at the time it happened the first reaction of a lot of people was that it needed to be said. Then, within 15 minutes, a positive had been turned into a negative and it was portrayed as an attempted coup.

By the Daily Heil I seem to remember. I've asked this before: why the hell does JT give them the time of day? They just don't deserve it.

Great article. So surprised that this has been printed by The Daily Fail.

Some funny bits as well........

People who don’t know me, old ladies in the supermarket, often say they thought I would be more aggressive. They’re surprised if I’m nice. I don’t know what they think I’m going to do. Hit them with a two-footed tackle in the fruit and veg aisle, maybe.’

Classic :laugh2:

Quite refreshing that the comments below the article are supportive. Although it's still early days, I'll check it again this evening.

Agreed on the paper, but I am glad he was talking to Martin Samuel. He, Holt and Winter were the only three I recall not calling for JT to be drawn and quartered during the world cup.

‘Yes, maybe I could have been a little more sensitive. The impression I got was that people were asking, “Who does he think he is?†but at the time it happened the first reaction of a lot of people was that it needed to be said. Then, within 15 minutes, a positive had been turned into a negative and it was portrayed as an attempted coup.

Everytime this subject comes up when I am discussing football, I point this out and nobody has a response for it. The about face in the press over that incident took place in all of 36 hours. He went from being lauded as an honest guy and a breath of fresh air to villified for leading a "coup" (as if the england team are a latin american republic). If that was a coup, then he would make just about the worst revolutionary ever, because he didnt actually say anything of note

it went from a positive to a coup cos gerrard got the hump and moaned to his mates in the press that JT was stealing his thunder...it's well known that the two don't like each other whatever they may say otherwise in public
