You are currently crediting him for winning a free kick 30-40 meters away from goal - which is a similar contribution to making a 2 yard pass 30 meters from goal.

    Just imagine my outrage

Touches are basically not counted individually, touches refers to when a player receives possession - not how long and how many times he touches the ball when he does have possession.

What is relevant is that our defenders are more likely to receive the ball inside the box than our striker.

If he starts over 10 matches in the League for us this season and performs like he did against Hull it will cost us, we should not be counting on our Midfielders to score important goals that's a striker's job.

I didn't see any difference between the player last night and the player who took 14 matches to get his first goal; went on 24 hour scoring drought; went 6 months without a goal in the League. Decent is reserved for teams that don't have our ambitions, as proved by last season decent and passenger performances will not win us the League. Opposition defenders aren't going to be afraid of our striker because he works hard or he links up decently. They are going to be instilled with fear when we have a striker who bullies them, knows how to move inside the box; knows how to get in shooting position and all those things are things that Torres is below average at best.

Roll on Lukaku you have nothing to worry about based on this performance

Might come across as a a bit daft but I just don't get how people justify Torres' place in the squad by his ability to link up a play. If all he did was hang on the shoulder of the CB ala Inzaghi and scored goals, we won't be in our present predicament of uncertainty about our forward options. By definition he is a forward and their high valuation and pay scale is due to the ability to score goals and determine the outcome of games.
Personally I feel putting the burden of goal scoring on our midfield players is a difficult one, and if we get 45 goals out of all of them I would still deem it a successful season. 80+ league goals should get you in the top 2 based on the last 5 seasons; hypothetically 45 from midfield, 5 from defence and we will need about 30 from our forward options. For argument sake can I see all 3 chipping in with 10 league goals? Lukaku; Yes, Ba; Maybe, Torres; No (drops too deep to get involved, movement in the box is all wrong and not instinctive enough).

The reason strikers make runs is because it's difficult for defenders to intervene if there is someone breathing down their neck - when Torres moves back he removes the pressure off the central defenders. This is an act he does quite often waiting for the perfect pass into his feet instead of actually giving whoever is on the wing more options. The position he usually moves back into is a position which naturally a guy like Hazard; Lampard; Oscar; or Mata would run into but due to Torres falling back into that position it actually lessens the options which our wingers have. Fact is that the Milan defender who was shadowing Hazard was in a good position to cut out any pass into the area Torres backed into, while if he had remained forward close to the goalkeeper and central defenders he would put pressure on them and they might make a mistake and he would have an easy tap in to make.

in my opinion, he should have made that run to the back post. the defender (number 17) was clearly worried about him as he was constantly looking over his shoulder for torres... until torres dropped back into the ever decreasing 'space'. ask any defender and they will tell you they want the striker in front of them where they can see them. had torres run off the back of 17, he would have been far more concerned and torres would be more likely to escape his attentions and score.
however, i do agree that it is only pre-season, and much as i dont think torres is good enough, i dont think we should be sticking the knife in at every available opportunity. just thought id throw my thoughts into the discussion

Nobody knows what Torres will turn up? Do me a favour. The same Torres that hasn't shown up for the last two and a half years. Some of you are so deluded it's unbelievable.

His record in the Prem is atrocious and his performances have been even worse. Have you not been watching? Jose's been watching and you can bet, as soon as he knew the Chelsea job was his, he started watching every single game we played last season. Why do you think he's going for Rooney? Because he knows exactly which Torres will "turn up".

Torres has been given star billing, he's been given loads of creative players, he was given his old manager at Liverpool, he's been playing for a team far stronger than most of the opponents it faces in the Premier League. He's been given two and a half years. He's been given preferential treatment.

Lukaku wants to go to the WC, right? He wants to play, right? He made that clear. Jose told him to come back and he'll play because Jose knows a player when he sees one. So, if Lukaku is going to play but is too raw to be our front-line striker and Jose wants Rooney .. I think that tells you exactly what Jose thinks of Torres.

Torres just ain't good enough and that would have been made abundantly obvious to Jose after watching a few of our games. I promise you, if it had been any other player over these last few years, nobody, but nobody would be saying they don't know which player is going to turn up next season.

He's not a Jekyll and Hyde player .. He's not unpredictable .. He's not inconsistent .. We know exactly which player will be turning up .. There is only one Fernando Torres .. And he's not very good.

Did you watch our game up at Anfield last season? Torres inexplicably played, despite the fact Ba was bang in form, had produced in big games against big teams, and despite the fact Torres had just played midweek and Ba was rested. Did you see Torres' performance? Can you explain why he wasn't subbed? Did our manager think like you, wondering which Torres might suddenly appear in a few moments? The reason I bring it up is this ..

I'm not a massive fan of Sturridge but I said all along he was a million times better than Torres. Any idiot could see that. He has pace, he has skill, he drives into the box and he scores goals. He played 45 minutes at Anfield, the first and only time he has played against us, and he completely changed the game. He showed more in that 45 than Torres has ever shown us. Torres has never given us anything remotely like that and that's what you want, nay, that's what you need. Yes we all know Sturridge is flawed but Torres couldn't perform like that if his life depended on it.

Torres just hasn't got it. Full stop. Open your eyes everybody. He could only perform on Thursday nights. Why? Coincidence?

No doubt this will upset a few people but there you go, I just had to respond to the quote above. I find it incredible that anyone can still be in any doubt as to which Torres will "show up".

You'll only get the Torres of Thursday nights if he plays on Thursday nights. You won't get that Torres on Monday nights, Tuesday nights or Wednesday nights. He needs to go to a club with more modest aspirations.

