Hes an elite goalie. Simple as. Thought hecwas a shoe in for BM but Neuer signed back on. If he's available there will be competition which I expect we'll lose.

I wish we’d stop this expecting goalkeepers to be Pirlo bo**ocks. If this guy can save shots and catch crosses well then he sounds like a massive upgrade. And then he can throw it half way up the pitch to a midfielder and we can go on the attack.

incidentally, I was pretty impressed with Bulka last night playing for Nice v PSG. He looked a lot better than the two we have battling to be least bad at the moment.

Know little about him. Don’t Newcastle have long standing interest in Trafford?

They do. Will be interesting to see him back in the PL. Absolutely outstanding for England U21s, struggled badly in his PL season. Easily bullied, never looked in control, not helped by Kompany's preference to overlook defence as an option. Outstanding Championship season behind a very strong Championship defence. Championship the operative word. We'll see.

Bulka will always be the one that got away I think, would’ve easily solidified the position for us for years, just some terrible timing.

Well unfortunately this is how Maresca wants to play so if he's as bad with his feet regularly as I've seen then I don't see how he would be a good fit.

Easy we spend £50+ million on this lad. Then Maresca deems his passing insufficient after the first month, and reinstates Sanchez between the sticks for the remainder of the season.

Sanchez strikes me to be as bullet proof as Maresca and our other "spine" players.

How many keepers do we need exactly?

Sanchez, Jorgensen, Kepa, Petrovic, Penders......Kobel? Have I forgotten any? Probably.

Plus half the academy numbers are keepers, apparently none of them top of the bill.

I asked AI to manufacture a rumour to see whether it would pick Kobel - the conclusion it came to is far funnier:

(For the record Steele has started two league games for Brighton this season, both in August. He was also out for three months with a shoulder injury).

Football Rumour: Chelsea Pondering Move for Brighton's Jason Steele

Given Chelsea's current goalkeeper situation, marked by Robert Sanchez's inconsistent form and the need for reliable competition, a believable rumour would link them to a Premier League-proven goalkeeper with a strong recent track record.

Rumour: Sources close to Chelsea FC suggest the club are internally discussing a potential summer move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper, Jason Steele. The 34-year-old has impressed consistently for the Seagulls, establishing himself as their first-choice under multiple managers and demonstrating excellent shot-stopping abilities and composure. While Brighton are unlikely to actively seek his departure, Chelsea are reportedly considering making an offer in the region of $\pounds$15-20 million to bring in his experience and reliability to challenge and potentially compete with Robert Sanchez for the starting spot.

Why this is believable:

  • Chelsea's Need for Stability: After periods of uncertainty in the goalkeeping department, Chelsea might be looking for a more dependable option or at least strong competition to push their current number one. Steele has proven his quality in the Premier League.

  • Steele's Premier League Experience: Unlike bringing in a goalkeeper from a foreign league, Steele has a proven track record in the English top flight, minimizing the adaptation period.

  • Brighton's Player Trading Model: Brighton have shown a willingness to sell players for the right price, even key members of their squad, as part of their sustainable financial model. While Steele is important, a reasonable offer from a big club could be considered.

  • Age and Price Point: At 34, Steele wouldn't command an astronomical fee, aligning with a potential strategy of adding experienced quality without breaking the bank, especially if they have other priority areas to invest in. The rumoured price range is realistic for a Premier League-proven goalkeeper of his age and contract situation.

  • Logical Competition: Bringing in Steele wouldn't necessarily signal the immediate end for Sanchez but would provide genuine competition and a reliable alternative, something Chelsea arguably lacks at present.

This rumour presents a scenario where Chelsea address a potential weakness with a player who has demonstrated his capabilities in the same league, and the selling club might be open to negotiation for the right price.
