clubs). Now sold to Braga. 2011 Josh McEachran. He's already 28! Loaned to 5 clubs, didn't impress, at least not consistently. Now at MK Dons. A decent-ish career, but always mentioned in discussions about wasted talent. 2010 entire under 18 team 2009 Michael Mancienne. Oh how we dreamed of his glorious future. Two longish loans, then a bit of a wanderer. Just came back from an American adventure and signed for Burton Albion. Well, you can look up the list if you're interested in the rest of the lot. There's JT for instance, but also Sam Dalla Bona. But you may catch my drift: the club got it pretty much spot on in their decisions who to keep, who to sell, and who to release. If they really think the next lad threatening to leave is our Ronaldo, then I'm sure they will move heaven and earth to keep him.
