We need to cling on any and every trophy we can to keep the players motivated. 2nd or 3rd place finish just isn't motivation enough for these lads.

We lost to swansea in a 2 game matchup so losing to an experienced european side should be really easy.

Should win this regardless of the strength of the team we put out, but A**x in the next round placed above City in their group so good luck to us lol.

To be fair to City, I doubt any English team would have advanced through that group, but it was more like City f**king up those 2 games than A**x winning it.

I was going to say that the title of this thread was wrong, that the match was on the 13th...then I remembered.

Thursday nights.

Europa League.

Someone get me a length of rope so I can hang myself.

Don't be so dramatic. I can't remember anyone complaining when it was called the UEFA Cup. I recall we were quite pleased to be playing in it.

I hope we go through to the next stage. At least then we'd have progressed further in the competition than either of the Manc clubs.

I think both of them got to the next round, City beat Porto and United beat A**x.

Ah, quite right. I remembered they got knocked out early, but forgot they didn't get knocked out straight away. Well, then we need to get through to the quarter finals.

What am I saying? We need to win this! I'm not sure if we can, mind you.

Yeah we can, we owe Athletico Madrid a thrashing for embarrassing us in the Super Cup :Connie_threaten:

Oh what am i talking about, with Benitez in charge nothing goes to plan.

Ah don't get me wrong Maksimov, i'd love us to win the EL. But we'd all rather still be in the CL, wouldn't we?

Sure, but I hope we really go for it in Europa League. We SHOULD have enough quality (well, the players do, if not the manager) to do that AND secure a place for next season's UCL. Oh yeah, AND really go for it in the FA Cup.

Well exactly. If we finish 2nd or third in the PL, have the FA Cup and Europa League trophies, are season won't be looking too shabby.

And i for one want to see more of Marin. The EL would be a great platform for him to test his abilities, especially against the 'easier' opposition.

I love all European football can't take the snobbery of it is only the Europa league bo**ocks that gets trotted out. Would I rather be in
the c/l yes but we are where we are, players like Oscar Dave and Moses and a few other haven’t played much European footie so it will also give them some
extra experience.

Evissy makes a great point that it keeps them motivated and gives them something to play for not downplaying the importance of finishing
3rd or above for next season but they don't give you a trophy for that last time I checked.

Yeah those games against St. Gallen, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Viking were real crackers and I love being reminded of them.

Maybe we would have been pleased playing in it, but sadly we never got through the qualifications.

I don't give a T0$$ about this competition at all. I'd rather prioritise the FA Cup game at the weekend over this, so would like to see Marin, Bertrand, Torres etc start. Maybe Mikel and Moses too depending on how they are upon their return. Even our 2nd string side should be able to win out there, and then hopefully we can bring back JT, Lamps, Ramires, Ba etc for Brentford and rip them apart.

Why isn't winning the Europa League just as important as winning the F.A Cup ?

has anyone seen if it's on tv in uk? I have looked on my sky guide and itv are showing Spu*rs and ESPN are showing Newcastle...have we fallen so low that the european champions aren't even being shown on tv? I know it's not a glamorous tie, but we are one of the biggest clubs left in the competition (not saying best team) and it says a lot if you can't see it anywhere...there is not even a champions league highlights type show on itv

ignore the above...didn't spot it was a 6pm kick off, rather than usual 8 and just seen it's on espn

First leg is on ESPN and the 2nd leg isn't being televised at all. Typical bullsh*t, i am getting fed up with watching Chelsea on a crappy live stream on the internet. I don't have SKY so i have only watched Chelsea 3 times on tv this season, and all of them were defeats, the rest have been on rubbish live streams.
