I am thinking it's the latter explanation and Roma does need to refresh its defense which is its weakest part of the team.

Rudiger replaces Ake?  Yes, I believe so.  But certainly not good enough to replace even Cahill in the first team.

That is my problem with the transfer; we are not improving our 1st 11. Considering we were rumoured to have tried for Koulibaly, VVD & Bonucci, are we settling for a 4th CB? Paying £30m+ for depth is just strange considering you don’t normally change your CB barring injuries.

Exactly. Just dont understand why you would pay that some and also sell Ake who atleast was HG

Mirror saying Citeh to Gazzump us for him, dear me can we not cobble together one signing......

Do people still really read Redtops..

I remember in the mid 90's I had a morning paper round, so i'd get up at 5 am, papers on my door step, arrange them in order of delivery and obviously read the back pages scanning or Chelsea news.

Players that we had in the bag: Gaza, le tissier, Dahlin, Brolin, Radachoia  to name 4 high prole at the time and sure enough i'd run in to school talking about these signings that were going to take us to the top...

Red tops need to print news, and mostly football at the back if they had to stick to the solid stories the football part of the sports section would be one page max at this time.

Probably not the paper versions, but like everything else these days it's all accessible online.

This one is in the bag. Wouldn't have been my choice personally. I've seen him a few times, and he has been solid but not spectacular. What are the chances of him playing right wing back? It would certainly help with the Courtois's out ball. Bakayoko, Rudiger, Lukaku, would all indicate a change in policy from trying to play like barca with small technical players. We will be a powerful team next season, just hope we have enough finesse in the attacking 3rd. Hopefully Sandro will help in that respect, although I would love to see another top attacking midfielder/winger to compliment hazard.

I agree not an enormous improvement but rudiger offers us something different, bigger and more athletic than Garry, I think he will take his place if he starts to find form.

I don't think many people have watched him, he is only 24 blew out his ACL, he is a German international at a young age, he has potential to be a top class CB.

If we keep him fit give him game time for a year he could be very very good, next season. I think that's the thought behind this buy gives cover to at least as good and I'd say better than Garry, can play in any position in the back 3, and has potential to gain momentum after his injury and become a top CB.

It's a clever buy and allows us to pay whatever they want for Sandro, I'd rather have Sandro and rudiger than say VVD or Koulibaly and telles and tbh we might still go in for a big CB, but wing back is a more impacting position in this system.

Garry in a back 4 would get ripped sideways by tricky forwards but with luiz sweeping up, Dave beside him and Kante in front all you need is discipline and consistency and Garry has that, Sandro would improve us greatly and make that left side devastating.

Ideally a top CB will come in if not this and Sandro would do nicely, this and telles however and we are just not being ambitious enough in getting our targets.

Pay whatever they want?  I highly doubt that although if there really is a 60 million pound bid made, that would be a step forward although it's the end result of securing a big name transfer that really counts.  Just trying isn't good enough.

Within the norms not a billion pounds...if they were ok'd 55 for Sandro and 55 for VVD they spend 30 on rudiger they can justify paying more for Sandro they aren't going to ask more than that difference

That's ok if your Everton it's a pretty good business model really but for a team of chelseas size we should just pay the extra few mil and get the players we actually want as some people have reported we have made 100-120 mil from selling deadwood then when you factor in the revenue we receive from other sources we should be able to splash out on two or three top class signings rather than buy seventeen babas and salahs and hope one becomes world class :/

I don't disagree I say pay all I'm saying is if they are going to penny pinch and this signing means Sandro I'll take it

If we get the ones we are reported to be after its a fair wedge

Rudiger 35 million

Baka 40 million

Sandro 60 million

Lukaku 60 million

Nearly 200 million there.

Of course we would be looking at Costa leaving for around 25 to 35 million. With Ake bringing in 20 million while we have the Oscar money from last season plus the various other departures and revenue it's not like we shouldn't be capable of bringing in a few more

Rudiger will cost us less then 29mln. pounds. The total sum is 33mln. euro + eventually 5mln. in bonuses.

Bakayoko will be 35mln. pounds.

I expect Sandro transfer to not happen and he will stay at Juventus.

Lukaku will worth arround 70mln. pounds

And we won`t sell Costa for anything less then 40mln. pounds. That`s for sure.

