Posted August 1, 200915 yr Is this how everyone else sees it as of now? Is the diamond truly the best option for our team if Pirlo comes? I mean if Pirlo gets to start, we're going to have a lot of class midfielders on the bench (if we stay healthy) even during ANC months and I'm sure Ancelotti will want Pirlo starting. But then again a 4-5-1 leaves Anelka/Drogs/Sturridge/Di Santo on the bench. I guess this is a good problem to have? I'm not sure how long the players kept on the bench will stay happy. We almost need an FA/Carling Cup team and a League/CL team. But I guess since our guys are all injury prone maybe it will all work out? I doubt we'll need a Miniero this season. ----------------------------------------Cech/Turnbull/Hilario Bosingwa--------------------------Alex---------------Terry-----------------------------------------Cole Ivanovic------------------------Carvalho------------Repeat-----------------------------------Zhirkov Ferreira-------------------------Ivanovic--------------------------------------------------------Hutchinson Belletti-------------------------Mancienne------------------------------------------------------Mancienne -----------------------------------------------Pirlo(does he take over this spot?) -----------------------------------------------Mikel -----------------------------------------------Essien -----------------------------------------------Ballack -----------------------------------------------Belletti -----------------------------------------------Deco? August 1, 200915 yr Would we be allowed to field that many players :D We still wouldn't be allowed to win the CL.
August 1, 200915 yr apart from the fact that the wide right and left positions are really, in general, narrow (and central), I think that's almost exactly what the pecking order would be. good effort. I think it shows we could still get rid of a few bodies.

Yeah, I think you're right. I guess Ballack may be the odd man out in that formation with Pirlo's probable arrival. It's hard to imagine a line-up without Lamps, Pirlo/Mikel and Malouda/Zhirkov not involved. I was trying to wedge him in to some role that gives him some likelihood of minutes given our personel. Even on the right, until he leaves for Africa, Essien is a lock.

Pirlo and someone like Ballack would destroy our chances of winning, IMO. That pair are too slow to cover the right side together. Bosingwa might even get so pissed covering for those two he takes off his mittens if that happens. But a Mikel/Essien and Ballack team would be okay. Edited August 1, 200915 yr by ChelseaYankee
August 3, 200915 yr I'm particularly looking forward to the Sturridge---Sturridge partnership. I can see them building up an almost telepathic understanding. I knew we'd employed that dodgy Russian cloning expert for a reason.
August 4, 200915 yr Oh my gosh fester you're such an idiot. There's no way tha......OHHHH I...Ahahahaha...I see what you did there.
August 4, 200915 yr I don't think we'll see Pirlo in a chelsea uniform this season with the new 30m price tag put on him. August 4, 200915 yr The knock on Pirlo from many Milan fans is that he isnt a defensive midfielder per se, but that he needs someone alongside him in the middle to put in the tackling work, and winning the ball back for him. Im not saying that is completely accurate, but I know he was never better than when Gattuso was still a force in midfield, and a regular starter in Milan.

I have heard the same thing and seen it said several times in these forum. Its pace the team needs. Any rate Pirlo will certainly mean no place for the German captain, and one of Essien/Mikel will miss out, not to mention playing Lampard out of position. All we need to do is forget Pirlo and brink Aguero in at the top of the diamond (he does play there doesn't he?), then its Lampard, Essien and Ballack/Mikel in the other spots and its starting to look like a team.

Forgetting Pirlo ain't gonna happen. He's coming whether people like it or not. Methinks there's someone else in the pipeline too and it'll be the tip of the diamond player. And before anyone asks, no that's not from my 'source' that's just my opinion.
