g3.7 Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 what I want to know is this: having been done by movement off the ball in both european cup finals he has played in, why is carragher considered "world class" or a great man marker?
Enrico Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Because you are England and other than John Terry you've got no one else. So you just make one up.
bjd Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Carragher is nothing but a very average defender, ive always thought this. On another note i thought Icke Stevie was amazing last night, full of drive, skill and ability. Was unlucky to be on the losing team as he is born a winner and was showing last night why he is the best midfielder in Europe and deserving of his bumper pay rise. How he didnt win PFA player of the year is beyond me. Should get another MBE for at least making the final and hopefully a minutes silence for being robbed.
Maksimov Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I've heard Owen Hargreaves being called "world class", so maybe the standards have dropped.
Mod Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Did people catch the interview with him before the game, the interviewer asked if he had a wallet on him?? He probably had 18? None of them his!!
Taipan Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Yep. Agger went to take Kaka, and he called to make sure sure Carragher had Inzaghi. Carragher only stood and watched. When Kaka put Inzaghi through Carra stopped and put his hands on his knees.
Guest Brian M Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Because you are England and other than John Terry you've got no one else. So you just make one up. Um...Lamps...Joe Cole...Bridge...
Gem Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I thought he did well one-vs-one against Kaka. Shhhh! No praising. This isn't the time for logicial thought, this is the time to point and laugh. [okay I'm aware its Stevens and not Carjacker, but still funny as heck]
g3.7 Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 Because you are England and other than John Terry you've got no one else. So you just make one up. Um...Lamps...Joe Cole...Bridge... none of those are central defenders. now, people, this is a great footballer: 5 european cups, despite playing football for about a fifth of the time liverpool have existed. going by the popular scouse theory re: history, this officially makes maldini bigger than liverpool fc.
RedRobMol Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Just to get into the festive spirit just to put that picture into persepctive...
glory55 Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 He is well over-rated but to be fair to him. He is a good defender,he has no pace but positions him-self well and in general his tackling is well timed. He is strong and very brave he can't pass the ball, but then again that aint his job. I wouldn't say he wasn't any good, cos he is. But he is well over hyped....... Speaking of over-rate players two words Johnathan Woodgate (WE HATE LE*DS)
TomP Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I think Carragher is a right tosser, but speaking objectively he is a above-average premiership-standard defender, but not world class. I think in a lot of ways, he is typical of English defenders of the last 20 years - strong, hard in the tackle, good in a physical battle, good in the air, good at defending crosses. But, not great when it comes to defending against skillful dribblers, or against teams that can play good football on the ground, he will be shown up - like he was against Milan.

Its just his speed of movement
just Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 i dont think he was shown up in the final, although it wasnt his best performance, but you can see whenever he plays against henry where his deficiencies lie. And Zola. Whenever he had to mark Zola, Franco always made him his bitch for the day. That famous clip where "Dignity" Carragher and half the Liverplod defence are trying to get the ball off God, in an area the size of a phonebox, is still one of the funniest things I have ever seen at football. Classic.