We have more then 130mln. pounds from winter till now from selling players and there are a lot more to be sold. So i expect we get +200mln. from outgoing transfer.

For me the most interesting aspect of this transfer is what it tells us about the team Conte is trying to build.

Last season he brought in Batshuayi, Alonso, Luiz and Kante. This season it seems he's going to build the team more in his own image, with quick, athletic, raw, pacy and strong players, all of a certain age, that magic spot in your mid 20s when you're yet to hit your peak, when you still have a lot to prove and you're motivated, when you should in theory be giving your team the best years of your life.

Rudiger, like Lukaku, has just turned 24. Bakayoko will be 23 next month, Sandro is 26. They're all tall and they're all imposing athletic creatures. Nobody's going to bully us, nobody's going to dominate us in the air and nobody's going to outpace us. I know there is some debate over Lukaku but these are all technical players too, these are all top-level performers, who perform on the international stage and, with the exception of Lukaku, the CL stage.

I think many are underestimating Rudiger on this thread. This guy was a full German international at the age of 20 and he remains a regular in the German squad. Considering he's just turned 24, considering he had a bad injury last summer, considering Germany are the world champions, 16 caps isn't bad. Those saying he isn't an upgrade on Ake need to consider this guy has nearly 200 club appearances to his name, whereas Ake has just over 50. That's not to say Ake won't turn into a top player, he's clearly a good player and he's doing very well for his age, even though it's worth considering he's only 2 years younger than Rudiger. One thing's for sure, Ake will never have Rudiger's pace nor his height, although he does match him for versatility.

That's the other interesting thing about this transfer, the fact Rudiger gives us options in a number of positions, as he can play anywhere along the defence. I'm sure Conte already knows where he ideally wants him to play however, be that at FB, WB or CB. It's possible Conte sticks with the 3 man defence, plays Rudiger on the right of the 3, and plays Azpilicueta as the RWB instead of Moses. Either way, it seems Conte has identified an area of the team that needs strengthening, and he's identified Rudiger as the man to strengthen it. Rudiger may not be a beast, in the mould of a Koulibaly or whoever, he may not be the world's best defender, but he's still a top player playing at the top level, with bags of experience for one so young. We'll be challenging for the CL as well as the PL this season and with that in mind, Rudiger's presence gives us a far better chance than Ake's presence would have done, and that's why Conte's made a pragmatic choice.

Truth is, it's hard for a young player to break through at Chelsea, as we all know. Kids have to play or their development is stifled. Conte has to decide if he can give that kid enough minutes. He decided the answer was no in Ake's case, and sad as it may be, that made it the right decision to sell him. He's had his loans, he's 22, this was the time for the manager to make his decision and he made it. He's seen the player and he's made his judgement. Chelsea play at a very high level and the manager's no mug. As a youngster you're going to have to be very special indeed to break through. Rudiger simply plays at a higher level. That may not be the case in a season or two but that's the case now, and Ake will be forever stifled if he stays at Chelsea, so it was the best thing for all parties. Don't forget Christensen's back too, and if he's as good as they say he is, he's going to need minutes as well, otherwise we'll lose him. Then there's Zouma, who may or may not go out on loan. His chances have definitely diminished with Rudiger's arrival and maybe it's time for him to consider his future too. Either way we have to make room to accomodate these players and that means we have to make sacrifices too. The manager gets paid the big bucks to make these calls. The top managers get these calls right more often than not. That's what makes them top managers.

Sure, Rudiger may not have been Conte's first choice but maybe his first choice wasn't available, or maybe the club weren't prepared to be held to ransom, which is fair enough. You never know, maybe another CB is going to come in. Maybe Conte has plans to play Rudiger at WB. Either way I think he represents good value, I think he'll make us stronger, I think he'll develop under Conte, and I think he's likely to prove a good signing.

Edit: I'm happy with this piece of business and I think you should all be too.

Just made a brilliant and vital tackle in the box...he's playing on the left of a back three interestingly...

Would take Gary's spot immediately. We'd have so versatile back-3 who could build the game from Courtois or make a long pass.

First thing I noticed, which bodes well if we do sign him. Commentator mentioned he has played in a 3 and a standard back 4 for Roma, at left CB. He's played well so far, very encouraging.

Out of all of Germany's defenders, i think he has looked the most comfortable.
