@sjstandardsport: Zenit wanted a bidding war for #Paredes so they could raise the asking price. Now gone up from £36m to £44m. That's a lot to spend on someone who is going to be primarily a back-up to #Jorginho #cfc https://twitter.com/gffn/status/1086289409111150595

Should have just kept fabregas. Now we need a back up and the target we've been chasing this window has apparently agreed to go to PSG.

@Semper Fi From me skimming over stuff the last few days, he is a regista. He plays the same position as Jorginho. But he is a bit more powerful and likes to drive forward/shoot a bit more. Primarily though he picks the ball up from deep and dictates the play, with slightly more emphasis on long balls than Jorginho.

Not getting Paredes, especially at this price, would be completely fine. He’s not particularly good, and was always going to be a back up.

I also really like Mount, but the board are living in cuckoo land if they believe he a) can play the Jorginho role, b) that Mount is good enough to start most games for us next year or c) that our midfield options are so good that Mount can be the first backup for that player as our most offensive midfielder.

The lack of a functional striker has somewhat hid the fact that we lack a working midfield dynamism. Barkley is not it, he’s at best a back up for a top team due to his lack of spacial awereness. Loftus-Cheek has talent, but can’t go through 90 minutes without placing his hands on his hips at 60 min player (which is critical, given that he’s been living as a professional athlete for 4-5 years already) and looks to be about as robust as Sturridge. Kovacic has buckets of talent, but will never give us what we need in that specialist role Hamsik fulfilled for Sarri at Napoli.

I’m all for not blowing massive amounts for backups, which Paredes would have been. But the money then would need to be reinvested into the first XI. And if Higuain performs as we only can wish, finding that offensive midfield player should be very high on the priority list come summer.

“From what I'm told, Chelsea looked at Paredes, had a deal agreed in principle if they wanted to do it, but ultimately backed away before PSG came in. They are still unsure whether or not to sign a midfielder this month”. From Matt Law

I can actually understand the club not wanting to spend £40m on a back up midfielder. However it does make the decision to sell Cesc bizarre.

We should be used to strange decisions from our board by now. It was a silly decision given we now have one less creative outlet in midfield when we lack in that area as is.

I know he is not like for like but could Matador deputise Jorginho? He is out of contract come summer. Mata is more of an advanced midfielder but his passing range is great.

I know jorginho is no makelele but he still does a much better defensive job than what mata could even dream of doing.

I know nothing should be unexpected in the transfer market but the way the prices for Paredes and Barella have skyrocketed really is outrageous.  I was all for Barella when his price was rumored at some 20 odd million lower but now we are much better off using a combination of Ampadu and Kovacic in the regista role for now.

If we’re going to sign Mata, then maybe he could take Barkley’s place, but as a regista no way. Too lightweight and can’t even tackle.

In Barkley’s place though... could work.