Right .. I've got that off my chest .. I'll duck for cover now.

How many managers has Torres had since moving from Liverpool? 4 (not including Jose yet) with Chelsea and the manager of the Spanish team. Not one of those managers could get him back to his best. Not even Rafa could get him back to his days of old.
When will people wake up and realise that Torres is finished at the top level? You can hope that Jose has some kind of special power that will turn Torres around and become a feared striker once again but like every season since he has joined us you will end up disappointed come the end of the season.

And Mata doesn't get into one of the best sides to ever play football, should that mean sell Mata and sign some one who Del Bosque prefers

Actually scratch that idea, fire Jose - sign Del Bosque he's made Torres a goal scorer at the Confed Cup and European Championship, he will turn him around at CFC

I don't know about criticism, it's just that you cannot account goals against Tahiti and draw any conclusions from that match - against Nigeria he scored a good goal after some good movement inside the box. Which is one of my main gripes about Torres, movement inside the box in a blue kit he doesn't make enough runs or is outside of the box too much while we get the ball down the flank. Cavani has not been good for Uruguay for at least 3-4 years, his National Team form has always been poor - I try not to read too much into that because of his performances in Europe and Serie A over the last few years which have been very good. Personally I'd prefer Lukaku be given a chance but that's up to Jose

The thing about Torres is that he hasnt been much better this year then last. Yes he has scored more, but he has also played A LOT more games against weaker sides. When you look at his overall play its usually piss poor. Wanders around looking disinterested, dosnt win a single duel and loses the ball the moment he gets it. Thats the majority of Torres performances this year. Fair play to the lad, he had a few games this year when he was rather good, but I can count them on one hand. Thats just not enough for a team looking to challenge for the premiership, regardless of what his overall goal tally looks like.

It isn't a good season. It would be if we were a mid table club, but we aren't. There's nothing to consider about substitutions etc. He basically had August - December for himself then Ba was brought in. If you want to take things into account, how many game winning goals has he scored in the PL? Or how many of those 8 goals were against a top side?

Oh i'm a huge fan of the guy. I was really happy we were signing him but given my family are mostly Liverpool fans u can see the situation i'm in given he looks nothing like the player he was with them.
Also, i find it irritating that he assumes we're all d**kheads. When he is asked about staying on with us he always says 'well i have three years left on my contract' when i really wish he would just say that he wants to stay cos he wants more big trophies. It's clearly nothing to DO with having a contract and everything to do with whether things are going his way. He wasn't talking about his contract when he was whinging after the CL win and he wasn't talking about it when he walked out on Liverpool for us when he had three years left there.
Simply put, i am a big fan of his, but he can be quite devious and dishonest.

    Torres's goals this season:
Yellow = Goals impacting the result.
    Green = High Quality Opposition.

He has scored 8 EPL goals this season, only 2 coming against teams in the top half.
He has made 13 appearances off the bench this season for Chelsea, not scoring one goal.
Of his 23 goals for Chelsea this season, only 7 have altered the result.
Of his 23 goals this season, only 9 have come since Christmas (Ba signing probably also impacted this).
Of the 23 goals, only 5 have come against teams to be considered (by me) as high quality opposition.
He has appeared in 30 games we have either lost or drawn this season, only scoring in two of these games. One being the Community Shield, the other being a EL loss to Rubin where we progressed anyway.
    ----------------------------
I'll let people make their own interpretations of these facts, and obviously goals alone don't take into account his contribution to the match as a whole.
I'm just bored and felt like doing something.

Not quite true though is it Evissy? Just like a few pages back when Shed Pensioner was saying no-one was suggesting Torres should be starting important games, then lo and behold, on the Tottenham match thread loads of people saying they hope he starts.

It is likewise for your "we want to see him gone" statement. Not true. I may do. You may do. But there are plenty who don't. See Andreas' post above for starters though he caveats it with the phrase "as back-up". Incidentally, I would ask what makes people think Torres would be prepared to be number 2 or 3 in the pecking order? Last season he ended up, quite rightly, playing second fiddle to Drogba and we found out how unhappy he was about it the moment the final whistle blew in Munich. What has changed? We know how mentally fragile he is. How quickly his head can drop, how quickly his body language can change. Do people really believe he will take a positive mental attitude to that? Do they believe he will be the sort to say; "righty oh, 2nd choice am I? Well I am gonna roll my sleeves up and show you lot". Past experience tells us, probably not. Meanwhile we have £50 million £200,000 a week player taking up a crucial squad place.

Your mistake is thinking my comments are biterness. Wrong. It isn't biterness Evissy, it's reality. I am glad he played well last night. TBH I really didn't care who scored last night so long as someone did, and he was that man, and a good finish too. But, as I said before, longterm, it doesn't change a thing. If we want to move forward as club and overtake the likes of United, Citeh, Bayern, Real etc. we need a genuine, consistent, top class centre-forward to do it. And unfortunately that is not................... Fernando Torres.

Wonderful post Castiel. Agree with every word.

I really cannot believe that anyone is seriously blaming the service and creativity provided by Hazard/Oscar/Mata. Put RVP, Aguerro, Suarez and, yes, even young Mr Sturridge, at centre-forward in place of Torres and they would all make and score more goals than he. They would achieve that through their superior positional play, anticipation, movement, ball control and striker's instinct.

Of course I hope Torres plays well and manages to score tomorrow night, but it won't change the overall judgement of him in the slightest. However, it may help get his name back in lights and a attract potential buyer. With the immenient departure of the FSW and, hopefully, the return of Jose, we will have a Torres-free future sooner rather than later I think.
