Aberdeens Doug Rougvie and Real Madrids Juanito - 1983 European Cup Winners Cup Final

Big Doug and Juanito of Real Madrid during the  European Cup Winners Cup Final. 11th May 1983.

Aberdeen won 2-1 after extra time. Still an amazing story!

Remember watching the game and it was a great achievement by Aberdeen. A very good side. Have to admit that Ferguson did a good job at Aberdeen. I think that it was either earlier this year or late last year that a statue of him was erected outside of Pittodrie.

Probably goes under the radar. He was a very good assistant manager to Ferguson and also to Walter Smith.

Read yesterday that the Aberdeen side that won in Gothenburg had never played together before that night.

It only played as a side again once. In the 1983 Scottish Cup Final v Rangers shortly afterwards.

Great picture. Cantwell has got off to a great start and is popular with Rangers fans.

Saw his debut at Ibrox in January.

Looks a really good midfield player. Makes intelligent passes and has the ability to time a run from deep, to great effect.

The warning signs for Ally McLeod were there in this match v Northern Ireland.

They played without a recognised left back in this match. Yet Willie Donachie was suspended for the opening World Cup game v Peru, yet another left back wasn’t taken.

The left side of Donnachie, Asa Hartford and Willie Donachie had worked to great effect as a left sided ‘unit’ in the matches played in 1977.

Donachie and Hartford played together at Man City and took their understanding into the international side.

Just one of the baffling decisions, that were made.

A Rangers and Scotland great.

Eric Caldow.jpg

My old man really rated Eric Caldow.

He was ahead of his time. Very pacey, had a great left foot. Could tackle and read a game. Eric Caldow that is, not my old man😀

After the game between Scotland and England at Hampden Park in 1976.

Archie Gemmill 1976.jpg

The very underrated Scotland manager Willie Ormand with Archie Gemmil.

Remember watching this game in my grandparents house.

The whole street seemed to erupt with noise, when Scotland scored both their goals and also at the Final Whistle.

My grandfather had ‘a few Guinnesses’ before, during and after the match😀

Had a great record for saving penalties at his peak. Never capped by England.

Willie Ormond was a great manager.

Here's highlights from the 1976. A howler by Clemence for Scotland's second goal and a great tackle by Jaws on Channon. Jaws was alongside his Rangers central defensive partner  Bomber in the game.

Boyne: Cheers for the footage. Forsyth and Jackson were a very good central defensive partnership and in 1974/75 and 1975/76 were very probably at their peak individually and as a unit.

Remember Mick Channon playing for Southampton in a pre season four team tournament at Ibroxi in early August 1976.

Tom Forsyth tackled him in typical fashion. Channon got up, eventually, then moaned away at the ref and linesman.

The Rangers support starting singing “Channon’s in the huff, Channon’s in the huff!”

To be fair, Channon stopped, put his hands up in the air, waved to the crowd and laughed .
