Footballers in your country

Bulgaria tends to produce a fair bit of talent that makes it at top teams. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, there have been a great number of fantastic players that play in Europe's finest leagues. I won't mention the big stars, as you all know them well, since they play in the Prem (Berbatov, Martin Petrov and Stiliyan Petrov), but here are the most promising players to come out of Bulgaria:

Valeri Bojinov - Still the biggest hope of our football, although he has been in the spotlight since he was 16. Caught the eye of many while at Lecce and at 18 he moved from Fiorentina with a transfer fee that was at the time the highest for a Bulgarian footballer (Berbatov later eclipsed that). He plays as a striker, he is very fast, quick thinking and has a thunder of a shot in him. His last two season at Man City have been plagued by injuries and as a result he has barely played 5 games for them. He is also dating a very popular singer and has featured in some of her videos.

Valeri Domovchijski - The best thing to have come out of my other team Levski Sofia's youth, he is a young and versatile striker, very cool in front of goal and with an excellent touch. He made his name with Levski's fantastic run in the UEFA cup in 2005/2006 and Levski's consequent entry in the group stages of the CL, the first Bulgarian team to do that. He currently plays at Hertha, although he spends most of the time on the bench. Known for scoring the last goal on Oliver Kahn.

Nikolay Mihaylov - The son of the legendary goalkeeper ad current president of the Bulgarian football Union Borislav Mihaylov, Nikolay too came through the ranks of Levski (as did his father). He was considered very promising, but at one of his first games as a starter against Werder in Sofia (which was conceivably the only game, from which Levski could get something) he made two shocking mistakes, which eventually cost the team and Levski lost 0-3. He was booed by the fans (and as a member of that crowd I am proud to say I didn't) and substituted at half-time. At this point, his career was widely considered finished and then last summer he made an extremely surprising switch to... Liverpool. They, however, didn't keep him and now he plays on loan at Twente with mixed reports of his performances. After that, public opinion suddenly turned around and he is now hailed as one of the biggest talents of Bulgarian football. He is the captain of our Under-21 national team.

Donavon is coming back from Bayern unfortunately, I wanted him to succeed there but it wasn't to be. And I believe Beasley is on the move.Edu is a good shout, Rookie of the year last year.
Edu has had a tough season at Rangers. To be fair to him he hasn't had many chances in the first team and even when he has been picked it has been against the weaker sides in the league. Money is very tight in Scottish football just now (Rangers have recently announced redundancies for a number of office staff) and they must be wondering why on earth they paid £2.5m for Edu.

Maksimov, do you know anything about Eremenko (can't remember how it's spelled). I remember hearing alot about him and that he would become great, but lately I haven't heard a word about him.

Which one? Alexei Eremenko Jr. or his younger brother Roman Eremenko? Roman is playing in Dynamo Kiev(on loan from Udinese) and Alexei is playing for FC Saturn in the Russian Premier League.

Alexei showed a lot of promise and he had a great World Cup qualifying campaign for the last World Cup as he scored eight goals, several of which were from freekicks, but he's had some personal problems which have affected his performances on the pitch. He's been a bit lazy and arrogant, but he's definitely talented player. Because of a drunk driving incident he was banned from the national team by the Finnish FA for a while. He had a dip in form and hasn't been picked by the Finnish team's manager since last summer, but now he's been picked for the squad for the qualifying match against Wales. Hopefully he will get his act together now.

While Alexei was out of the national team, his younger brother Roman has become a regular in the national team. He seems to have better work ethic and smaller ego.

Bulgaria indeed have some very bright players, but, it seems, always failing to qualify for big events, your last forum was Euro 1996, isn't it?

Spot on! )))

3 pts for you mate B)

Lozzy, are you talking about Edu or Freddy Adu?

edu has played a few games recently. he has been injured for most of the season

i only seen one of the games but he really did impress me. according to the daily record he was up there for man of the match in the other games as well

out of respect for the club walter smith and barry ferguson should be scraping it out to be the 1st to step forward and take voluntary redundancy

the phil scolari (tactically inept) and michael ballack (passenger/liability) of the scottish league B)

No, actually the last big forum was Euro 2004, but we were awful there. We did brilliantly to get there and played the best football I have seen Bulgaria play since the golden age of the 1994 generation of Stoitchkov and co.

For as long as I have followed football, we have always had an abundance of good attacking options, of which you all know at least a few, but our options in the defense have been much poorer (and I bet you you can't name a single Bulgarian defender who's made his name known worldwide). The fact that almost no national coach has been able to make the backline work hasn't helped either. The current manager is the best in Bulgaria at the moment (he is the one who led Levski to the CL and made a formidable (in relative terms, of course) team out of them, so everyone's hopes are high. We have but slim chances of reaching WC 2010 with Italy and Ireland in our group, but he can lay the foundations for something great to come.

It is true that Edu has had a bad run with injuries but I thought that even when he was fit he was not really contention for the first team unless it was in games when Rangers were 'expected' to win reasonably comfortably and he has played a fair few times for the reserves. He is also reported to be experiencing some homesickness problems citing the Scottish weather as depressing. Probably media tittle tattle though.

He was fit again in about mid January and and has only played against the likes of Hamilton and Forfar. I guess the problem he has is that he is fighting for a place against Ferguson (who is a guaranteed started irrespective of anything), David who works constantly and Mendes who can disappera for long spells but is capable of scroring goals or picking out passes that nobody else in the team can.

yea spoty on with mendes. davis should be the only guarenteed starter in the midfield. did you watch the final the other day?

i really feel sorry for davis cause he is the only player in that team to put great performances in every week. wasted in the scottish league but at least there is european football for him (except this year :) )

edu might be even further down when thompson returns from injury. but he is young enough to force his way through. ferguson doesn't have too many seasons left as an untouchable

I actually like British teams, Ireland including. England has always been my other favourite national team ( I guess I've had my big share of disappointments, er :) ). I would love us to qualify - football is the most popular sport in Bulgaria and a qualification for the WC will electrify the country like few things can, but the damage from the games so far is hard to be undone.

I did watch the final sexelk - then I wished I hadn't - is there anyway I can get that time back as it was one of the worst games of football I have seen since...err the last time I saw an SPL game. it really is appalling this season.

Virosh, I`ve never thought it`s so bad for you.

Playing three games and having a game in hand you`re 7 points behind second placed..... Northern Ireland.

Don`t Berbatov, Bojinov and Petrov can`t score at all, do they?

Have you drawned your 3 games against leaders or outsiders?

Though, we`re yet not in Africa either.

If anyone should be there, I`ve heard South Africans are going behind the building schedule.......

One thing is for sure that arrogant guys on the island with Capello should qualify this time.............. :)

Arrogant guys on the Island? Are you having a f**king laugh?

I like British teams too, and British golfers like Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy.

I'll be at the game against Bulgaria on Saturday and I'm looking forward to it. We usually do well against Russian teams.

Come on The Brits!
