Chelsea - General News & Info

Recommended Posts

I quite enjoy listening to Chelsea Podcasts and the London is Blue Podcast is one of my favorites especially the weekly Matt Law special. I thought I'll provide some updates from the weekly news on this thread. This week Matt Law had a special which involved his interview with Antonio Conte where he went through a number of issues and events involving his time at Chelsea:

  • Conte thinks that winning the league with us in his first season with us is his best achievement to date
  • After the loss to Arsenal he had to do an in depth presentation on how to turn the ship around, Roman was present at the presentation and Conte thought that the presentation went well and he got his message across about the changes required.
  • He thinks the Costa Text gate was blown out of proportion considering Costa had been pushing for a move all season. Costa was all set to leave for China in January and Conte pulled the move, his performances dropped after January. The text was Conte confirming to Costa that he was no longer part of his plans. He still looks at Costa fondly as he was a big reason we won the league.
  • He was hugely impressed with the detail Roman was after, he would want footage of training drills and other coaching off the pitch. Roman often attended training and observed.
  • Conte was hugely upset after missing out on Lukaku and VVD as he had thought that the club had both players secured. Conte invested a lot of time in the Lukaku deal, the club was sure that he will sign and took there foot off the gas. Agent issues occurred when United swooped in and signed Lukaku.
  • Matt Law stated that the club felt that Conte didnt invest the same time for VVD and Klopp was able to charm him and secure the deal for Liverpool.
  • Conte felt that he was a huge factor in getting Kante to sign for us.
  • He did not want to comment on the players he signed as backup to Lukaku and VVD (Rudiger & Morata)
  • He feels he has unfinished business in the Premier League and will look to return at some stage
  • He will not return to Chelsea as it was a messy divorce, Marina will not hire Conte again (According to Matt Law)
  • Huge respect for the fans, he felt he could use the fans at Stamford Bridge to galvanize the players during difficult moments in the game. He believes that is one area where he has struggled due to no fans being allowed in the stadium this season.

In one of the previous episodes the focus was on Michael Emenalo and how Matt was pushing the narrative of Emenalo to be made the new FA chairman based upon the excellent job he did at Chelsea especially on establishing our academy.

(This was a few weeks ago so I can't remember the full discussion)

  • His role was more academy biased as opposed to main transfers however he was involved on the transfer front.
  • He had limited involvement in the last few terrible windows when we brought in a lot of deadwood
  • His main achievement for Chelsea included building a young player database which was in-house developed rather then a off the shelf software, his decision for the move and investment was vindicated when the software for Liverpool, City and United was hacked.
  • Emenalo was one of the first people in football to identify Belgium as a future footballing superpower, AVB laughed at Emenalo's focus on Belgium and asked him to focus his efforts on South America to find talent.

Another Weekly Matt Law Special today:

  • Tomori is most likely on his way out and AC Milan is the preferred destination for Tomori however AC Milan are after an 18 Month loan with an option to buy at the end. Neither Chelsea or Tomori want him to leave permanently. Reason for AC Milan interest is down to the Sporting Director at AC Milan who is a huge admirer of Tomori, he has been after Tomori since his time at Roma where he also attempted to sign him.
  • Chelsea hesitant with an 18 month loan for Tomori because there is a likelihood that both Christensen and Rudiger could be sold in the summer. This would mean Chelsea would have to buy 2 CB's or alternatively bring in Guehi.
  •  Question was asked of Matt as to why Frank has switched from a meritocracy last season to playing his new signings consistently regardless of performances this season (Stats show that Chelsea have only won 1 match this season in the League when Tammy has not featured). Frank believes in the talents of the new signings such as Kai and Werner and does not want to discard them like KDB, Salah & Cuadrado 😛 with only limited opportunities.
  • Lukaku and Alex Sandro are 2 signings which Matt was surprised did not happen as Chelsea were incredibly close in securing both.
  • Higuain's incoming under Sarri was a huge surprise because everyone at the club was against it, Player analysis showed that he was past it and will not suit the PL. Finance did not like it as the loan was incredibly expensive and neither did it work for the squad composition. Sarri was the only one who wanted Higuain and the club decided to back their Manager and hope Sarri could get him performing.

Emenalo getting a lot of respect from Law, maybe he wasn't the deserved scapegoat many assumed he was.

I never really commented on Emenalo because I really had no idea what he did or didn't do, I just know he had a lot of say in youth development, and I don't think he did a bad job there at all.

I think the timing of him leaving alongside our terrible transfer windows just prior resulted in people turning on him but Matt Law described his role to be more focused on our youth rather then primarily the first team signings. With his project around the Talent acquisition from Belgium he managed to sign Courtois, Lukaku, KDB and Hazard (Although Hazard was a widely well known talent), all are arguably around the world class level and have been for number of seasons and sadly we only managed to fully utilize the talents of one of those.

