Wasnt sure where to post this but here goes.

After my gig last night i got chatting to a group of lads ive knoen for years , even went to school with. We dont get to see each other that much but we make the most of occasions such as a big football night & last nights play off was the perfect opportunity to have a natter on footie. We discussed the France game , all very disappointed with the result but lets be honest , Crappitoni got it very wrong but im not going into that .

As the conversation progressed i did happen to mention that Rep of Ireland were never my priority when it came to football and Chelsea would always be my immediate interest and i would never put any other team , Rep of Ireland included , before them them. Didnt go down too well.

So i was posed a question that caused a f**kin row with myself and one guy.

Which would i consider my most important priority , which would i get most enjoyment out of and give me the greatest enjoyment .

Rep of Ireland winning the World cup / Euros , or Chelsea winning another Premiership and the Champions League in the same season ?

Well it wasnt an answer i had to think about , Chelsea adding to the trophy cabinet of course . Purely because i have always had more passion for C.F.C than Rep of Ireland , and by saying that i mean no disrespect to the Irish national team or their fans but i cant change the way i feel about a club i grew up with . I never really went to Rep of Ireland games through the years , yes i did the usual celebrating in 1988 , 1990 , and 1994 , but i was always looking out for news of Chelsea . Summer of 1990 was a fantastic time in this counrty and i have great memories of Italia 90 , the piss ups before and after the games, that England game, the crap W.C. songs , busy bars and clubs and the Acid house music explosion , all incidents i look back on with affection , wonderful times and the entire country exploded . It was also a time where nobody really gave a f**k which team you supported , it was Ireland in the Euros and the W.C. and we loved every miniute of it .

When it all went tits up i wasnt too disappointed , yes it was a fun time that came to an end and i still enjoyed watching Rep of Ireland through qualyfing groups but i was spending my money on Chelsea games in the 90s because i had more interest in my club rather than my country , maybe thats wrong in some peoples eyes but for me it was my choice , a choice i made because i loved Chelsea more than any other football team , including Ireland , a choice i had no control over .

Last night i had to listen to abuse from a few lads who couldnt understand my passion[i stood my ground ] , guys who i do believe are genuine Rep of Ireland fans , travel everywhere supporting them but werent prepared to understand or even consider my call on Chelsea.

The way i feel before a Chelsea game is nothing compared to an Ireland game , I dont get the nerves, the butterflies, the anxious tension or the buzz but trying to explain that last night was impossible .

I was accused of not being a true Irishman , [total b***ocks] , and i should be ashamed of myself for putting a British club before my country . I didnt put a British club before my counrty , the geographic location of Chelsea when i was 10 years old meant f**k all to me and i wasnt old enough to even know where SW6 was , it was Osgood & co and i was havin a bit of it .

Whatever happened between then and now was completely out of my control , all i will say is , i have a deep love for the club ive supported since i was a kid , Chelsea will always be a priority with myself , my wife and my two children , any drunken p**ck who challenges my support will get the same answer .

Apologise to any Rep of Ireland fans here , no insult meant , a fantastic group of supporters who have done this counrty very proud.

I think that one of the reasons I'd say the Chelsea answer would be mine too is that you associate with them more often, so you are constantly being excited by matches week in week out. One week you've got an "easy" home game, the next week you're playing a major rival, and in between you are playing some minnow team in a cup competition.

Certainly, it is great to see your home country doing well, and the Republic of Ireland certainly have more going for them than my Scotland do. Whenever Scotland play, I'll watch, but I'm not going out of my way to find out about each and every player and their performances for their repsective club teams. If we do well, it's great, but lets be honest, it's a bit of a side-note. The games are only played every now and again, and often (as is the case with JT and Lampard) your team players can come back injured from them.

I'd love to see Scotland do well again, and I dream of the day a Scottish player is in the Chelsea ranks again. But i'm tied to Chelsea every week, every year. So they hold more importance to me, and therefore I want to see them achieve the most.

Chelsea first but I always want England to do well and I imagine a lot of people feel the same, which could be down to the reasons previously stated or could be due to national pride and identity being at an all time low.

I rate Chelsea higher than Norway. Off course I follow Norway and attend matches at Ullevaal. But apart from the '98 WC when we beat Brazil 2-1 (Thore Andre Flo scored our first and then got us a penalty), there's not been that many ups after that. Truth be told, the whole 2008 went by without Norway winning a single game under Ã…ge Hareide.

I have somewhat renewed optimism now that Egil Olsen is back in charge for the EC and Ståle Solbakken (now at FC Copenhagen) is supposed to take over after the EC. But my love for Chelsea is so much stronger than Norway or my local team Sandefjord. I have pride in being a norwegian, but the odd norwegian is not a passionate about the norwegian team as britains are about England. Yes, I go to Ullevaal wearing my shirt and sing and shout and will continue to do so. But it just can't compare with traveling to London, going to So Bar and standing in the MHL shouting.

"We are the best in the world! We are the best in the world! We have beaten England 2-1 in football!! It is completely unbelievable! We have beaten England! England, birthplace of giants. Lord Nelson, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Anthony Eden, Clement Attlee, Henry Cooper, Lady Diana--we have beaten them all. We have beaten them all. Maggie Thatcher can you hear me? Maggie Thatcher, I have a message for you in the middle of the election campaign. I have a message for you: We have knocked England out of the football World Cup. Maggie Thatcher, as they say in your language in the boxing bars around Madison Square Garden in New York: Your boys took a hell of a beating! Your boys took a hell of a beating!"

Bjørge Lillelien when Norway beat England 2-1 at Ullevaal in 1981.

