He's decent and yes he won our player of the season last season but he isn't our best player.

He has to compete for his place just like everyone else (although Mendy, Silva and Chilwell are pretty much nailed on starters!)

How is he not when he was the best player last season?

The same way Willian once got player of the year but he was never as good as Hazard.

Nice revision of history there... If he got the award how can you claim that someone else was better? Makes no sense, Willian was not only our best player by players and fans but he was also in the best team of the CL group stage that same season, he scored more goals than Hazard that year anyway...

He's quality, always was. It's funny how many fans didn't even mention him in their lineups for this season and the media also prefers to ask Frank about the Van Dijk injury rather than asking why Kova wasn't even in the squad last match. It feels as if people just forget about him, don't know why though.

Its player of the season though.... not best player at your club award. You can have a better season than someone who is a better player than you. Its hard to say Kovacic is our best player at the club but he was our best player last season.

Yes i know i remember that season. Willian got made out to be better than he was because of his freekicks and Hazard got made to out to be worse than he was playing because of his lack of goals. Willian got 5 goals in the league that season, Hazard got 4.

So who is the best player in the club if not Kovacic?

Just because a player gets voted POTS, it might be a good accolade but it doesn't mean they are the best player. Shows they played well over a season and might be a vote for other attributes like, tries hard and always gives 100% but doesn't mean they are the "best".

You are only as good as your last game and that was last season. He's still a valuable squad player and I'm sure he will get many games to show his worth but like most of our outfield players, he is not an automatic starter.

By the standards of which Kovacic was the best player last season, adding that he's still playing on the same level, he's still our best player.

Unless someone else stepped up recently he still is our best player. Now you can argue that the difference in quality of Mendy, Chilwell or T.Silva is very obvious and that one of them might be our best player right now, but by that our standard changed because Kovacic isn't playing worse than last season.

You're going way too far into this and you're tying yourself up in knots!

Kovacic is a good player but he isn't our "Best" player. Do you seriously think Lamps would keep leaving him out if he thought he was our best player?

People said he just recently became a father.

He did indeed. I’m a big fan so disappointed to see him left out. I think its futile arguing about who the best player is. What’s relevant to me is he looks like our best midfielder at the moment. Best at keeping the ball, best at moving it quickly, best at moving with it. He seemed a bit out of sorts earlier this season and I said so. But he’s played really well of late. Deserves to start imo.

Sadly this is the fickle nature of football and the fans these days. Like kids that get a Christmas present and are all excited about it, but a year later when new, more expensive toys come along the ones from the year before are relegated to the bottom of the pile. Sometimes they go on to discover the old toys were better.

We should improve and we do have new players that make our team better that's for sure...

But that doesn't mean that we should stop doing what has been working and Kovacic+Jorginho was a good partnership last season. I dislike that now people are thinking that we are such a bad team that we must replace basically everybody, that's really over the top, we finished top 3 and top 4 in the last 2 seasons so we clearly have something that works in the team! And I dare to say that it has been our midfield that was doing well most of the time last season.

Kovacic came on with fresh legs won 6/6 duels against Sevilla that managed to keep a high tempo for most of the game, he also had made 5 tackles while Kante made none, something to think about.

I agree :). See my other post about spoilt fans.

This 100%. Not saying he should've started, but we could've absolutely used him in the match against Southampton for a bit of control and to see out the game. Yet him sitting in the stands didn't seem odd to any of the journalists in the post-match conference. I must assume the press is asking what us fans are interested in (because all they care for is clicks), so are Chelsea fans more interested about Franks opinion on Van Dijks injury than our POTS not making the squad?

Kovacic is a strange one. One on hand, at his best he is completely anti-modern football. I was watching him for Croatia and how he completely changed their control of the game vs France because he was impossible to press. He is so good at eluding the press in midfield and playing simple passes to get his teammates in a better position that modern tactics make no sense against a player like him.

But on the other hand, he is also the most 'modern' midfielder in our squad. I think that football has sharply moved away from specialists in midfield in the last 2-3 years. Kante is capable of world-class defending but is limited in attack, whereas Jorginho is capable of world-class passing, but is easily bypassed in defense. Kovacic may not be the best at either attacking or defending but he is the most all-round of the players and for that reason he needs to start every game. I can't think of any top-class contemporary midfield that relies on 'specialist' players in those roles.

We are heading towards more jack of all trades in that wingers are expected to track back, full backs are expected to attack, the front 3 ideally are interchangeable and have the same skillset of being able to create and score.
Even CBs are expected to be good on the ball these days and them being able to pick out and play an accurate long pass is going to be something seen as ideal more and more in the future.

I think midfield has been the one place where specialists have still remained (and thrived). It is not so long ago that many midfielders had dedicated defensive midfielders, deep-lying playmakers, attacking midfielders etc. - we appear to be one of the few top teams who still rely on very strict pigeonholes. The 'Makelele role' or the 'Pirlo role' is dead, teams can no longer afford to have a midfielder acting purely defensively if they can't contribute to getting a counter-attack going, or relying on a midfielder to ping passes to the wings from deep. If you need a deep-lying stopper, then you play a back three.
