Josh Acheampong

He signed a new deal recently didn’t he?
Only till 2028 apparently and his wage will be tiny compared to the figures his agent knows he can get for him elsewhere.
There is no guarantee he agrees to sign an extension although Alonso clearly rates him so hopefully the club reflect that in his contract offer.

Right centre-back in a three is the role that suits what he has shown. Composed on the ball, carries it into midfield, and does not look out of place when the line is high. The Milan game against Leão is the one people keep coming back to because it was not a friendly. If Fofana is fit, the rotation is the question, not whether Acheampong belongs. James can cover the same side on different nights. He does not need to be the only option.

The new deal is the sensible part. A young centre-back who is already the reliable one does not need a queue of clubs to know his value. Regular games this season will tell more than another summer of talk. Aerial work and the odd lapse are the development items. They are not the reason to sit him.

It would have been easy for Alonso to go with the much more expensive Fofana. Credit to him he has gone with Josh, stuck with Josh and is getting rewarded for it. Clean sheet will have done him, Colwill and Lacroix the world of good at different levels.

I hope we can see something similar with Estevao at some point in the season.

He’s the perfect modern footballer, didn’t put a foot wrong today and we’re all being rewarded with his continued inclusion in the side.

Love him. Has everything to go right to the top and is getting the experience his play deserves now. Was also nice to see him going up against George given their timing and path to the first team together several years back.
He just calms me down at the back more than any other defender we have. Has a great touch and seems to read the game well.

Josh getting regular starts is huge credit to Alonso and this is what we all wanted to see under the previous two f**k-wits.

He's such a good player with a great attitude. That bit in the first half when he was fouled and the Everon player went right through him yet he got straight back up to look to win the ball again. Just imagine if that had been Gusto!!!

the usual social media mouths are all starting to say he's the next one the club are looking to tie down
It was also his first professional contract so only the first 3 years are binding, anything beyond 2028 is an option to extend only. He would be able to negotiate a free transfer from Jan 2028.

Hard to know what to believe but you have to think the club will want to reward his growth with a new long term deal and strong terms. If you believe what you hear I think he is first looking for assurances of first team football. Could argue he is the best defender at the club now - his ceiling is so high.