Also goes to show the level of incompetence from AVB (Allegedly) for dismissing the talent search in Belgium.

Another appearance from Matt Law on the London is Blue Podcast, some of the highlights from him during the Podcast:

  • His understanding was that maybe the board will give him some additional time but possibly due to developments with Tuchel they decided to act and get rid of Frank.
  • Contrary to standard belief the board was not happy with Frank finishing 4th & felt he should've been challenging
  • Frank was on a 2 year contract not 3, Frank mentioned contract talks before the Tottenham game however everyone was puzzled as to why he is talking contracts when he has 18 months left realistically he only had 6 months left.
  • Frank wanted player exits and a slimmer squad but the club were happy with the size of the squad and were not in a rush to get rid of the senior players.
  • Some players were unhappy with limited game time, mentioned Alonso not happy and Frank was sympathetic towards him. Reason for being unhappy was Alonso was not even able to take part in practice games in preferred position due to him being 3rd choice and Chilwell and Emerson taking LB spots in training games.
  • Standard disagreements nothing too malicious, players just voicing disagreements in team meetings etc.
  • Feeling around the club was that a number of people were not happy with Frank from day 1
  • Frank was a PR appointment, fanbase was split after the Sarri reign and with the transfer ban and Hazard leaving they needed a win. Club felt appointing Frank would be a good PR move and would unit the fanbase and bring optimism, plan was always to bring in someone more experienced.
  • Good move from the board to keep Joe Edwards around, he has worked with the youth ever since they were 14, Joe is rated very highly amongst the club and could be a future Manager in the mold of Brendan Rodgers.
  • Frank would have been fired even if he finished top 4 and won the FA Cup this season.
  • He feels Franks sacking was the 2nd most harshest signing of the Roman era behind Ancelotti
  • Kante is not happy with the consistent Manager changes and will not be against a move. Has lost a lot of friends through transfers, was very close to Costa & Hazard. Sarri played him through injury and this has taken its toll and now his injuries are more serious and more frequent.
  • Tuchel wanted the Chelsea role in 2017 when Conte was threatening to walk, Chelsea were advised against Tuchel due to his profile and history of board disagreements.
  • Tuchel made himself available again before Sarri was appointed and once again the board went with an alternative option in Sarri.
  • Tuchels aim is titles and the board may be setting him up to fail with offering an 18 month contract and asking for him to get the team challenging immediately.
  • Chelsea's board are unrealistic and stuck in the past, the short term model does not work and the landscape has changed. City, Liverpool and Leicester have proven that you need a long term plan to succeed. Chelsea no longer have established world class players who can manage themselves and they cannot just splash the cash as everyone has money. They havent challenged for the title since winning it and haven't been serious contenders in the CL since Mourinho's first year, more significant changes are required then purely a managerial change.

One more thing I forgot to add:

  • He talked about how under appreciated Tomori to AC Milan is, Italian defending is amongst the best in Europe and this is one of the first instances of a English defender moving to Italy to a prominent Serie A team who is challenging and immediately walking into the starting 11.
  • Maldini had a big role in the move and Tomori is learning Italian to ensure the move is a success.
  • Chelsea have inserted a buying clause which is deliberately high so that AC Milan cannot realistically buy him even if they wanted to, he can see Tomori returning to Chelsea after the loan.

I know this is Chelsea, and there are standards and it is important to continue to hold those standards up. But, man... its a tad delusional, yeah? Thought given the situation, losing Hazard, transfer ban, etc etc. the board would have some sort of semblance of rational understanding of the predicament that was the 2019/20 season, right?

I guess that's in keeping with the Chelsea way of going through managers like crazy.  I think Frank deserved to be let go but at the same time when you bring in a new coach you should probably show him a little more dedication than a year and half long contract.

Another appearance from Matt Law on the London is Blue Podcast, some of the highlights from him during the Podcast:

