Sat 31st Dec 1983 with a 11:30 kick off.  We won 1 - 0 with  David Speedie scoring in the 77th min..

King Kerry Dixon had a penalty saved. His third missed pen in 2 games. I don't believe it even now,,,

That season. Couldn't resist, again !

Mickey Thomas debut in a 2-1 win at The Baseball Ground on 14th Jan 1984.
The final piece of the jigsaw of THAT team, we were unstoppable once Mickey T joined. In my time the construction of THAT team was the greatest bit of team building ever at Chelsea, especially as we had no money! "Jonny Neal's blue and white army"

Read some bonkers article about him- he and Joey Jones used to drive down from Wrexham every day for training ( 4 hours each way) and kip on fans sofas or along those lines.

Derek Johnstone mentioned that in his book a few years ago and he couldn't believe it !

Totally agree. Unsurprisingly !

They had slept in the referee’s room and went on the pitch at night. The best story from Micky T was about when he and Joey wore stocking masks and pretended to rob the box office!!

Mickey T v Leeds at The Bridge in April 1984. The 5-0 game.

Micky Droy Testimonial v Arsenal.  1st Nov 1983.   We beat them 2-1.   Micky Droy and David Speedie scoring for us.
I was there. I once met him in a pub when I was a young teenager and he bought be a pint and shared a fag. Top bloke, he had a big commanding presence and both humble and well-informed. He was with Joey Jones, another legend who gave it his all. Despite their limitations as players both of these men were proud to wear the shirt (and what a shirt the Le Coq Sportif shirt was!). If our current players play with the same intent then we will end third this season.

Agreed re him and Joey Jones with great attitude and commitment to our club back then.

Just trying to imagine any modern team trying 'route one' or trying to 'mix it physically', with the two of them in our defence, :Connie_threaten:

Utter Carnage...

Was there that day-and Nevin's run is one of my most cherished memories. Watching from the Shed in front of the Tea bar Pat picked it up no more than 6 yards from our goal line, beat a couple of defenders immediately a one two with Kerry on half way then continued drifting past a more helpless Newcastle players and ended up hanging a cross to the far post where I think it was headed out for a corner..

We've had so many wonderful days in the last 20+ years but that season is still my favourite when taken as a whole. Saw 44 games including 2 reserve matches, 5-0 to start, 5-0 to finish, a new group of heroes from nothing really, fantastic away days all season (Man City on a Friday night my favourite I think) great foootball, fantastic atmosphere all year really.
Would be in a list of my favourite games , reason being for the absolute joyous feeling that experienced at Stamford Bridge that day. We had been through such a bad time in the previous seasons and didn't really know what to expect with all these new players but remember the feeling of incredible joy and excitement as the game went on and the realisation that we might actually have a team again after having gone through all the lows.

Wonderful day

Cheers, great photos.!
The Derby picture we had the whole terrace and the two tiers of seats above!

Leeds 8-9000 Newcastle 8,000 Pompey was about 11 plus Brighton 15,000 approx. Palace Fulham the same Man City we were on all four sides of ground so hard to say. Grimsby loads paid cash to get in on an all ticket game. Got to be over 10,000 there.

Such a great season to travel both home and away. You just never knew until you got there how many would be at the game!
