I love films, Mod. Films and tv-series. Watch them every day, especially during award season when I try to watch every nominated film and maybe even all the nominated actors/actresses. And then I sit awake all night every time there's an award show on tv. First watching the people arrive on the red carpet (missed some this year though) and comment on their dresses.
To me it's better than christmas.
I can talk films for hours (just ask my mom
) and when nobody's around I'll talk about films to myself - and I don't always agree with what I say.In other words, I think you can say that I'm one step away from joining the real life cast of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
Oh and by the way, I can't really recognize the movies you have listed under "favourite films". It's a bit annoying. Are they Hitchcock, Fellini, Bergman or Spielberg?

Agreed.
Sean Penn, for me, is head and shoulders above every other actor in the business at the moment (at least in the mainstream). In addition he gains further credibilityby being very selective about the films he chooses to work in (yes De Niro I am thinking about you).
Brad Pitt doesn't get the credit he deserves (probably due to his pretty boy image). He has been excellent in a number of films (especially Twelve Monkeys, Se7en, Fight CLub and Kalifornia) and although he did have a bit of a slump for a while (Meet Joe Black probably being the biggest waste of talent other than CLaudio played Dennis Wise out of position) he was still very good in Babel nd then had a massive return to formin Burn After Reading.
I haven't seen Benjamin Button so can't comment on whether he specifically deserves an oscar for that perofmrnace however, in general, I think there aer alot of far orse actors who have won oscars. Christ, Tom Hanks has a collection of them and he is less convincing than Drogba!

Still trying to watch all the nominated films and performances, but it's not easy and I'm running out of time.
For me "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role" is an open race (I doubt Tomei will win though).
The restare a little more predictable. Either it's a one man race (Ledger and Slumdog) or else it'll be a battle between two persons (Penn/Rourke & Streep/Winslet). Atleast if we're talking about who the favourites are.
But we also know that there can be upsets. Heath Ledger and Slumdog are huge favourites but they can still lose. I've predicted that "Benjamin Button" will be the big loser but it's a big movie with a lot of promotion and that can actually help. Slumdog is the peoples film, Benjamin Button is the movie industries film.
And Ledger can miss out again. I don't think that will happen because
A) He was bloody brilliant.
Who would dare not to vote on him?
But there are other great performances with Seymour-Hoffman being one. His scenes against Meryl Streep in Doubt is electrifying. Best last year, no doubt about it.
Gonna have to see "The Wrestler". After all, it seems like it'll be between Rourke and Penn so I would like to have seen them both. Also, Tomei is in that one so I'll have seen two performances if I see that one.

I really advise you to go see The Wrestler. Absolutely brilliant film, and Rourke is outstanding!

I've finally watched it!
All I can say is this: "The Wrestler" is not the best movie I've seen but it was a pleasant surprise. I didn't have high hopes when I started watching it and it turned out to be better than I had expected.
As for Mickey Rourke, well he did an amazing job. Not too subtle or over the top. Perfect.
Having said that I still can't decide if I'd prefer Penn or Rourke to win the Oscar. Maybe I'll go with the "Penn have won and Rourke has done an amazing comeback" :wub:
And as for Marisa Tomei I can now say that she should not win for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role". She was good, but not brilliant. Personally I hope Amy Adams wins. But I haven't seen "Vicky Christina Barcelona" yet so maybe Penelope Cruz is better.

Too tired to write much now.
Have just finished watching the show and I really need a couple of hours sleep now.
Rourke missing out was the only real surprise (even if I thought Penn had a good chance). Don't know much about the foreign language films so maybe it was a bit of a surprise that "Waltz With Bashir" didn't win?
Hugh Jackman was good. Not as funny as some other hosts, but he looked handsome in a classic sort of way and he was solid. Charming too.
I thought that overall the show was better than recent years. The idea with former winners presenting the Oscar to the actors/actresses and speaking straight to them was really nice.
The dresses on the women looked fine too. Some were excellent. Natalie Portman looked amazing and Kate Winslets dress was nice too.
As for the men they all looked almost the same but not surprisingly Mickey Rourke stood out a bit, but in a good way. Nice suit that really suited him.
But going back to the women (they're more interesting than the men on the red carpet) I have to wonder why the young girls all tried to dress in clothes that are too old for them? I just think it looks odd when teenagers put on dresses that are better suited for mature women.
Oh, and I loved Angelina Jolies earrings. Imagine them on someone with green eyes. Now that would look stunning.
Finally, am I the only one who felt a bit odd when they gave the Oscar to Heath Ledger and played a very up beat and happy tune? I'm not saying that I wanted some sad emotional tune but this just felt wrong. I don't know why. Oh, never mind. I don't know what I wanted to hear.
A yet another final thing. Why wasn't Daniel Day Lewis there? Doesn't the winner from last year usually hand out the Oscar to this years winner? I was waiting to see him there on stage.
I know I wrote that I was too tired to write much and I've already said "finally" like twice, but I have another thing to say...though I've forgotten what while I was writing this line.
Oh yes, now I remember.
God I hate the commercials! One award, then go to commercial, another award, yet another commercial break. It really does ruin the show if you ask me. Better to have fewer commercials that might be a bit longer so you have time to go to the bathroom or bring out more sodas and stuff (I've probably put on a few pounds during the Oscars).
I was however pleasantly surprised that for once (probably the first time since I started watchin the Oscars) they didn't have commercial breaks between the last few big categories. It was just "best actress", "best actor" & "best motion picture" and they were done. Really nice.
Another thing. Did anyone here know that Anne Hathaway could sing?
I was actually amazed that she could sing so well. Really nice!
If I'll get back to the dresses (gonna have to round things off now) I just have to say that we didn't get to see any crazy stuff. Well, okay, Rourkes was odd but it suited him and Beyonces wasn't great but it wasn't appauling either. So the question remains: When will we see another Bjork? :spin:

am pleased too, penn was good, and am a big fan of danny boyle, but personally I felt the film had cut out characters and was merely decent, and he's made far better films yet this is what wins him the award.
similar story for winslet winning for a decent performance in an average film, scorsese winning with the departed, pacino for scent of a woman etc...
the awards have always been a bit of a joke.
good that bejamin button only got the awards it deserved (i.e. technical ones), again funny pitt gets the nomination here despite loads of better performances and far better films (just watched twelve monkeys for example). not sure what he's done though to earn the criticism, it's good to see a "star" / celebrity actor who has made a career with a load of interesting and varied roles.

i totally agree with that g4. i feel the same about johnny depp as well. great actor, always interesting role choices and one day will surely in a oscar.
