3 points, could we?

My main concern is that we have to play, and beat, Man U & Arsenal at home and Spurs, Everton & Blackburn away.

Isn't it Newcastle last day of the season??

I certainly hope so,cos we got a big jolly planned in geordieland after the game.

We should be alright up there.

 
Yeah weve played Blackburn away.

I think our run in is a tough one. Everton away will be touch and go, Man City have good record at home and even though we used to win for fun at WHL im scared about Wednesday.

And then of course we have those two home games. My heart tells me we are playing Arsenal at a good time and we should really get stuck into them , and when was the last time Utd scored at SB ? However my head tells me we will get two points max from those games. I think if we are going to win the league we need the full six points. Yes im speaking as a glass half empty type of person but from what ive seen i have nothing to tell me Grant will be able to match up against Wenger or Fergie.

Like Butch however, it would give me great pleasure to be proved wrong.

This time next week we will for sure know a lot more about how legit our championship challenge is.

 
Also agreed it was a meaningless stat, I was just trying to say that under Grant we've done very well in the league so far - a lot better than anyone probably expected. I just didn't like the way people in this thread are so quick to pre-empt that we're not going to win the league and that it's all Grant's fault, personally I think we're doing really well, but there you go.

One step/game at a time boys and girls.

I agree with Butch - I think that 2nd spot given 4 draws for the Arse is definitely on (I mean a month ago who could have realistically thought that they'd draw 4 in a row and against fair to middling teams - top game by the way Marky Schwarzer). But to suggest given our run in that we can overtake Manure - I just don't get that feeling. I think some of this enthusiasm may have come about because we had a comfortable win against Derby and Manure only got the draw against them on the weekend (albeit that they had numerous other chances to convert). And I suppose if we beat spuds, the arse and manure who knows? Wishful thinking though. Time for the Panda (and the players of course

) to shine now we're at the business end. Let's see where were at come Sunday avo (well 4.00 am Monday for the likes of Qaz, Ozboy, Brian et al and me). If we've got 6 more points then, well, maybe I'll give the impossible dream more credence.

 
Correction for me too. Manure of course got the goal late on. Too much wine and heat down here - it's 22 degrees celsius down here at 11.10 pm as I post. Magic.

 
Of course it is do-able but we have to beat the big teams and Grant hasn't exactly excelled in that department has he? But I am quietly optimistic as I think we should be in our position but its nothing to shout about, I hope we just sneak up and win it and shut everybody up and I agree it will be a massive achievement and it would be brilliant to win it but better than Bolton? I don't think it will be, that was the most unbelieveable feeling ever and especially after going so long without and I don't seeing that being topped anytime soon or perhaps ever

I didn't expect us to even be in with a shout when Jose and the club parted ways. So, I'm impressed by our place in the league standings.However, I do NOT believe we will win the league (it's a self-preservation thing). Of course, on paper we are in with a good shout. However, I too do not have confidence in Grant's leadership when we face up to the top 4-6 teams in the EPL. Starting with Spurs at WHL, I think we could draw or lose just as easily as we could win. Then against Arsenal and particularly Man Utd, I seriously doubt that we'll be able to pull out the wins when we have to. They will be some crackers as games but I simply do not have the confidence we'll win and anything less would not be enough.

I'd love to be proved wrong, however.

Grant's got us this far, whose to say he won't get us there?

I'm not saying it will happen, but i'm certainly not going to rule it out either. So far this year (2008) our record in the Premiership is played 10, won 8, drawn 2 and lost none. Granted we have a tough run in, but all we need do is maintain that record and we are will push Man Utd very close for the title.

Also this whole "Grant can't beat the big teams" thing is unfair. In a one-off game situation anything can happen. Just as when Mikel was sent off in the first game, imagine a Man Utd player gets sent off early when we play them, would you be confident then?

One other thing, Man Utd still have to play Arsenal and Liverpool again do they not?. Surely they are going to drop some points.

 
Hmm there have been so many dissappointments this season already from Mourinho going, to the lack of goals to the slipups in the big cups, the losses at Manchester and the Emirates. I just don't feel confident that this team has the steel to achieve such a difficult task.

However we live in hope and I'm not giving up until the fat lady (not tubby) sings.

It doesn't mean he won't do it in the future, but for now the signs do not breed confidence, which is the point I am trying to make. I am not confident because of what I see.

The "anything can happen" argument holds true for all matches, including the ones he wins. If he concentrates on what his team is able to do, penalties and sendings off, while potentially important, do not always have to influence the outcome of games. I think in the first place we simply have not played well enough against any of the top sides.

We can't afford to be thinking about what the other clubs do against each other. I do believe the matches against them will be very important and we do have to take care of business in those matches. And, at the risk of beating a dead horse, I am not confident.

Don't get me wrong, Qaz, I want to win as much as the next Chelsea fan. I am not one to cut my nose to spite my face. I don't want us to do poorly so Grant gets the sack. But I did predict we would not beat Spurs and that has already come true. I also do not think we'll beat Arsenal at the Bridge so we'll have to see how that one pans out. We've just lost our ruthlessness, which was a trait that gave us the upper hand against Arsenal in Jose's days. I expect another open game, much like against Spurs, with another score draw, possibly 2-2.

And it won't be good enough, will it?

Only 6 points clear of Liverpool is my biggest concern now.

Maybe unfair was the wrong word. Rather I meant that making an objective judgement on anyone based on a handful of matches is silly. But your not making an objective judgement, your stating in opinion, so its different.

I agree with most of that. I do however think that starting Pizarro up top as the lone striker against Arsenal because all our other options were out and Mikel's sending off against Man Utd both influenced that results. That is not to say we would have won if it didn't happen, but it certainly had effect on the result.

To be honest, I have doubts myself, but my feelings were that people (not yourself) were writing us off when its too early to be doing so.

Who knows, its possible we could draw Arsenal on the weekend and Man Utd later on in the season and still win the title, unlikely, but possible none the less.

spot on blue monty,and a draw it was.after dropping 2 points today it must put pressure on utd knowing we are right there amongst them

 
the key is for us to beat wigan and everton before we play man u and then the pressure will be on them...who knows they may drop pts before then as they have arse and blackburn...it's amazing that we have a chance to pull this off...still have a lot of things to do, but the players must be getting some sort of belief despite the unrest in the camp
