Jack Butland

Shocking

He’s a good keeper but this a massive step up for him. Nick Pope would be my choice if the GK has to UK based

However, I believe we have to look beyond the EPL for a replacement. By now it’s too late though with 2 days to go.

Good news about the retention of Willian.

This is what happens with Marina in charge. She failed to seal the Allison deal, the only realistic high quality keeper available, and now she's scrabbling about with three days to go for Butland.

Really, how she's still in a job is beyond me.

Mundo deportivo saying we're going to trigger Oblak's release clause.

I'll have some of what they're smoking, seems great stuff.
Don't see why we can't send Courtois back there to Atletico - it's in Madrid where is family are right? That way we can just do a swap deal with Oblak, would suit both parties and I don't see either team being left in a negative position from that swap. Also sticks two fingers up to Real Madrid.

How would it suit Oblak, to move from a side regularly challenging for top trophies to one where we havne't even qualified for the CL 3 times out of the last 6 years.

Oblak isn't going to be valued the same as Courtois.

We said that about Emanalo and it appears he wasn't the issue. Maybe it's the man at the very top...

Goalkeepers are hard to pick I reckon very hard to see whether making saves at a smaller club translates to a bigger one. You have less saves but you're expected to make harder ones too. Other factors like dominating your box and distribution are more important.

I've honestly got no idea whether he would make the grade here or not.

I'm in the Kepa the keeper camp, but that's probably way too expensive. Butland wouldn't really suit Sarri's style and I'm already envisioning the fan meltdown he'll face when he inevitably makes his first major mistake.

Butland would give us the option to add another non-homegrown player to the squad potentially. That could be a factor

Butland is sh*te at distributing...hell he's sh*te at most things...his HG status doesn't really save him from the fact he isn't that good...did you see his first performance this season for Stoke?

No thanks, absolute donkey of a keeper.

I'd go for Schmiechel or Donnuruma
Personally I think Donnuruma is all hype. You call Butland a donkey and name a keeper that had a poor season last year. Most people haven’t watched him yet on a forum and he’s a world beater. He’s on massively high wages and is one of the best payed goalkeepers in the world. People talk about a risk with Butland well he’s twice the risked he is.

Butland is a good solid goalkeeper and would be a clever signing by Chelsea. Before the World Cup it was a toss of a coin between him and Pickford and how much would Pickford be now 60M+

He does have upside, but this still smacks of a desperate last-ditch signing from a club that has failed to scout properly in anticipation of Courtois' possible departure.

For example, Sarri likes his goalkeepers to distribute efficiently, but that is IMO the weakest aspect of Butland's game. The guy is a classic shot-stopper - and I'm not sure he'd be comfortable with a higher defensive line either because he's not that quick.

Names such as Oblak, Pope, Kepa and Donnaruma have been bandied about in this thread. Of these three Oblak is definitely the best goalkeeper, but Kepa is the better distributor and has the potential to be as good as Oblak IMO. Donnaruma is a phenomenal shot-stopper and he is faster than Butland, but like Butland his distribution is nothing to write home about and his attitude is apparently indifferent. Pope has done well for Burnley in front of a relatively deep defensive line because he is excellent at positioning himself and anticipating where shots will be placed. IMO he is not a particularly good distributor, nor is he particularly quick.

Should Kepa/Oblak be unattainable, for the high-line, possession-oriented style Sarri wants us to play the likes of Yann Sommer and (at a push) Mat Ryan would be reasonable purchases. Both are reasonably quick, excellent distributors and pretty good shot-stoppers. Sommer is the better keeper of the two and is more likely to be available owing to Germany's longer transfer window, but Ryan has a higher upside and has a good throw.

Agree with your points, just missing Strakhosa from Lazio who at 23 will be an ideal long term solution. Brilliant distributor of the ball, ideal for Sarri’s style and would cost max £35m even this late in our window.
