Still an amazing story! Remember watching the game and it was a great achievement by Aberdeen. A very good side. Have to admit that Ferguson did a good job at Aberdeen. I think that it was either earlier this year or late last year that a statue of him was erected outside of Pittodrie. erskblue

He was a very good assistant manager to Ferguson and also to Walter Smith. Read yesterday that the Aberdeen side that won in Gothenburg had never played together before that night. It only played as a side again once. In the 1983 Scottish Cup Final v Rangers shortly afterwards. Looks a really good midfield player. Makes intelligent passes and has the ability to time a run from deep, to great effect. They played without a recognised left back in this match. Yet Willie Donachie was suspended for the opening World Cup game v Peru, yet another left back wasn’t taken. The left side of Donnachie, Asa Hartford and Willie Donachie had worked to great effect as a left sided ‘unit’ in the matches played in 1977. Donachie and Hartford played together at Man City and took their understanding into the international side. Just one of the baffling decisions, that were made. A howler by Clemence for Scotland's second goal and a great tackle by Jaws on Channon. Forsyth and Jackson were a very good central defensive partnership and in 1974/75 and 1975/76 were very probably at their peak individually and as a unit. Remember Mick Channon playing for Southampton in a pre season four team tournament at Ibroxi in early August 1976. Tom Forsyth tackled him in typical fashion. Channon got up, eventually, then moaned away at the ref and linesman. The Rangers support starting singing “Channon’s in the huff, Channon’s in the huff!” To be fair, Channon stopped, put his hands up in the air, waved to the crowd and laughed .