Not something I have to think long or hard about: Chelsea all the way. My national team? Wayyyyyyy down the list!

I used to be England first I have to admit couldnt undertand how players put their club before country, but I have changed in say the last 10 years. mostly because I think our FA cannot run a piss up in a brewery.

One thing that gets on my wick more than anything is they go on about grass roots all the time when they are the ones responsibile for it as far as I am concerned

club before country every time. i was actually glad when england lost to brazil. so much for wayne rooney's so-called leadership qualities.

1. Northern Ireland winning (or even qualifying for) a major tournament

2. Rangers winning champions league

3. Chelsea winning champions league

Always country before club for me. Even though we have come up short on the last couple of occassions, the national team have done us incredibly proud in recent years

I have been a Chelsea fan for about 14 years but a Gers fan for longer. My da is a Gers fan and doesn't really follow anyone else so that was my 1st experience of football - jumping on the Stena Line to Stranraer and up to Ibrox for the match

Even though I follow Chelsea a lot more because of the exposure and quality of the premiership compared to the SPL, I think I would cry if I seen Rangers lift the biggest prize in club football

I think those Republic of Ireland fans you met last night are very much in the minority. Not a lot of people put country before club these days. Them lads will end up having a lot more arguments.

Chelsea before England for me. I dont really like being associated with a group that involves scousers and mancs.

Club before country for me as well, although I do go through very heavy phases of support for my national team, and then I'll go through other phases where I don't even care if they win or not.

It was easier when I was living abroad, because I didn't feel this intense hatred for rival clubs (except Tottenham) that I feel while I'm here. It also helped that we won the league twice out of the three years I was away. And because we had such a large variety of nationalities where I lived (Switzerland), national pride was a big thing, and so England winning became close to an obsession. However, now I'm home again, I remembered how much I hate Liverpool, Man Utd et al and I find it very hard to like a team which is filled with players like Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand. Of course, my adoration for Lamps and JT (and the Coles) overrides that, but I'm still disappointed when Gerrard or Rooney scores for England, and not one of the players I love.

Of course, my support for Chelsea has never faded, and has done nothing but grow stronger since I can remember.

Interesting.

Tough one, is that.

Your club can win a league or CL title any season but the WC and Euros (to a lesser extent) come along once every four years.

But then, I can understand why folks would rather see their clubs winning honours every season, cos that's who you follow week in, week out.

Club over country every time!

How can any self-respecting Chelsea fan suddenly begin to cheer on the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Ferdinand & Defoe?

I've spent almost my whole life hating Tottenham, Septic, Arsenal, Leeds, West Ham, Aberdeen, Man.Utd, & more recently, Liverpool, and there's no way on earth I could ever bring myself to wish any player from any of those clubs well just because they pulled on an international jersey.

I'll second that

Cheering for Shrek, Plug, that cheating c**t Gerrard or Wes Orange and the rest would make me gag

Yep club over country for me as well although I would probably give a little by saying that my order of preference would be

1. Chelsea - Premiership

2. Chelsea - Champions League

3. England - World Cup

4. Chelsea - FA Cup

5. England - Euros

6. Chelsea - LEague Cup

Club is always over country for me. Wales are always a disappointment in any competition, so all hope was lost on them winning anything since I was about 5.

Loz, you'd rather see Rooney, Ferdinand, Brown, Gerrard & Defoe getting their grubby little hands on the World Cup than see Chelsea win the FA Cup??? :o

The only good thing about that scenario is that JT would be the one receiving the World Cup, while Joey and Ashley would tie in first place to get Player of the Tournament, with Lamps getting the Golden Boot - f*ck the rest of 'em! ;)

Personally of course, I'd much rather see Scotland win the World Cup, but obviously only if there were no Septic or Aberdeen players in the side. Still, thanks to Burley I've got to wait another four and a half years before I begin to worry about that.

I've always put club before country. As much as I love to see england win, and would love to win the world Cup, I'd rather see chelsea win the Premiership.

Cough, cough! Didn't Wales beat Scotland 3-0 the other day? ;)

I like how Loz put an order of preference down... I think I'll follow suit.

1. Chelsea - Premiership

1A. Chelsea - Champions League (oh the joy to win this and shut EVERYONE, outside of us loyal Cheslea fans, up)

3. Germany - World Cup

4. Germany - Euros (the loss to Spain last year was brutal)

5. Chelsea - FA Cup

6. Chelsea - League Cup

Before anyone asks... Yes, I'm from the US, but my heritage is German and so I root for the German squad. I do though want to see the US national team do well so more Americans get into it.

Can't believe any genuine Chelsea fan could ever put their country first.

For me it's Chelsea way, way ahead of England. Of course I like England to win but I'm not upset if they don't.

For over 40 years I've followed Chelsea passionately and that has meant investing a huge amount of time, money and above all emotion into my obsession. To quote Thomas Hardy, that has been an occasional moment of pleasure in a general drama of pain, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Chelsea will always be first to me but i do also care a lot about England's results. I started following them both from five years of age and have a stronger affiliation with Chelsea because of the regularity of the games. Reading through a liverpool forum where they were talking about this same thing and the majority actually wanted their own country to lose, couldn't believe what i was reading, espicially considering liverpool are not on the brink of winning anything so you would think they would take any success they could get

I try to go to as many Ireland games as i can but if im honest i hate international weekends find them boring. it chelsea always without sounding selfish when chelsea win its my own little buzz at Ireland winng does not do that for me at all.

I think you'll find a lot of people from Liverpool, regardless of what football team they support, do not like the England team. They consider themselves scousers, and not English.
