Being watching Rice for the last couple of games. There is nothing outstanding about him in midfield.

I think it's because he's a pure defensive player. The trouble with our midfield options right now is that none of them specialise in just sitting in that area just in front of the back 4.

I think that's what they want Rice for because it allows the front players to be more fluid in their positioning because as we've seen early this season none of Werner, Havertz, Ziyech, CHO or Pulisic particularly stick to one area of the pitch.

If we press high but keep someone as deep as our backline to protect the backline it's not going to change much once our press is broken.

That being said, Rice did really well against Man City from the stats that I have seen but then again do we need another defensively oriented player? Yes he did well in a team that had 30% possession against Man City, that's not really how Chelsea wants to play in the future, we want to dominate the ball and compete and to play attractive football.

Sandro Tonali would be my pick for that deep position, the kid is really strong and good with the ball, a real mix of Gattuso and Pirlo.

He probably wouldn't sit as deep as the back 4 but in between the line of defence and midfield.

He'd just be the most defensive player outside of the defence itself.

Think Makelele or Matic. Players whose first job is to tidy up and keep it simple.

Based on the midfield performances from Chelsea so far this season? I would say yes.

Teams are playing through the lines quite easily too often. Kante and Kovacic want to roam a lot and Jorginho gets done for pace all the time.

Whether it's Rice or someone else I think we will sign someone to balance out the plethora of attacking players we now have.

According to the Athletic:

Chelsea haven’t given up on Declan Rice

Chelsea are hoping Declan Rice will ignore any efforts by West Ham to convince him to sign a new contract because they are planning to make another attempt to sign him in January, writes Simon Johnson.

Rice was wanted by Chelsea in the last transfer window, but the west London club never made an official bid because they were unable to sell the players required to raise the extra funds.

Chelsea spent in excess of £200 million on Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy, while Thiago Silva joined as a free agent.

Due to the size of that outlay, Chelsea didn’t have the cash to buy Rice as well, especially as West Ham manager David Moyes warned it would take “Bank of England” money for any deal to happen.

The Athletic understands that two permanent transfers of first-team squad players had been put in place which would have brought in enough capital to allow Chelsea to make an offer for Rice. But both fell through days before the October 5 deadline so things were put on hold.

Rice has been in fine form this season and West Ham are concerned Chelsea’s interest has not gone away.

The 21-year-old, who has already made 106 Premier League appearances, has a contract at the London Stadium until 2024, but West Ham want to discuss fresh terms and offer a significant pay rise to ensure he stays.

It will still be difficult for Chelsea to sign Rice in the new year, especially as West Ham have made a promising start to the campaign. But they believe the England international, who would be eligible to play for them in the Champions League, should they reach the knockout phase, can be convinced to make the switch should a fee be agreed. Outgoings could once again be an important factor.

As The Athletic revealed in September, coach Frank Lampard wants Rice to be the first-choice holding midfielder as well as a possible option at centre-back. N’Golo Kante started in the holding role in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Burnley but is not seen as a long-term option in that position. Lampard sees the former Leicester man as either the more adventurous central midfielder in a two or on the right of a three.

I do believe that there are better players for us out there than Rice. And I also think that our midfield is totally fine, the one place where we didn't really need new signings is our deep midfield.

Lets not forget that Gilmour and Ampadu should get their chance as well, I don't see what Lampard sees I'll admit it but at the same time I don't think we need to spend 50m on Rice when we can develop Gilmour and Ampadu for the long term.

Personally, feel like Reece and Ampadu could play that role potentially especially given that I believe Ampadu has played that role for Wales and Chelsea and Reece played that role at times with Wigan if I remember correctly. But, if Lampard sees something with Rice that Ampadu or Reece don't possess in that role, then I'll role with Lampard and him putting the players he wants in the roles he wants.
