As far as I have read, I dont think weve made an official bid for him right? Dont see why £25 million would not be enough to pry him away from Madrid. Hes clearly second choice to Pepe, for who knows what reason. Think hed be better option than Stones.

I think you need to check your info again. Last season he played in 21 league games and ended up playing for more than 2000 minutes. He's not "clearly second choice". Also, Pepe is 32 years old. Varane is their future. He's not going anywhere.

We were linked with him earlier this year, Mourinho even made some comments about him. But in the end nothing concrete happened because there's no chance.

Gotta also remember that Pepe was injured throughout the season, so his numbers would look really good. If he does not come to SW6, Benitez might play him more since he does have a habit of giving younger players a chance to play.

We are always linked with any big name that may be "disgruntled" at any transfer window. Dont see why trying to spend £30+ million on Stones is a better investment than Varane, whos a year older, experienced and has shown he can play on the big stage. Seems like a better investment than someone unproven, IMO.

 
Why don't we just recall one of the on-loan defenders back, Kallas? Seems to be a waste of money if we pay big  for Garay just to fill in the gap for a year or so, when we really want Stone or Varane for the long term.

He's less than a year older than Pedro and plays in a position that ages a hell of a lot better.

At 28/29, a central defender is just about to enter the peak 4/5 years of his career.

varane is a much much better option than stones. but i dont think RM would sell him for anywhere your quoted price. he is their future and it would take a massive amount of money to pry him away.

kalas has shown to have a lot of potential. Its just hard for a player to be playing for chelsea and against suarez one day with promises from jose (i remember kalas saying something about that the one season he was here), and then to be loaned out to KOLN. also, he has been performing quite well with middlesborough. exactly the type of player we should be looking to develop.

If he was available for 25 he would be ours months ago. Hes not, not even close

 
At this stage it'll have to be someone with a buy-out clause that can be activated...which mainly means Italy or Spain...though I've read that Juventus managed to negotiate Witzel's release down to €25m...if they can do that then I don't see why we can either?

Considering our back line has a 31 year old Ivanovic, 29 year old Cahill and 34 year old Terry it's strange.

Chasing Stones made sense because we could build for the future, buying Garay and you risk a lot of your defence declining/retiring at the same time.

The less chopping, changing and overhauls of a defence needed is a good thing in my opinion because they can build a better understanding by playing together frequently and over a greater length of time.

 
I think we will struggle this season withou a new central defender. Maybe Ivan could be moved central but it's going to be a problem.

We have conceded goals in every game have the second worst defensive record after three games and have had two defenders red carded in three games.

Any one who thinks our defence is good this year because it was good last year is probably wrong.

Man city, Liverpool, Manu have zero goals conceded.

 
Dont get the obsession with moving Ivan to the middle. His lack of comcentration poor positioning and marking will be a lot more exposed there as we saw under Rafa. At right back it can be covered up by someone like Willian or even Pedro tracking back. In the centre hes the last line of defense. Not to mention his two best assets, aerial presence on the right and his ability to show up and score when joining the attack. Not a fan at all

 
who is opposed to having chalobah come in as back up cb? he can play there and i would prefer that than spending more millions on a stop gap for half a season to a season.

I'd give him until January to see how he gets on. Apparently he wants a loan abroad this year tho

I would be, he's shown no signs of form for a while now. 

We've sent out better centre backs on loan this year, would be madness to have this lad in the squad over them. 

 
Id' rather we sign no-one than panic buy someone like we've done in the past with Salah, Cuadrado, etc...

 
There has to be younger CB out there than Garay FFS. We were willing to go up to £35M for Stones then why not Laporte?. Everyone seems to rave about him.
