Michel Platini scores for France against Portugal.

Michel Platini after scoring for France against Portugal in the Euro 84 Semi Final.

France won 3-2 in an amazing Semi Final.

Yet only the highlights of this match were shown on bbc later that evening

. I remember being through in Edinburgh that weekend and watching the highlights of this match with two of my cousins and my late Uncle.

Only a West Germany v Spain Group Match and the Final itself were shown live on tv during this tournament.

Everything else was merely match highlights. Incredible then, unbelievable now!!

Redevelopment of Ibrox

Ibroz Redevelopment 2.jpg

Boyne: That top picture looks like the very early stages of the removal of the Copland Road Terracing.

The barriers look as if they have just been removed. June or early July 1978 I’d say.

Boyne: Think you’ll appreciate these three pictures!😀

Top picture above shows Rangers v Stirling Albion in I think 1971/72.

Above picture shows Wee Pat playing for Scotland v Malta at Ibrox in 1993.

This one above is early 1971/72 or early 1972/73.

From memory there were roughly about 5000 Rangers season ticket holders in the early 1980s.

The number increased dramatically in 1986/87, then rose again in 1987/88.

Gates in the early to mid-eighties were low but then a lot of clubs suffered from low attendances. I can't remember how many Chelsea ST holders there were in the mid-eighties. The appointment of Souness in April 1986 certainly made a difference. The impact on football in Scottish and to an extent the rest of the U,K. was immense. I remember the celebrations when Rangers won the title in 1987.

Souness arrival in April 1986 ‘kick started’ Rangers. He attracted Chris Woods and Terry Butcher with his own reputation and the fact the English clubs were banned from European Football. The support reacted by returning in big numbers in 1986/87.
They won the League in 1986/87, their first since 1977/78. And built on the success and the fans bough5 into it by returning in numbers.

Saw a photo recently of a season ticket for The Bridge. West Stand for season 1974/75. Cost was £20.00

The cost for standing at The Bridge in 1980/81 was £2.00, whilst a seat cost £3.00. The price of a season ticket for the Stands in the 1980/81 season was £50.
£1 in 1980 is approximately £4.50 in todays terms. Perhaps slightly more.

Rangers admission prices back then.

I’m sure it cost £1.00 for Under 16s ( or possible Under 18s ) for the Copland Road and Broomloan Road in 1980/81 and 70p or 80p for the East / West Standing Enclosures in the Main Stand. Might well be wrong!😀
