Is chanting 'Fat SPANISH waiter' xenophobic?

What must Mata, Torres, Azpilicueta and Romeu (our Spaniards) think when they hear that? That when Chelsea fans hate someone their nationality is brought into it? Why is the Spanish part included in the insult? If a Spanish team had a few English players and an English manager the fans hated, and they chanted 'Fat ENGLISH XYZ', surely those English players wouldn't like it?

As far as I understood, the 'spanish waiter' put down originated when Spaniards first started to come to England for jobs when they joined the EU, but all they could get were menial jobs like waiters, no matter how educated. As illustrated by Manuel in Fawlty Towers comedy programme. The insult started because of discrimination by English people against Spaniards. This makes me very uncomfortable, anyone else?

What did Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina and Alvaro Arbeloa think when the nickname was originally bestowed on him at Liverpool? Who cares? Fat Waiter doesn't have the same ring to it. Fat Spanish Waiter just rolls off the tongue, it's appropriately venomous for a c**t like Benitez and it's something people recognize. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is that the Fat Spanish Waiter in question is still, as of the 7th day in January, managing Chelsea FC.

No it doesn't and no it's not. Fat Dago Waiter would be, as would Fat Spic Waiter. But Spanish? Nope. He's fat, he looks like a waiter and he's Spanish. And it scans nicely.

Furthermore, there has never been any significant level of anti-Spanish feeling in the UK. Not in my lifetime anyway. Maybe back in the days of the Spanish Armada . But in Premiership terms, even in Liverpool FC terms, when you talk Franny Drake playing bowls for Ye Olde Plymouth Argyle BC prior to driving the dastardly Spanish out of the water, you're talking the footballing equivalent of pre-history.  There has never once been a terrace chant of "You Spanish bar steward".

Interestingly, when Fawlty Towers was shown in Spain, they took offence at Manual being portrayed as from Barcelona, and so the translation was amended to "I'm from Milan", I think it was. Touchy lot those Spanish.

Did I say touchy? How Spanishist of me.

As a part time waiter at the coffee club, i can confirm that i am deeply offended by these chants.

Is a part-time waiter the same as an INTERIM waiter?

Am I being Interimist now?

As a fat bar steward (i was born out of wedlock!) myself, There is no way i can complain if someone calls me on it. If i started shovelling carrots instead of cake and grazing on salad instead of fried stuff, then maybe i good be fussy if people still call me fat. As it is, i only have myself to blame. i am fat -Fact. The interim is fat - fact.

As an Englishman, if somebody calls me a pom, or any other name linked to british people (for which i can think of none at this time - any help?) - i can in no way be offended. I am English  - Fact

If somebody called me a waiter, it would be no worse than being called a lazy civil servant, which is what i am. In the case of the interim, being called a waiter is no worse than being called a joke of a football manager, which is what he is - Fact.

It's not xenophobic because the 'Spanish' part isn't meant to be offensive, it's just a funny name people call him because he does indeed look like a Fat Spanish Waiter. I don't think it's particular fatist (though the shouts from the stands calling him a 'fat c**t' etc are) and it's certainly not racist.

Am surprised by some of the answers above. Some people above have mentioned racist?? I don't recall you mentioning racist, just xenophobic. Some can't seperate the wood from the trees due to their blind hatred. I tried to put myself in a scenario where I'm an Englishman working abroad and fans of the club I managed called me a perfectly formed English c**t and how my fellow Englishmen would feel based on the English bit, would they support me and dislike this reference. personally I wouldn't want to do anything to upset Mata, Azpilicueta et al. Whether or not they take offence to it personally, who knows??

I think you may have a point.  Imagine if the manager was a fat Pakistani and everyone started referring to him as a 'Fat Pakistani Corner Shop Owner'.  Would that be tolerated?  Unlikely.  But as we all know, xenophobia is fine if it is directed at a fellow European country where the indigenous population are white.  The tabloids have dictated that.  "Let's beat the dirty, garlic eating Frogs!" "The Krauts are humourless deckchair stealers!" etc.  Then they take the moral high ground with Terry and Suarez.
