I am reaching the age in life where my friends from school / college are either getting married, moving away or just generally dropping off the rader. My social circles have been getting smaller and smaller over the past few years and I'm finding myself with a lot more free time.

So, I need to find some others things to do. My question to you all, Shedenders, is what what keeps you occupied other than working, drinking and watching Chelsea (three areas that I'm currently doing quite well)? Whether it's volunteering, playing sports or a solo activity (eg. Painting), I want to know! I'm hoping to take some inspiration to try some new things I've never thought of before!

Sounds a bit staid - but I've researched my family tree.  I dabbled at first because I was bored and found a free software disc but soon got hooked. I'm quite lucky in that my maiden name is unusual and one branch was quite well-to-do (mostly we're working class but there was a daughter of a servant who seemed to marry out of her social standing!) so managed to get back to 1066 and some minor royalty (my 13th great grand-uncle is the father of Anne Boleyn).   I've found bigamy, insanity, paupers, court cases involving breach of promise and even someone who was described as an astronaut in the mid-nineteenth century!  And got in touch with relatives I'd lost touch with or not known of.  And it's all (well almost all) been done from my laptop.

Beerqueen, that's awesome! Want to know a fact? My uncle researched our family tree years ago and found that we were related to Catherine Parr!

It's also funny that there's a ruined castle near us (Shropshire, and no known connection before I moved here 25 years ago).  My family built it!

Beerqueen!  My mother always told me that her ancestors were falconers to Queen Elizabeth the First - so my ancestors were servants to your ancestors!@ I shall have to kowtow to you from now on.

Mind you, that Anne Boleyn was no better than she should be!

Catherine Parr, on the other hand, was a lady of great virtue!

Yep that sounds about right - we're not on the side of virtue!  And sadly, not closely related to QEI - only fairly distant so I doubt your rellies and mine would have crossed.

When I first was researching I followed a false thread that linked us directly to George, Duke of Clarence who drowned in a vat of malmsey which seemed very apt.  I was gutted when I realised I was wrong!

But QE1 was Anne Boleyn's daughter, so you must be related to her a bit!

George Duke of Clarence was a thorough scoundrel,  I would not want you to be related to him.  He was given the choice of how to be killed (for plotting to kill his own brother Edward lV) and chose to be drowned in a butt of malmsey wine, so the executioners held him head down in it.  I think I'd rather be executed with a French sword like Anne Boleyn!

Anyway, Huttsey was asking about hobbies.  I sing in a couple of local folk clubs, so I am forever practising new songs to sing .  And learning the words, of course!

And over the winter I make patchwork quilts, curtains and table cloths.

In the summer I do a lot of floating around in the sea.

Sorry, Huttsey, I don;t expect these suggestions are much use to you!

I brew beer.

I Golf.

When the weather is nice I'll go out on my mountain bike and hit some trails.  Asthma stops me being too energetic, and the real pisser is it's Hay Fever that causes my asthma, so when it's nice and I want to be outside being active, this isn't the most helpful.

As I've gotten older, I've really got into the joys of creating things, from scratch, for other people to enjoy.  Hence the process of taking some grains, cracking them, mashing them, etc and turning it all into beer.  These days I quite like cooking, and therefore have started (again very weather dependent) planting my own herbs.  Going to do the full raised garden this year and try for some veggies.

Anyway, all of these are time consuming activities, but they allow you to be somewhat introspective.

Oh yes, a bit granted, but we probably wouldn't have been falconing with her!  (but maybe I'm wrong - cousins may've done I guess!)

Singing!  I wish I could sing......

I like to do crossword puzzles (I'm all right at them), write stories, and DX shortwave radio,   among other things  I also learned how to play a bit of guitar. :music-smiley-007:

Meine interessen sind Bücher lesen, Zeitung lesen, Deutsch, im Internet surfen, Musik hören, Fußball, Golf, Tennis, Wandern und Kochhen.

No time for hobbies when you're a law student i'm afraid. I play for the University football team, support Chelsea and that is about all I have time for.

> 5 a side footy twice a week (workmates and friends)

> Weightlifting in the gym 3 times a week

> Poker with the lads once a month

> Good tv series' with my girlfriend

> Traveling when possible

Thats about it!

I've just finished a biography of George Duke of Clarence (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Third-Plantagenet-Clarence-Richard/dp/0752499491), which informed me that drowning was considered the "easiest" way to be executed in those days (beheading could be a misery, seldom was the head struck off in one go). Plus Edward IV was reluctant to shed his brother's blood (although the end result is surprisingly similar). It is assumed that George was told he was to be drowned, and so he chose the butt of wine.

Anyway, I like reading, especially historical non-fiction, planning and researching for city trips and actually going on one   . I'm also very lazy, so doing nothing useful rates very highly too.