  • Club is very happy with Tuchel, they expected him to close the gap in the first few weeks to the Top 4 but actually getting the team into top 4 has been excellent due to other teams dropping off. He has set very high standards and may be a victim of his own early success if standards slip.
  • Key to Tuchel's success has been him taking the blueprint of Conte's defensive unit and building a team on that.
  • Club are very Happy with Thiago Silva and want to extend the contract however they are taking their time in contract talks in case he picks up a serious injury. Thiago was a sounding board for Lampard (Through a translator), the squad look up to him and have also adopted his recovery sessions due to his fitness levels.
  • Thiago Silva is also happy with the Club, he has option to discuss contract with other clubs but he is not exploring other options.
  • Chelsea were interested in Upamecano however the scouts were not convinced, Chelsea have younger options (Tomori, Guehi, Mbuyamba) so therefore are looking for a dominant experienced player.
  • Chelsea are interested in David Alaba but will not pay £400,00 per week, club is worried this will create disharmony amongst the existing players and make a mockery of the salary plan. Also Alaba wants to play midfield rather then in defense.
  • Journalists in Spain are convinced he wants to join Real Madrid but Matt cannot confirm.
  • Chelsea were close to signing Haaland when he joined Dortmund (Closer then United), Chelsea were monitoring Haaland and were put off by the agent fees associated with the transfer.
  • Chelsea could be in for Haaland again however Dortmund will prefer to sell Sancho rather then Haaland, they may be forced to sell both if they don't make CL football.
  • Matt believe Chelsea should go in for Lukaku again, Inter have defaulted on loan payments for Hakimi and therefore someone like Lukaku would be obtainable for a reasonable fee as Inter will be forced to sell. No official links or approach for Lukaku by Chelsea, purely speculation as Chelsea will be in for a Striker this summer window.
  • Conte definitely would not want to sell Lukaku as he firmly believes Lukaku is the best striker in the world and Lukaku also loves Conte.

This doesnt surprise me one bit, his agent is mapping out his future to make the most money possible for him and the player unfortunately.

Wonder if we could up the sign-on fee and get his salary more in line with the top earners at the club? He'd be quite ideal for the LCB position.

Another Week Another Matt Law appearance on London is Blue, Highlights as follows:

  • Chelsea have an interest in Haaland, to be more precise Roman is interested in bringing Haaland to Chelsea. No discount from Dortmund and the total cost of bringing Haaland to Stamford Bridge will be in the region of £200m which includes agent fees.
  • The transfer has a very Hazardesque feel to it because it involves once a decade opportunity to sign a truly elite player for whom the next move will be most likely the club he will spend majority of his career at due to the size of the move. Chelsea paid big agent fees to bring Hazard to Chelsea and will need to do the same if they want to secure Haaland, only 3 PL clubs can realistically afford Haaland; United, Chelsea & City however City need to be careful with FFP. PSG's interest will depend on the Mbappe situation.
  • Matt not too sure about the credibility of the news surrounding Tammy wanting to leave and not willing to negotiate contract, both parties are not in a rush to get into negotiation. Chelsea tend to start negotiation when a player has <2 years on contract which is the stage at the end of the season. Tammy will fight for his place even if Haaland is signed, if he is not getting game time then he may consider his options. Matt's opinion is that he is hugely underrated at Chelsea and underpaid at £70k p/w, top scorer last season and top scorer so far this season.
  • Surprisingly Tuchel has not been working on the technical and strategic side of the game with the squad, most of the emphasis in training has been on the atmosphere and comradery. Understandable considering limited time between games
  • A lot of work going on with Ben Chilwell in training to get him up to speed in playing the LWB role, break from playing time may be beneficial to Ben due to his injury record over last 18 months
  • Tomori is learning a great deal in Italy and is learning Italian and wants to become fluent before the end of the season, Tomori believes he is well suited to the PL with his physicality and pace but is learning a great deal on his positional and tactical awareness. Been working on marking Zlatan and learning a lot about striker movements especially on set pieces.
  • Tomori likened the sessions to his time with Chelsea squad under Conte where Conte would spend huge amount of time picking the defenders apart positionally even after comfortable wins with clean sheets.
  • Chelsea will most likely sell 2 defenders in the summer and bring in 1 CB, Zouma is likely to be the outgoing defender as he will demand the most fee.
  • Guehi is highly rated at Chelsea and if Lampard remained Manager their was a good chance he wouldve been part of the PL squad next season, now he is most likely to have a PL loan next season or be sold with a buyback clause similar to Ake.
  • RLC's time may be coming to an end at Chelsea and he may need to move on, due to his injury record their were not many takers for his loan last summer window. If he makes it to the end of the season without injury their may be big interest in RLC for a permanent move. If Fulham stay up they may be interested.
  • Barkley's form has hugely gone downhill since his injury at Villa, is in danger of being dropped from the Villa team.

Got 18, realised Shevchenko but too slow typing it.

Spelt the French one incorrectly too.

Forgot who went to Millwall. and who became  manager at Northampton and the other two I'll not mention in case I spoil it.

Tomori has been playing well for AC Milan.

IMO we should get a new CB which should be our priority since it seems that T.Silva won't be extending his contract. We have lacked a leader in defense and if we ever want to do well with a back 4 formation a world class CB is a must.

Zouma has done well but I feel that we should get an upgrade, not sure though who would be our top target.
