You know what, for a player who has largely failed to live up to expectations, the level of support the guy receives on matchdays is immense.

I'm not even too sure what he has done to endear himself to the home support that regardless of his form they always will him to do well.

He's had more fan backing than some players who weren't big money players.

I believe behaviour that doesn't have a place in the game (including clawing at an opposition player's face) deserves suitable punishment, yes. It doesn't matter to me if the player plays for my club. It can't be allowed.

Probably is going a bit far to say violent conduct but given players have been sent off for less I'd say Torres is one very lucky man indeed. Apart from the unfortunate knee injury that rules him out, that is.

On that note, we just have to hope Eto'o is up to the job, since Ba seems completely out of favour and Everton have our best goalscorer.

Defenders always get the benefit of the doubt in 50/50 challenges in their half unless it's blatant, I just have to remain everyone how Drogba got yellow carded for Johny Evans kung fu kicking him in the chest and breaking his ribs. After that decision nothing can really surprise me

Why is that relevant? If you've played or watched the game at any level then you know that shots on target can be misleading; plenty of good opportunities go over the bar or strike the post.  I have absolutely no doubt that Torres is a more clinical finisher than Eto'o based on previous history but that means squat if your striker is not even getting himself in good positions to take a shot. I am simply saying that a shot = a goalscoring chance. Eto'o, in a equal number of minutes but less games manager to amass more than Torres has done all season. It's more of the same from Torres, who continues to do everything but the job that we need him to do.

My opinion about Torres' performance against Tottenham will no doubt be wildly unpopular but it's grounded in fact and that is that he failed to get in to goalscoring positions, yet again. I thought he did great really getting stuck into defenders and showed some real desire for half an hour, but if that's all we need from our forwards then we should've brought in Grant Holt instead of Eto'o. The harsh reality is that his great desire was channelled everywhere but into getting in the goalscoring positions- Torres amassed a single shot on target. The video of his best moments against Spurs (posted earlier) was a nice summary for exactly the wrong reasons as his best touches were again deep or out wide and nowhere near the box where you'd expect a striker to be. No doubt that someone will happily inform me that I am ignorant and mistaken as Torres is not a striker but a deep-lying wide-forward trequartista in the style of some obscure Hungarian.

SP, statistics are not some magical, shapeshifting creature. They are simply a neutral person (in this case, the media) counting the things they see and they are recorded down so to avoid the perils of selective memory. What we "see" is merely the accumulation of all those different statistics playing out in front of us. You can, if you like, refuse to be objective and rely on your own memory, but I can't see that as anything more than a stubborn refusal to enter meaningful discussion. Statistics are only there to quantify objectively what people see.

Torres will get a four game ban and I'm afraid nobody can argue. The letter of the law is quite clear, it was a red card offence. Automatic three game ban. He lost control under provocation but it's up to him to keep his composure and I'm afraid he can blame nobody but himself.

He was carded for the trip, which was a bit harsh IMO, and the second yellow was harsh, obviously, but Torres needs to be a bit cuter. He's always getting in referee's bad books because of his petulance and his general demeanour. Quite frankly, he needs to become street smart. He clapped the officials in the first-half, sarcastically, when he wanted a foul, and this is typical behaviour. He just doesn't command respect from officials. He comes across as weak when he's trying to look tough. He's an easy target as a result.

It's a shame because he was playing well and we were going to win, but having got away with the incident with Vertonghen, he was ill-advised to continue his running battle with the defender. That was just stupid. It was always going to end in tears. He's an experienced player and he should know better.

We can blame Vertonghen all we like but Torres should have used his brain. Far better to stay on the pitch and grab the points. That's how you really hurt Vertonghen. Get a goal.

He had been testing Dean's patience so he needed to be more careful, and he wasn't, he gave Dean the option of showing red, and show the red he did, inevitably.

Before we castigate Dean, I thought he refereed very fairly. He gave them a yellow first-half for diving. Ramires deserved a yellow in the first-half for kicking the ball away stupidly but was spared. Sure, he got the big call wrong but it looked bad to the naked eye, or overly aggressive at least. That's where Torres was stupid, because Dean knew he had beef with Vertonghen so he was going to be watching the two of them closely.

Torres played well second-half. He set up a couple of very good chances and he looked up for it. It's no more than we should expect however it's just that our expectations have fallen so low. It was encouraging. Now he just has to go out and win a game for us, as strikers of other clubs do all the time. We have every right to expect that of our strikers, it's just that it's been so long.

Unfortunately, as he did against Swansea under AVB, he's sabotaged himself and us by getting sent off just as he was discovering form, and again he can blame nobody but himself. I'm afraid it was rank stupidity. That doesn't make him a bad player. Drogba was stupid on occasion, as we all know. I'm not criticising his performance I'm just not apportioning blame to the officials or Vertonghen. I'm afraid Torres has to look at himself. He's left no room for manoeuvre on this one. He's going to be banned for four games and that doesn't help us one bit. It was a stupid red card and I don't see too many of our players getting stupid red cards, I see them keeping their emotions in check, and using their brains, most of the time.

Torres needs to start contributing to wins if he really wants to turn his fortunes at Chelsea around. He played well for thirty minutes, that's the reality. No more no less. We had them on the rack and we could have won, then he was sent off, that's the reality. It was a good day and a bad day at the office. One day he may just give us a good day.

    Here's hoping.

Hazard hasn't been burdened by much more defensive responsibility this season, on the other hand you are correct that A.Cole both doesn't get involved up top enough and there are few runs on the by line by him. I mean as poor as Hazard has been by his standards so far the player who has dropped off the most is Ash by a fairly large margin.
Not that Iva is some forward running maverick but he has been far more effective when going forward and does provide options for the right midfielder on occasion.

I'd probably start Torres today as Eto'o could likely do with a rest but to come to the conclusion that Torres is our best striker after Eto'o has had two games and is way off of match sharp, Ba has had one start and a couple of late appearances and Torres has had two and a half years of everyone trying everything to get some form out of him seems to me just a tad unfair on the other two.

I know the forum is to discuss our ideas and air our fears etc but I really think making judgements on players that have had such massive difference in game time is
premature...how would people feel if the Manager looked at a couple of performances by, lets sayfor instance Mata and made a snap decision that Oscar was the better player...I don't think he's made that decision but the uproar in here at the thought he might have shows just how unfair that sort of thinking is.

It was a tongue and cheek comment shed, last season when our other striker wasn't played some people said that it's due to the fact that obviously Torres was doing well in training and that we should trust RdM.

I don't know who our best striker is, probably Lukaku - Torres has scored 1 goal in the EPL in 2013 which is one goal more than Eto'o and one less than Demba Ba

I don't rate him that highly but he will be a good player for Liverpool make no mistake about it and will allow them to have a more physical options on the wing compared to Coutinho/Suarez/Sterling.

I just don't think we should do any business with Liverpool; we bought a load of crap from them and sold them our best striker
