With Bosingwa leaving there are rumours we are in for Van der Weil.

 
I noticed Valencia were favourites for him but they have just signed Pereira from Sporting. Not sure if VDW is any good, But there aren't many other quality RB's out there

 
I certainty hope its true, Van Der Wiel is not best defensively but certainly an overall better player than Bosingwa.

VDW could be an alright signing. I would rather we looked at guys like Sime Vrsalijko of Croatia/Dinamo Zagreb or Hiroki Sakai of Japan, or put our trust in Todd Kane. I am firmly in the camp that wants Ivan starting at RB next season, though, so any new player would have to be content at a spot on the bench for now.

 
Do we need him really? We have Ivan there who was the best RB in the prem, statistically and in my opinion. If VDW came then we would have four centre backs, all of whom are quality, none of which (other than Terry) who would get the playing time they deserve.

Our defense is set and, I might add, one of the best in Europe player for player. The reason our defensive record isn't impressive this year is to do with the whole team and how much more we have been attacked this season than we usually have.

Then we have Paulo and Kane as back up too.

Chelsea have been offered the opportunity to finally acquire the Holland international Gregory van der Wiel as part of a summer restructure that is to go ahead regardless of their Uefa Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich.

A**x are ready to sell the right-back for €10 million (Dh47m) and strengthening the right side of the defence is a priority for Chelsea, who have declined to renew the contract of European and FA Cup double-winning defender Jose Bosingwa and would like to move on back-up right-back Paulo Ferreira.

The Premier League club are also aware of interest from Real Madrid in Branislav Ivanovic, who regularly started in the position last season.

Van der Wiel, 24, has been on Chelsea's radar for over two years, but is only now readily available.

Discussing Chelsea's transfer strategy last week, chief executive Ron Gourlay said they wanted "three to four" new players.

"You are always looking to introduce new players," Gourlay said.

"Will you see some new faces? Yes, you will, and you may see a couple of faces go. But at the end of the day, that's just normal end-of-the-season practice."

Only if he is cheap (6-7m max) and ready to be a sub. I have a doubt about both.

 
So he is okay going forward but not great defensively? Wouldn't we be basically replacing Bosingwa with ... Bosingwa?

 
Completely agree with Cody. We already have Ivanovic who is the best in the EPL in my opinion. Plus we have decent back up with Paolo, Hutch and Kane.

 
For £7-8m Id say he's easily worth it. He is lacking defensively but he's only 24 and could easily improve (look at how far David Luiz has come this season). God forbid Ivan gets injured, at least we'd have a decent replacement.

 
Is £7/8m worth it? We have Ivan (whether he wants to play RB), Ferreira, Hutch & Kane. Surely that is good enough so why pay £8m for someone similar to Bossy, Just spend it elsewhere.

 
Bosingwa is on the way out and Paulo is likely to follow.

Kane is an exciting prospect, but he's at least a couple of years and couple of loans away from challenging Brana for the spot.

For the fee mentioned I'd take a chance on Van Der Wiel. Like Marin, he's young enough to learn and if things don't work out, we can at least recoup some of the money.

I know Bossy is going, Ferreira i think should stay, Always done a job when required. There is no guarentee we could re-coup the money, He could be that bad that nobody else wants him.

Especially with the new FFP rules, We cant just take a chance because someone's under £10m anymore, We need to know what we are buying and the worth of the players.

Ferreira is also a huge asset to the younger players. He trains hard, he steps in without complaining and helps with translation. Luiz and Ramires has been very supported by Ferreira.

 
Last season we could have really done with more depth in our squad. Unfortunately £7m isn't considered a lot of money anymore so why not?

 
Paulo has been 3rd choice RB for a few seasons now and is Bossy leaves why should he then become 2nd choice again? He hasn't improved over the last 3 seasons otherwise he'd have played more. I appreciate his service to the club but we could be spending his wages on someone else or giving some of our better prospects better contracts
