Eton Blue at the Chelsea Megastore

I was looking through the usual CFC twitter sites over the weekend and i occasionally look at the old skool away days site which i think CB maybe connected to.Well imagine my surprise and amazement  when a picture was posted on there connected to Sunderland away March 30 1985 . This was a slightly obscure  game as it came after the notorious semi final home and away games we had with them that year. The upshot of both those games was when we had Sunderland away in the league CFC fans were banned .

While I did the home game in the milk cup against them for some reason which i cant remember i didnt do the away game but i know it was a battle outside after the full time whistle. So for the away league i was up for going and sod the ban. I do remember  3 of us went form Guildford to Waterloo and then across town to Euston  but i think after a drink at Euston 2 couldn't be arsed so i went on my own. The train had a small scattering of CFC on it but nothing like the usual hordes and no usual faces.  Maybe it was the lack of large groups that enabled those on board to get to Sunderland mainline without being turned back  .  I seem to recall the small group of us got escorted by plod and held for a good while outside the mainline station or if i recall some other small train station (could that be right ?)

Anyway we all got in and it was one of ,if not the smallest away day crowds i have ever been in .We won the game 2-0 ,the players came over at the end and gave is a good round of a applause and we then got a full escort back to the station . Oddly it has always been one of my favorite away games for just going and getting in.

So seeing the picture posted on the twitter link of the crowd brought a big smile to face and with only a 100 or so there ,99.99% of whom are in the picture! So it was easy to spot the good looking bloke in the black jacket (and dodgy haircut i know) standing middle left at about quarter to 9 , in front of the crash barrier

Beating Spuds 3-2 on 22nd Dec 1971 at The Bridge. League Cup Semi Final.

Yeah it can't be the picture on the previous page that I thought was from this game

The old Main Stand was still standing and in use when this game took place.

The goals

Ossie pushing the defender in the back before getting the 1-2 off the keeper

Great home strip.

Can't agree with that at all Ersk the big massive yellow Bates/ Millwall badge !. As for that hideous away kit a mate of mine RIP big Chelsea fan used to be a barrow boy in Berwick Street Market in Soho. He was always getting hold of dodgy gear he came in the pub one night saying he was offered a load of Chelsea away shirts for a tenner but said no because he didn't think anyone would buy them ha ha.

All the kids at the front, as it was normal in those days to pass them down from the back.

Easier back then because they’re weren’t many tubby kids- rationing continued well into the 50’s.

If you tried to pass the modern, fizzy drink/ fried chicken generation over your head you’d be likely to put your back out.

For a 20 year period I never bought any merchandise with that badge on.

Luckily a mate on mine was in the print game, and during that spell run off rampant lion car stickers and a few other bits which kept everyone happy.

Graham Wilkins - not sure if he was as awful as some say, or partly suffered the burden of being Butch's brother, poor bloke didn't even have a decent nickname!  Brian Mears mentions in his autobiography that Graham had to have a police escort from the ground after scoring a late own goal v West Ham.
