Grimsby 84 video (posted by Stibbs 1961)

Brilliant find Stibbs1961 great day. We were just to the left of the goal the early pitch invasion I remember everyone singing '' Not our fault'' and it wasn't we were packed in like sardines. Is my memory playing tricks were there seats in the back of that stand?.

Brilliant ,as said I have never seen that footage ,I knew it was rammed and I remember it being rammed but not sure I recall it being as bad as it looks !

I remember it being pretty good natured all day before during and after the game ,for obvious reasons celebrating an unbelievable promotion put us in a good mood ,what I can’t remember is after the game ,what I did ,I think I just got the train back at some time ,I can’t recall going on the piss locally or anything ,just headed back to London...which in hindsight seems all very dull but I think that was how it was (for me anyway )

Don’t remember the stoppage! I was at the side terrace with seats high up behind. Having seen the video vaguely remember people coming to the side terrace. So many got in paying a tenner cash on the turnstile.
cant remember the price on my ticket but it must of been around 3£ so it was a good payday for the turnstile operators! Always laugh at the official attendances for that season because they were so wrong. We had in excess of 10,000 up there that day.

Can't remember the price but it was definitely more than £3. We had tickets I think me and my mate went to get them at CFC as we worked a short tube ride away. Remember Pat Nevin missing the penalty and convinced Grimsby would equalise.

Went to said game ,and the 2nd thing that Stuck out in my mind after the 0-1 WIN sending cfc up been division 2 winners ,was fact that by time i got back to cleethorpes aka cleggy train station ( 15 min walk tops) was the lack of chelsea fans heading back to the smoke via the train since there was what i thought 7000+ cfc in the ground .

cant recall what happened after the game only that me and me mate made our way back to cleggy train station and did not Even stop off for a pint or at a chippy.

get to station no chelsea about at all ,train back to donny was due out in sometime so we went into the amussement Arcade just across from the station on the SEA front.

made our way back to train station and bumped into 6 chelsea fans from hull on the platform, then untold Grimsby came bouncing onto the train station and kicked the hell out of U.S.

they Even got onto the train to give U.S. extra .

could not Work out to this day how we managed to be the only chelsea on that station when there was so many at the game .

strange very strange

The three specials went to a station down the road from the ground. It had no roof on either platform.I remember the three specials as when we got to I think St Pancras you had to board the train with the right coloured ticket.

There were also normal trains going up to Grimsby. Ken Bates mentioned that he’d never seen so many coaches on the motorway. I did a few games by coach that season, with coaches going from the bridge and all the various supporters clubs a lot of games there were as many as 40 coaches. They used to hold everyone at the motorway exit and give a police escort to and from the ground.

After game there were a few fans on the platform throwing coins at Grimsby fans giving it large behind a fence. A copper was telling the local kids to pick the money up! All of a sudden it was raining money in a nice way with fans laughing at these kids running round picking it up!

Cheers mate. Lucky find.  Couldn’t believe it.  I think we should all go to that Twitter posting and thank the GrimsbyTown lad for posting that....and encourage him to get the match highlights up as soon as possible.  Crazy, brilliant day. Coach from Fulham Broadway, drinking all the way.  Sunny, warm day.  I remember the strong smell of fish getting off the coach in Cleethorpes.  So many of us there as usual, but no sense of trouble..apart from one scuffle on the field... it was a party atmosphere.  Memories fade...and details become blurry.  I was behind the goal..but no idea if I was to the left or right. I remember the pen miss vaguely, but I couldn’t tell you how we scored....unlike the following game at Highbury.  I do remember the crush and the sheer bloody ecstasy.  Great times. The greatest.  I count those seasons...83/84 and the ones before and after...as the best ever, for different reasons, and the memories I have are some of the best in my life.  I moved abroad a few years after and follow the Blues (as religiously)from a distance.  I get to go to a couple of games now and again with my lads, and we always go to the summer friendlies if Chels come to the East Coast. Big thanks to the lads who started this thread and continue to keep it alive.     #COYB #carefree #this threadi

We drove up. Managed to find a pub garden to knock a few back. Did have a picture of us but it perished in my shed. Hot and packed in the end, but the rest of the ground wasn’t full if I remember right.

A mate came with us who was more into playing than watching- he ended up turning pro- whenever I see him he mentions what a good craic that day was.

Another mate that still goes mentioned in the car he’d met a decent bird during the week in Zenons nightclub- he’s now been married to her for about 30 years- funny how things stick in your head...

Top find that video.

I mentioned this another thread we hired a car my mate's mate drove us up he had no interest in football at all and waited for us outside fair play to him. We got politely and I mean really politely asked to leave this pub after we got caught smoking Bob Hope on the way up. The governor said in a voice that made Hugh Grant sound like Phil Mitchell '' Excuse me gentlemen could you leave my establishment and take your narcotics with you ''.

Just looked on google maps and we went to New Clee station. Looked at the image of the station and brought all the memories back!!

Thanks for that input on new clee station since that now expalins the serve lack of cfc fans at cleethorpes station and tumbleweed rolling about the platforms when i got there . The lack of cfc after the game has allways played on my mind .

This was taken after the Grimsby match. Canners looking cool Pat Nevin and Chris Hutchings looking very 80's.

Wikipedia says Chris Hutchings left us in '83, so he wasn't with us during THAT season. Must have been taken pre-season, not after the Grimsby game - unless he came back for the celebrations!
