Ian Maatsen

Well, he's just played in a CL final, something none of our players are likely to do for a very long time.

Fair play to him, if it wasn't for our need to raise cash there wouldn't be any doubt that we would keep him I believe.

And gave away the winning goal. When or if Chelsea players make it to a CL final is irrelevant.

Didn't have much in the way of defending to do in the first half. The bulk of RM's attacking was through Vinicius on the left. Struggled the further the game went. Rodrygo got around him much too easily in the box and the pass to Bellingham was, well, less said the better. He's a skilful player, no doubt, but lacks a defender's natural instincts. Positioning, anticipation and decision making under pressure are dodgy, especially when he doesn't have Adeyemi coming back to help him. His strength is going forward, he can be outstanding, but that's only half his job.
This is precisely why he will struggle in the PL unless he’s playing for a team that doesn’t have to defend much which is only City maybe Arsenal. Some of our fans can’t take emotion out and the blue tinted glasses off to see he’s not a good defender at all. He’s a good attacker but defensively look at the goals yesterday.

Even in the first half yesterday that they dominated you could see him get pulled out of position multiple times.

Poor game for young Ian, but hopefully doesn't stop somebody splashing out £35m this summer.

Maatsen didn't have the best game, but he is a decent player.  He just didn't seem to 'fit' at Chelsea. We will hopefully get some decent money for him and also money from selling Lewis Hall to the geordies.  But before we pat ourselves on the back for being so  great at sports business we have to remember what we paid for the injury prone Ben Cillwell and the erratic performances of Cucurealla.

£55 million for Marc and £45 million for Ben. . . with some add ons.

And we are now going back into the transfer market for a left back apparently.

Funny how anyone from the Chelsea academy who is potentially up for sale just to bring in funds because of our overspending is also just not good enough for us.

And some of those fans will still question why an experienced manager like Poch, who saw him train daily, chose to use him in forward areas instead of at LB...

If, in the supremely unlikely event, he starts at LB for us next season...we're one foot in the hole.

I will confess I couldn't be arsed to watch the CL Final. But agreed that makes sense now why he used him up front before the loan. Poch has his positives, especially nurturing kids, but imho I don't think he has it to cross the finishing line. That ruthlessness or aggression that the best tactical managers have.

Even when he got angry, he came across as soft...but the above answered ONE of the many reasons I was shouting "WHY" at the laptop/tablet during matches when poch baffled me.

Yeah, Poch defintely got all the positional stuff bang on.....or look at it another way, the manager who got his team to the CL final chose to pick him at left back.

Maatsen cocked up in the UCL final - he is a rubbish LB

Haaland cocked up 5 one on ones last season - he is a rubbish ST

Messi cocked up against chelsea in the UCL semi final in 2012 - he is the worst player of all time

John Terry cocked up in the UCL final many years ago - he was a rubbish CB

The hapless Djimi Traore once helped Liverpool win the UCL..... obviously the best Trarore to have ever lived.

One swallow doesnt make a summer....

Are we just going to ignore the other 22 games he played for Dortmund at LB, of which he featured to get his team to a CL final in the first place.

Its almost like certain people on this forum have been waiting for him to mess up to say 'told you he's not a LB'. If it takes a team of Real Madrid's calibre to do that then he's going to have a pretty good career ahead of him in spite of master tactician Poch.

Okay sure, lets not ignore them. He was solid. A decent player for Dortmund in the Bundesliga, a league that in recent years has conned us into transfers of players who were tearing the place up, only to come and be nowhere near the physical and technical ability required for the prem. Pulisic, Werner and Havertz all looked great over there and simply didn't here.

We've got a fairly modest release clause of £35m in Maatsens contract, which for a 22 year old who has just taken his team to a CL final and set the Bundesliga on fire, is surely one of the best deals on the market? Oh thats right, no one wants to pay it.

I think Maatsen is a decent player and I also think it is a shame he didn't get more a chance to prove himself here. But just as you have said people were waiting to jump on him and highlight his failure, many are also too keen to jump on the club and decisions that they have made. He won't get a top English side interested in him and will end up in Serie A or the Bundesliga where he will continue to have a solid career but that doesn't mean we've made a mistake.

Isn't he about to end up at Bayern according to reports?

Reports from who? Havent seen anything credible suggesting its happening. Although I also don't see how this wouldn't support the comment I made that he wont get a top prem move and that he'll end up in Serie A or Bundesliga
